this fic deserves a more personal reminder--must remember to do at next re-read
short, sadly impersonal version: my diet needs a great many words, one piece is my beloved and there are simply not enough OC stories that don't focus on romance
I am following Elynna's marine career with great amusement. got that strawhat style fuckin' with the establishment, in a very person-centric way.
There is a maturity here I respect--leaning a bit more on seinen feel than shonen.
Vibes...it IS still One Piece, but there's a deep melancholy interwoven, rather than so sun-drenched as OP fics sometimes are. -

Summary
In 1933 Alastor manages to summon a demon with a rectangular, glowing head who keeps staring at him like he can't decide between tearing him apart and worshipping him at his feet.
Meanwhile, Vox just blew up himself and the entire universe and suddenly stands before a second chance. He simply has no idea what that second chance entails.
In other words: The demon Vox and human Alastor time travel roadtrip fic that spiralled and suddenly gained a plot

love fics with research, esp where the author posts sources so i can learn too!
Author's art is /also/ lovely
I do so appreciate awful people being allowed to be awful...esp with acknowledgement that that doesn't make them /flat/ either. Contrasts, that highlight their specific moral geography. The friction between them is so apparent and justified!
Alastor laughing at Vox apologizing for the /least/of the list transgressions against him, Vox's acknowledgement "it was what I was actually sorry for".
I found myself constantly nodding along to Alastor's thought process. His exhaustive loophole search, his bending for his goals, his constancy in his own behaviors, the direction of his assumptions for the mysteries Vox presents. Vox, too, had an emotional legibility that was engaging--the obsession with Alastor undeniable, but he'd still make choices that demonstrate he is indeed the successful and intelligent demon we're told he is. The obsession is not /all/ he is--just the highest priority. And while he blinds himself to some aspects of his own psyche, relationships, and choices, the story is willing to acknowledge the alternatives he is passing by, what he's trading away with his choices.

Time-travel fix-its are fun, because not only do we get to salve wounds that went unhealed in canon, but pick up exciting new trauma! haha.
best of both worlds (as any fic with two worlds should aspire to be)-fairly decent Watsonian explanation for the time-travel, attempting to work within the expectations of established rules of reality. Technically our ROB is a fic-original entity, but it seems to operate in lock-step with similar entities (HC s4 deities, the partner god/desses). Very little suspension of disbelief required.
-our MC still acts like themself, even with the future knowledge. There's a fair balance so far between acknowledging the trauma carried over from the other timeline, and behavior more in line for what friends, allies, observers and enemies would expect from a Phil native to this point in time. His changes feel like they *could* be choices he'd have made even without the knowledge. That's *chefs kiss*.
-am quietly sobbing (/pos, mostly) over the approach for banned members. There's a lot of varied solutions in the fandom, over how to handle content going forward. And I think this has a lot of respect-- for the severity of the issues with the content creators, for the real emotional impact the characters and stories had for those of us who experienced them, unknowing of histories and behind-the-scenes, and for the unavoidable hole left behind in other character's journeys. This is beautifully married in, given Phil's 4th wall breaking habits, to warn how the author is going to handle the conspicuous holes, without jump scaring readers who are still hurting with direct reference, or overly drawing attention to abandoned/altered plotlines (and their sources). Phil's reaction and wounds to the universe's erasure honestly ties quite neatly to the emotional state of both the storyline-that-would-have-been, where past Phil would have been dealing with certain emotional complexities, as well as what all future Phil went through. So his character growth journey actually gets preserved. Plus it's super meta about the fans feelings too.
