Wasim Baksh knew his place.
He was the foreign child cleaning the soldier’s shit, the whore’s bastard they sent to be beaten when the newer recruits needed to prove themselves, the small alpha that had strayed to the wrong side of the border and been kicked around until they found something he could do that made him finally be useful. Now he was their translator, but that hardly made them any less disgusted by what he was and where he came from.
In between all the alphas and betas, the little omega was the only one to ever look Wasim on the eyes as if he, too, was a person. As it turned out, he was the only one they too treated like an animal.

His most frequent patients were teenagers with hangovers, women too shy to admit they were cramping, and perhaps the strangest of all – pain drain addicts, the people who'd gotten so used to have every minor ache and pain leeched from their bones that they mistook merely being alive as a great discomfort.
