During the hours of daylight, he could wrench himself out of bed, eat and drink, bathe and dress himself. He could function. But he did it all in a sort of numb trance, like performing the steps of a ritual that he knew had no purpose and wouldn’t affect a thing. At night, he lay awake for hours, curled up around himself, until Feng Xin came to lie down beside him and he could hold onto a sleeve. They never talked about it. Only then did he let his eyes fall closed and sleep, comforted by the fact that if Feng Xin left, he would have to be woken first.
But this was now his biggest problem.

A story about Childhood Enemies, who become Teenage Rivals, who become Young Adult Friends, who become something more... but it is most definitely not a story about Love.

“Tell me,” Feng Xin urged, the worry in his gut only building in intensity the longer he stares at such an emotionally raw Mu Qing. “Tell me what you need.”
Mu Qing’s eyes only opened wider at those words, more tears welling up. He couldn’t speak, he could barely even move from the position he had lodged himself into before going stock still.
“Mu Qing,” Feng Xin had to forcefully swallow down the words that almost spilled off the tip of his tongue. Saying, ‘I would give you anything you ask for’, probably would not go over too well in this situation. “What happened?”
“Am I unloveable?”

“Where is General Nan Yang?” He demanded.
The deputy had a bit of Feng Xin’s temper. He didn’t tremble while Mu Qing held him by the collar. Whatever fear his expression held was one not born of Mu Qing’s rage in having to be here, looking for this man’s god. It was an expression Mu Qing might even have had reflected in his face had he not perfected himself nearly a millennia ago when godhood was still unobtainable and spending his life serving a palace was inevitable.
“We don’t know,” the deputy said.
800 years ago, Mu Qing searched for Xie Lian. Looking for Feng Xin too, was just a consequence of that.
He didn't have that same excuse now.

When Jian Lan and Cuocuo begin to fade, Feng Xin knows he needs to just let them go - until he gets the news that Cuocuo's soul is too damaged to enter the Reincarnation Cycle. He needs to do something if he doesn't want his estranged son to just disappear forever, which is where Mu Qing comes in.
Not that either of them knew what they were signing up for when they agreed to help heal the wrath ghost's soul.
