Summary
Rashid is finishing up the dishes from dinner when he hears the soft cry from his bedroom. It's just about dusk — around the time he starts thinking he should think about getting ready for bed, even though he knows he's not going to for hours yet; dinner was really more like lunch. It's also around the time Armand wakes up.
There's the noise from his room again, a pained-sounding little whimper. That's not a vampire vocalization; that's a human noise. A mimic of one. A lure. Armand woke up ready to play.

He's deep down a JSTOR hole of real-work-avoidance when something … somethings. There's a flicker at the edge of his consciousness. A little spark, like when he's hit upon a connection, something to take him from Point A all the way to Point M. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, do figure out how to get in touch with a politician who'd probably rather do something extralegal than agree to speak with him. Like that, except there's nothing at the other end of the line. There's a tug on his little mental rope, and then it goes slack.
Then there's a knock on the door.

“I talked about her a lot, didn’t I?” Louis acknowledges. It had been a languid and surprisingly painless conversation about a sore topic: how Louis had spent his life trying with all his might to be his father, and to a degree had succeeded, but deep down, had always seemed more in possession of the essence of his mother, even as a little boy… tidying Paul and Grace up when they got scruffy, getting sentimental over the house’s flower patch, smoking more than he drank, sighing more than he spoke. He’s at peace with it now, how much of Florence he sees in himself. The thought doesn’t itch anymore.

“It’s not because you're hot,” Daniel says. “I mean, yes, but not - shut up, stop fishing.”

Daniel kisses him, nibbles at his lip. Smiles and kisses him again, slow and soothing, the same mouth that does large predator maneuvers on all the sexy parts of Louis’ body. He kisses Louis’ cheek, his jaw, his lips again. Stays close when he's done.
“What you were saying, before,” Daniel says, Louis’ eyes full of his lovely face, his waist in the periphery with Armand's hands petting along his ribcage. “It's so stupid, it’s - I think about it. If both of you made me together. But that's not actually a thing, is it? Two makers.”

Stunned into silence, all he can do is blink. If he’d thought his original request was a hard sell, the alternative would have been completely impossible. He’s surprised she’s even smiling at him, because he wants it. Fuck, he wants it; she’s struck a match to reignite his worst cravings.
But he pretends his chest isn’t tight, that his skin doesn’t itch while thinking of the needs he’d boxed up over a year ago. He makes her persuade him, playing the fool, going “Are you sure?” and “You think it'll be fun?” and “Well, go easy on me”, despite how tempted he is to offer himself up immediately. If she sees right through him, like she always does, he’ll at least get a few points for trying.
Daniel, Alice, and the price of getting what you didn't know you needed.
