    Summary

It’s starting to feel like this is not just about him feeling sorry for what happened earlier. Daniel says as much aloud, unable to help it even if it might mean shooting himself in the foot. Even if he might risk putting an end to this by giving it name.

“Hmm,” Rashid hums in feigned contemplation as he settles one knee on the bed beside Daniel’s hip. The index finger of his left hand dips underneath the sleeve of the older man’s cardigan. Runs along his pulse point, his veins. “What do you think it’s about, then?”

“No fucking clue,” he replies, his stare dragging up the line of Rashid’s throat, over the curve of his jaw, past his mouth and up to his eyes. The boy isn’t meeting his gaze, his lashes fluttering in the direction of Daniel’s wrist. His lips are parted slightly. He looks—he looks.

He looks horny. Wrecked. Devastatingly pretty.

Rashid huffs an airy laugh. “Liar.”

    Summary

Louis taps his arm. He looks lovely tonight, and his eyes are brilliant under the bar’s light. He’s as beautiful as he is in the memory that exists in Daniel’s head, of the first time they met at Mary’s. The glimmer in his eyes, the smoke curling in tendrils around his lips, the way he smiled as he said, I did a terrible thing, once. He smiles, and it’s lined with sweetness. “You bored?”

“An unreasonable amount,” Armand says. He’s not, and he knows he’s not. Louis knows, too. He could spend every day for the rest of his never-ending life chasing the shape of Daniel’s shadow and it wouldn’t bore him. He drinks whatever is left in his glass and it tastes like chalk in his mouth. Sometimes, he thinks he’ll always be trying to chase down the taste of Daniel’s blood in his throat, with Louis and alcohol and prey, and it will still find a way to linger on his tongue for as long as he lives. “Weddings are long, dull affairs. I don’t see the appeal.”

    (It’s 1982. Daniel’s wedding is a pleasant, lively affair.)

Obviously, truth is stranger than fiction, and there’s always going to be edge cases in the real world, but for our purposes: just how realistic is Armand’s tragic backstory?

Judging by the number of retweets/reblogs on this post and others like it, fannish opinion seems to be “not very”. But honestly? It’s not that far-fetched.

Or: a fannish academic does a deep dive into the most controversial character in Daniel Molloy’s new novel.
