“Never mind my hair,” Marcille blurted out, dropping to her knees in front of Falin's chair. “What happened to your hair? Was it lice? Did you get lice?”

Falin's eyes widened in genuine surprise. She scratched her cheek and gave a small, awkward smile. “Oh, this? No, no, it's nothing like that.” She moved her hand up to her ear, as if she wanted to play with a strand of hair that was no longer there. “My hair grew out a bit too much when I was abroad. It was starting to get into my eyes. Laios noticed that and offered to cut my hair.”

    Summary

Falin, thinking she would never get a better opportunity, said yes to Shuro’s proposal. Shuro, too busy floating on cloud nine, didn’t think much about what Laios would do.

This was either his greatest mistake, or a mad stroke of luck.

“Before, long ago,” Falin went on, “he didn't propose to me, but he let me know he was interested. I didn't want to reject him. I didn't want to hurt him. Even though I knew that I wasn't going to return his feelings. I told him that I had to think about it, that I would give him an answer one day. And I hoped I never would have to.” She looked down at her feet. “I didn't want to tell him no and hurt him. But I also didn't want to say yes just to avoid doing that.”

Marcille put her hand on Falin's shoulder and rubbed it lightly. “You hoped he would forget?”
