They’ve kissed, they’ve talked, and Will is still learning how to convince himself that it’s real. That they are happening.
And Mike gets softer every time — insisting on proper dates, on details, on staying a little longer each time, as if daring Will to believe. It’s just during an afternoon of paint-stained hands and quiet intimacy that Will finally understands that love isn’t about proving anything — but about tending to every fragile thread that bound their hearts together long before either of them knew what to call it.

el said, “max has nothing to say, so i will. lucas asked her out yesterday.”“and you said yes, right?” will asked back.
“no. why would i say yes?” max looked away, her faux aloofness fooling none of her friends. will grabbed her hand. there was no way max was so committed to her cool and mysterious exterior that she said no to lucas sinclair asking her out.
“because you like him!” el nearly screeched. max shook her head, scoffing.
“doesn’t mean i have to say yes.”
“but you could have said no, then!” el reasoned. will froze.
“if you didn’t say no,” will ventured, “what did you say?”
max looked away while el practically glowered, “she said that she wouldn’t date anybody unless you were dating somebody.”

will pushed one of mike’s boxes to the side, “can you clean this up? i want this half of the room to be for my stuff.” mike raised his hands in surrender.
“rest of the space is yours, picasso.” he gestured to the bed. his music was still blaring from the speaker and now there was the horrifying scrape of boxes across linoleum to accompany it, “what’s your medium? charcoal, paints…?” he drifted off, clearly unable to name another medium of art, “...crayon?”
will shoved his bedsheets into each corner of his mattress, barely looking up, “silence. try it out sometime."
the music paused shortly after.

or will byers meets mike wheeler in a room of darkness. he's loud, messy and slightly socially inept. he's already had the worst last year of his life and he does not need one more thing, or person, piling onto that.
so he's cold. he's icy. he leaves passive aggressive notes on their minifridge (but if mike would just put his socks AWAY).
but the two are destined to be a lot more than just mutually hated roommates. and it all begins with an anonymous radio show Late Night Caller.

Summary
"Have you talked to him today?" Jonathan asked, gesturing to Will, who was now approaching the sink. Mike didn't need Jonathan to explain who he was talking about.
"No, he's been in the basement all day. I thought he was just painting or something," Mike replied, shaking his head before lowering his voice. "I think he's having an episode."
Jonathan nods. "I mean, maybe, but he hasn't had one in a long time," he said, voice growing softer.
Mike knew Will was still recovering from everything, still adjusting to being back home. Everything that had happened in the past couple of years certainly hadn't been great, but Mike thought things were getting better, or at least easier.
"I know," Mike whispered, looking back to Will, making sure he hadn't left the kitchen yet. Will was finishing up rinsing off his plate. Mike turned back to Jonathan. "What should we do?"
"I don't know. I mean, you were always the one that he wanted. You always knew how to talk to him and knew what he needed," Jonathan said, pausing before continuing. "Honestly, I think he would probably just want you."
