Summary
Five years later, I finally got around to posting these fics to AO3.
The origin of the first chapter was a request by the wonderful @wtfmulder for first date fic. The second chapter arose when certain readers insisted I couldn't just fade to black on a potential sex scene.
The title of both chapters come from the Gettysburg Address, which I have included in the end notes. -

Another long drive, another Outlander fanfic idea that dropped into my brain out of nowhere, shoving aside the historical AU I have been wrestling with for months. Here’s the pitch: Claire Beauchamp is a psychiatrist specializing in grief counselling. Jamie Fraser is referred to her by his sister, who is worried for his well-being after a series of family tragedies. You can probably guess the rest, but I’m going to write it anyway. The title is taken from a song by the amazing Phantogram that was playing as the story idea came to me.
After losing my WIP virginity posting Ginger Snap, I’m going out on that limb again and posting this first chapter with only a rough outline of the whole story mapped out in my head. You people are a terrible influence! Also, there will be some trigger warnings on future chapters, so please watch out for those.

The title song is by TV on the Radio and doesn’t have much to do with the subject matter, except for one line which has always made me... *pulls at imaginary collar*
I’m placing this new installment between Ceremonies and Lazy Dancer, so sometime during the first month or so of their physical relationship.

Often we see Jamie being the jealous one, but this idea came to me fully formed. Set way back at the beginning of the Metric timeline, sometime between Breathing Underwater and Lost Kitten. Claire POV, and also just a hint of Jamie/John. I’ve been very busy with work, life, etc. and haven’t found much time or energy to write. Add to that the fact that I left Metric Jamie and Claire in a very happy place, wrapped up in each other under the eaves at Lallybroch. But I found myself wondering how their return to normalcy might unfold, and this little glimpse is what I came up with.

I don’t do Twitter, but roughly once a year I wish I did. A few weeks back, some clever Outlander writers there came up with the idea of the Eye Sex Chronicles, in which various pre-relationship scenes between Jamie and Claire are re-imagined in a less PG way. I asked Catrin Writes if I could join the party, and she kindly agreed. And because I like nothing more than a challenge, the scene I chose is when Jamie comes for Claire after the Redcoat ambush in 1x01.

In commenting on the last installment in the Metric universe, I said that Jamie’s date with Claire was complete dating wish fulfillment on my part. Which got me thinking about their next date and what other personal preferences I could cram into this story. And yet it’s definitely Claire’s turn to take Jamie for a spin, which meant that... well, you’ll see!
