It hadn’t escaped her notice that Fiyero had never had a relationship that had lasted longer than two months. Fiyero’s main average was about three weeks. They had made it past the three-week mark, but they were eight days away from the two-month milestone, and Elphaba was expecting the ground to fall out beneath her feet at any moment now.
Elphaba didn’t believe in signs. But she was hoping for one. A sign that she wasn’t setting herself up to be hurt, that it was okay to stop holding back and maybe let herself fall. If Elphaba was completely honest with herself, she was looking for a sign of Fiyero’s commitment.
A casual study date with their friends may give her the sign she's been looking for.

“No, no—don’t be scared. Please don’t be scared.” He ran a hand through his hair again. “I’m just— Would you come with me to the Ozdust?”
The room went very still. And then her mouth opened. Closed. Her expression faltered, shattered, reformed. Confusion gave way to something else, something colder and sharper, and hurt broke across her face like a wave crashing through glass.
“It’s not funny,” she said, voice trembling. “Not at all, Fiyero.”
Fiyero’s heart dropped.
Or,
Fiyero desperately wants to ask Elphaba to be his date to the Ozdust, and it proves to be a much harder quest than he thought it'd be.
