The Ural Mountains belong to the wolves first. Give them space and they keep it in exchange. But Evgeni is stuck. Frozen. Pale eyes pin him in place, and he can feel his heart within his chest. He knows to back away; slowly turn, and retreat. He knows what to do but he’s not doing it.
The wolf is small, with pale and wiry fur. It just looks at Evgeni, and for a brief moment it feels like something brushes the back of his mind. Evgeni swallows as he feels it again; neurons in unused pathways in his mind; a phantom spark; pack sense.

Figures, George laughs to himself, and then all the weird looks and the stammering start to make sense, the way Max looks at Daniel like he hung the moon and stars in the sky just yesterday and at George like he is probably the antichrist; he figures that if Max is for the rest of his life going to continue to be kinda weird about wanting to fuck his best friend, George might as well just do it for him, and hope it's enough.
