Summary
He tries not to think too hard about where he is, or why. Because when he thinks about why, he thinks about blood. And then he starts thinking about how many others are just like him and saw what he saw, and did what he did, and how much crime there is in the world and there’s so much pain and so many bad people and horrible accidents- it’s easy to get stuck in a loop, and he finds himself staring at nothing, seeing nothing, feeling nothing and that emptiness is terrifying and he’d rather not feel that way, if he can help it.
(Or the one where Peter is a patient in a mental health ward)

Peter Parker, the 29 year old, slightly broke and a bit socially inept guy from Queens, would consider Wade Wilson his closest friend. Maybe even his “bestie” as Wade calls it.

And stuck with drugs and drug needles and be tied to tables and beat to a pulp periodically and like he didn’t exactly choose to be Spider-Man so that sort of crumbles that argument into cookie crumbles and that’s the way the cookie crumbles and May says that a lot. And Ned says it because she says it. And maybe Ben said it before and that’s another one of those things that still hangs around because of him. Another one of those things he left behind.

Tony sits in relative darkness, the TV on mute, Friday running searches like she has been every day for the past month. A month, since Quentin Beck’s grand plan crumpled underneath him on that bridge. A month, since a flash of light was able to distract Peter just as he was about to bring Beck down. A month, since Beck snatched him, since both of them disappeared. An entire. Month.
I’ll keep you updated. I promise.
I love you, kid. Rhodey’s on his way, alright? He’s coming. He’s gonna go as fast as he can.
I love you too. I’ll be okay. I promise. I can do this.
The last thing Tony heard Peter say.
Rhodey, Happy and Fury traversed the London landscape immediately afterwards. They found the glasses, but not Spider-Man. There was footage enough to incriminate Beck for what he was, but somehow, nobody was able to get a shot of when he grabbed Peter. Peter was knocking him around, looked like he was getting the upper hand, and then that flash of light.
Gone. Gone.

He’s been trying to stay focused. He’s been trying to stay focused by keeping himself distracted. He’s been getting information from Rhodey about the stray new hero here and there, and there’s one Rhodey brought to him the other day that Tony has to follow up on, that 240p YouTube video the two of them watched together. What the hell was the name? He stood out, and if Tony was more clear-headed, he’d remember.
He’s searching for the information on a Thursday evening, and that’s when he gets the e-mail about the bed and breakfast. A bed and breakfast that sits on a plot of land that Obie was fighting to take from the owners thirty or so years back, and now, thirty or so years later, the new owners are contacting Tony to sell. Want to move on, the place is past its prime anyway.
And maybe ‘slightly haunted’.
“Slightly haunted,” Tony says, the next day, sitting across the table from Happy at the cafe in the tower. He takes a bite of his scone and tries to hide his keen interest.

“Peter, you’ve been acting insane for the past however many days and it’s giving me an ulcer, what’s going on, what did I do? Tell me. Tell me and I’ll fix it.”
Peter is still stalking around, and Friday is listing off his injuries, from a concussion to broken ribs to a sprained ankle, and Tony feels sick looking at it all.
“You’ll fix it,” Peter says, glancing over at him with pure disdain, the look bookended by matching explosions somewhere behind them. “Yeah it’s something you can’t fix, if it happens, nope, can’t fix it, it would just—but you’re just saying—”
Tony starts forward towards him. “Pete, explain to me what’s happening, please.”
“The protocol, the protocol,” Peter insists, waving his hands through the air.
Tony shakes his head. “The protocol?”
“The Avalon Protocol, Tony,” Peter spits out, with venom.
