Instead, they just sit in the cab in silence, Anthony’s hand possessively on her thigh. Kate knows he must have spent that hour where she didn’t answer fuming, but she’s not going to apologise.
He takes a deep breath. ‘I missed you.’
Something in her relaxes. She covers the hand on her thigh with her own.

“You gave him your heart and the very next day he gave it away?” Kate finished. Her sarcasm was entirely inappropriate for how sad Ben looked, but she couldn’t help herself.
He shrugged in defeat. “Kind of. We got back to London and I never heard from him again.”
Kate was slowly starting to put the pieces together. “So you want me to be there for emotional support? Because your brothers aren’t being sympathetic?”
Benedict suddenly looked more awkward than she’d ever seen him before, the loose-limbed confidence he normally displayed deflating. “Well yes, that too, but also…,” he trailed off, as Kate stared at him in confusion.

“What was it like to lay with her?” Kate inquires, and it is indecent, it is inappropriate, and Anthony has yet to find his bearing on this strange evening.
“Kate, I could not-” he starts to object, but he is stopped by her hand cradling his jaw and her voice takes on an urgent manner as she says, “Please. I should like to know.”
And Anthony Bridgerton is rather famously besotted with his wife after all. So besotted he instantly ceases his protests, meets her gaze as she looks at him, a familiar expression on her face, and he may not understand but he is yet to deny her a wish.
“What is it that interests you?” he asks, his heartbeat now fast.
Kate takes a shuddering breath and commences her questioning.

Anthony freezes in his tracks. In front of him is a rather beautiful woman. She must be a new neighbour because he’s certain he would have noticed her if they’d ever crossed paths before in his five years of living in the building. She looks a bit embarrassed and suddenly Anthony realises that he’s half-naked.
He grimaces. “I’m sorry, I was expecting someone else,” he says, gesturing at his state of undress awkwardly.
“Of course,” she says. “Don’t let me keep you. Package for Kathani Sharma?”
(Anthony and Kate live in the same building. Kate gets a lot of parcels. Anthony accepts them for her. A silly little Christmas oneshot.)
