Was it possible to loathe someone more than you loved them? It's something that has plagued Todd's mind ever since he received the invitation. He should be proud, he loved him, still, after everything. But you can't love the hurt away, he's tried. The more you push, the more they back up and Todd has backed Neil into a corner, like a skittish animal, desperate to do anything for even a chance of escape.
