"Do you remember where your home is?" The mermaid let out a deep trill, one that was filled with longing and a pain that Ilya could never imagine. The boy continued to trill, letting out deep pitiful calls, calling to the sea, to his home.
"It's alright." Ilya coaxed, resting his hand on the mermaids, who had gripped the edge of the tub. The mermaid looked at him, agony in his eyes. "I'll get you home."
The mermaid surprised him by rubbing his face along Ilya's hand and let out a chirp.

Summary
Ilya knew that he was bad at being a vampire, and he liked it this way. He knew that he was cursed, that he was a monster, but not inherently evil. He didn't have to be rotten like his father as long as he held onto his principles and the knowledge that he had to stay away from humans, no matter how drawn he felt to them.
Four Lessons. Four Beliefs. A simple construct of rules. Quite easy to follow.
Or at least they had been, until Ilya met the head of the Montreal Coven, a vampire named Theriault. It had been a day like any other, an assignment to build connections with the Coven for his father's dealings. Nothing special. Until Ilya laid eyes on Theriault's thrall.
Just like this, all of Ilya's lessons and rules were blown to pieces.
