SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING OF S1 OF PRIME DEFENDERS
They weren't supposed to be fighting Overlord. The Prime Defenders weren't supposed to be captured. So William did the only thing he could do: he ran, and made a deal with a devil.
Basically, this is a AU/What If of how I thought the fight with Overlord was going to go, with a few creative liberties and Mallard playing a much bigger roll. Enjoy.

Astarion was thoroughly confused by his boss. He had been hired as a personal assistant, but Astarion hardly sees him. Gale Dekarios leaves him notes on the fridge with a list of tasks to do and that he’s upstairs if Astarion has any questions. He knows he is real and he’s not just hallucinating: he’s seen far too many empty coffee pots and can constantly hear him moving around.

Summary
Instead of threatening her infant son with the boogeyman, Janet Drake tells Tim that Batman is going to come for him if he doesn't behave. Years later, Tim realises that if he wants a fast way to get adopted, all he has to do is commit a crime so that Batman will take him away.
Years later still, Tim knows that no one is coming for him, but that doesn't make him any less scared. It also doesn't make him any less interested in Batman and his Robins.
