Summary
Will Byers is content with his quiet life...mostly. He has a teaching position at Quantico, a comfortable home, and his best friend Mike, whose presence has always felt like enough. He’s done with the work that once cost him his sanity. He’s done with the blood, the patterns, the way violence used to settle too easily into his bones.
Then Jim Hopper, head of the Behavioral Science Unit, shows up with a case he can’t solve alone. Girls are disappearing without a trace, and Jim needs Wills help. Will knows what saying yes would mean. The sleepless nights. The unraveling. And Jim would never stop at one case — he would keep coming back, asking more of Will than he could afford to give.
But Mike is moving forward. Building a life that doesn’t quite leave room for Will anymore.
So Will takes the job.
And in doing so, he steps back into a world where love, obsession, and violence blur together and where the most dangerous thing he might uncover isn’t the killer, but the truth about himself and those closest to him.

Summary

Then he meets Will, a fellow patient, and slowly, they begin to navigate trust, friendship, and perhaps something even more.

“Will Byers?”
Will glances around, as if there is another Will Byers in their vicinity. He manages a small smile. “Yeah, it’s- uh. It’s me.”
Mike rushes forward, and all he can think is holy shit, Will is alive, as he’s throwing his arms around the other boy and tugging him in for a crushing hug. It isn’t until Will is secure, nestled–maybe a bit stiffly–in his arms, that Mike starts crying.
“I thought you were dead,” Mike murmurs, muffled by Will’s jacket. He sniffles. “I thought- we- they told us you were dead.”
Or, Will was never found in S1, but survives in the Upside Down until 1987 due to his powers and connection with Vecna. Cue Mike, an ill-timed trip to the Upside Down, and a lot of feelings.

Summary
A sharp crack tears through the air. Mike flinches back, staring down at Will's lifeless body. He gets one last look before the ground is giving way beneath them, and all at once, they’re falling.
A shrill cry tears from Mike’s throat as he finds himself flailing through the open sky. A sharp crack of lightning shutters in the distance. Will's limp corpse contorts, dropping faster than he can. He’s screaming, unimaginable terror ripping through his body. He writhes, reaching for Will, crying the boy's name.
He’s falling, plummeting through a destabilized upside down and there's nothing he can do to stop it. He’s going to die.
Mike reaches out, eyes squeezed close. He tears the watch from Will's wrist, seconds before colliding with the Exotic Matter.

OR
Colliding with Exotic matter as the Upside Down collapses in on itself sends Mike hurtling through time. He’s given the chance to save Will before any of this starts.
But he can’t seem to get it right. Reliving moments throughout the years, helpless to warn Will. He just wants to keep him safe. Why can’t he keep him safe?
He’ll do this again and again until he gets it right. He won’t lose him again.

Mike’s schedule had been booked solid for the whole day. He was often slammed with appointments in late February. Nothing like an arbitrary romantic holiday to make people finally draw the line on their bullshit relationships. Mike enjoyed this time of year. Not because he liked that people were unhappy enough to break and come to him, but because he could help them.
