At the onset of another early bitter winter, with most of the fall hunt's caribou meat already gone and no seals being caught at the breathing holes, Silna and her father strike out alone from the season's encampment to secure the survival of all those left behind.
He hadn't wanted her to come with him. They never discussed it either way. She'd patched the little hole in her boot and sewn herself a decent outdoor overcoat the night that it was decided he was to leave, and she helped him pack the sled and harness the dogs, and then she simply made certain to be inseparable when he started off.
Silna meets Tuunbaq as a child when her father makes his sacrifice.
