    Summary

There’s a potion in his bag that would make the healing permanent, that would put an end to the cycle they keep spinning through, but Jay’s not going to use it; it’s not what tonight is for. Midnight, perhaps, when the clock strikes twelve and today tips into tomorrow; but tonight is for him to gorge on beginnings, beginning.

“He’s…um,” Jang Heoun begins, shy and fidgety. “Nice.”

The pill Yeongeun was cutting in half turns to dust under the splitter. “Pardon?”

Jang Heoun flushes. “Baek Saheon-ssi… he’s nice.”

    Summary

Jaekwan's hands never trembled when he was handed the knife. The metaphorical knife, that was — he was a better shot than he was with a blade, which Choi used, which was fine; they made up for each other's weaknesses, this way, and it wasn't that Jaekwan was bad with the more traditional weapons, he wasn't, but he had a preference. Guns were good with Jaekwan. They suited each other. Clean, efficient, easy to transport, and there was so little that came through with it — not that Jaekwan was unfeeling — but that Choi, arguably, felt too much, through his hands, the gristle, the feedback of the blade; whenever Choi cleaved through something with his jakdu he could feel the tension of the blade meeting something with force, the resistance and the refusal to split, and then the inevitability of separation that signalled his success.

    Choi goes on vacation.

    Summary

Jaekwan had roused from his sleep to see Choi sitting at his bedside, having pulled up a chair that he must have procured somewhere, still in his bureau-blue jacket with his hair unflatteringly unstyled and windswept: Jaekwan must have looked at it for too long, because Choi's fingers went up to it and tugged through it a few times, smoothing out the worst of the stray hairs. There was blood on his collar. Not mine, he'd said, catching Jaekwan looking at that, too, as if he'd known Jaekwan would ask; Jaekwan had just been about to.

In which Agent Bronze expertly navigates his relationship with his long-term boyfriend, his coworker, his past, and his family, not necessarily in that order.

    Summary

"I feel responsible for him," says Jaekwan at last. Squinting at Choi slightly, frowning: always frowning. He's going to get wrinkles like that. "Agent Grapes."

"Of course you do," says Choi. Jaekwan feels responsible for everybody; he'd come into the Bureau all alone in the world, and somehow that had convinced him that the world was something that he had to take under his wing at the ripe old age of too young, like he was Ultraman. Jaekwan feels responsible for those smaller than him, those weaker than him, those kinder than him, those less capable than him. South Korea could create another sovereign nation with the number of people that Jaekwan feels responsible for. They could populate Mars with the number of people that Jaekwan feels responsible for. They could create another Milky Way with the number of people that Jaekwan feels responsible for. "What else is new?"

In which Agent Choi expertly navigates his relationships with his new coworker, his job, his perennial traumas, Agent Bronze, and the gruesome reality of the paranormal, not necessarily in that order.
