Summary
"I'm a difficult person to love, Clark," Bruce says quietly, turning away from him to stare at some indistinct point across the cave. He's building a wall with that single sentence. Clark can feel it rise between them, made of stone and old grief. "I don't recommend it." He makes a small, humorless sound, as if that entire statement were some kind of punchline he's only just now understanding.
"Who asked for a recommendation?" Clark's reply comes out sharper than he intended, raw and a little too honest. "I'm a big boy, Bruce. I can make my own decisions."
(Or, as it turns out, Clark's feelings aren't as unrequited as he previously believed.)

Clark wasn’t completely oblivious about him having a type. He was self aware enough to recognize when he was slipping into a habit. He knew he was done for the moment he heard Bruce laugh.
Of course, at that point he’d been the Batman still.

Batman's heartbeat keeps speeding up whenever Clark is around. For instance: when Clark greets him, half-naked, on a Gotham rooftop. Or when he uses his superstrength to save a busload of schoolchildren. Or sometimes even just when he smiles.
Clearly the poor man is terrified of him.
