“Why would you give up your life for me like that? It doesn’t make sense,” he continues, laughing harshly. “You could’ve had a life, Pope. You could’ve gone to college. Fuck, man. I don’t get it.”
Pope could almost laugh, if he had the energy to find anything funny right now.
Because I don’t want a life without you, he doesn’t say. How could I breathe if you weren’t there? How could I ever sleep again if those cops had killed you? How could you think I even had a choice?
Instead, Pope sighs, keeping his eyes resolutely pointed forward. “What would you have done, JJ?” He asks, as if he doesn’t already know the answer.

JJ’s not sure how many times it’s happened. He’s confident the number is high, but there’s no way to be certain— it’s not like he keeps a running tally of all the times he’s died.
That would be a little morbid, all things considered.
All he knows is that no matter what happens to him, no matter how certain he is that his life should be over, he always wakes back up.
It would be concerning if it wasn’t so convenient.

Summary
“Don’t you ever do something like that again. Not for me.” Pope says seriously, his pained eyes never once leaving JJ’s face. Shaking his head lightly against the hands holding his cheeks, JJ sighs, the act painful against his bruised ribs.
“I can’t promise that.” He murmurs, and though his voice is low, he knows Pope hears him, because his face turns desperate. “Why not?” The boy responds, voice pleading.
And something in JJ shatters.
“Come on, Pope. You know why.” He whispers, squeezing his eyes shut.

After JJ takes the fall for Pope, the two of them reunite at midsummers and things come to a head. This goes along with the other work in this series, but it’ll probably make sense as a standalone.

Watching Pope emerge from the water, fresh from sinking Topper’s boat, head thrown back in laughter, all JJ could think was I love you, I love you, I love you. A day later, they’re standing in Heyward’s store, and the cops are walking in, and Pope’s freaking out, but JJ can’t bring himself to feel anything. He’s not worried about Pope at all, because he knows, in that moment, that he would do anything for the boy in front of him. Including taking the fall for his crime.

this is the third and final installment of a series, so it will make very little sense if you haven't read at least the first part!! the second isn't required for understanding, but i encourage you to read it just to kinda be on the same page w/ everything that's going on.

Or, after Luke takes things too far, JJ ends up in a group home on the mainland. He spends the summer fighting to survive, thinking his friends hate him and want him gone, not knowing that they’re spending the summer trying desperately to reach him. What will it take for him to get home? Unlikely friendships, eventual JJPope, and I promise it will have a happy ending!!

Instead, it was John B, panic in his voice, telling him JJ had left for the marina hours ago and not returned.
And if that wasn't enough to wake Pope completely, he didn't know what would be.
