Summary
The sight makes Max laugh again, even harder, until he’s breathless. His hands are still against Charles, but they’re both leaning in now, foreheads bumping together in a way that would probably be painful if Max could feel anything right now.
“This is insane,” he breathes.
“What is?”
Max isn’t sure. This conversation. This entire night. The last few weeks that they’ve spent accidentally ending up in all the same places.
“I thought you were gonna hit me,” he says, instead of answering. “That last time? In the coffee shop, y’know.”
“Were you hoping that I would?"
Max doesn’t know how to explain that he’s been waiting to feel the impact for twenty years.

Summary
“Don't die, please.” Staring him down like a viper, Charles lays his sword across the blonde's lap before disappearing into the trees. Nothing is left of the boy other than his sword, his sash, the blood that coats Max’s knuckles and a boundless trail of unanswered questions.
The Bulls find him three hours later once the battlefield is deserted and the land dipped in moonlight. Eyes catch on the glinting silver of his sword and the carvings of its heritage.
They deem him a hero for killing a general.
They dub him the inevitable.
He dubs himself a fraud.
He deems Charles a traitor for the life he saved and for the one he took.

Summary
“What’s wrong with you?” Max snarls but doesn’t move. It makes Charles even more angry. He wants to see Max snaps, needs him to revert to the angry kid that ranted about him on camera, just so they could see eye to eye.
They have unresolved business. They will always have.
But Max is composed and Charles is fraying at the edges. Somehow, Max is always a step ahead.
or:
Charles finds it hard to be himself when all he do is hide, Max is confusing while horribly honest, and love is stored between a quarter of orange and a whisky cabinet. Somehow, it all comes together.
