Summary
The exhaustion of the past 24 hours hits Samira all at once, as though Jack's concern and his touch opened the floodgates. The weight of the little girl's sadness and her own similar sadness from all those years ago, the sharp feeling of guilt that accompanied cases like this, and the strain of keeping all of this taped down while performing ease and politeness for the drunken man who had been talking at her for the past hour fall on her suddenly, crushing her and grinding her to dust. She stumbles slightly and Jack catches her, supporting her with an arm around her waist. She fights back a sob at the sudden contact—when was the last time she had been touched like this?—and tries to regain her bearings, dodging the look of concern he shoots her.
