“Rose called. She flies to LA tomorrow but she’s gonna come visit us for a couple hours today. She’ll be here at 4, gone by dinner.” Shane delivers this news while placing his bundle down by the firepit. He stands and brushes his hands, then raises a smiling face towards Yuna and Ilya. Yuna will not deny she’s excited to meet Rose Landry, but the timing… if Ilya’s fixed glare on the rippling water was anything to go by, it admittedly could be better.
“Rose Landry is coming today.” Ilya says, confirmation rather than question.
“Yeah, I mean, she’s been so supportive and she’s been keen to see the cottage. I knew she was in the area but she didn’t think she’d have time to come by, but she does, and it seems like a good opportunity for you to meet her, and-"

Ilya and Shane steal away for a two night stay at the Cottage in fall. Yuna and David are there for the afternoon when Shane receives a call from Rose, who he invites over that afternoon to see his place and meet his mystery boyfriend. Ilya has feelings, Shane has regrets, Yuna and David have hearts of gold, and Rose, as usual, has what it takes to make a whole lot of male anxiety melt away.

“You freak out because I–” said your name. It’s so small, almost insignificant, and yet, it has caused so much ruin. “...but Miles was practically humping you in public, and that’s fine."
“It’s different,” Shane stresses like Ilya should understand. That’s the problem, Ilya realizes, because he does understand. But that doesn’t make it any easier.
“Why, because you were making out with Rose Landry when it happened?”
Shane doesn’t acknowledge the words. He shakes his head again and straightens his back as he meets Ilya’s eyes, resolutely.
“Things between us can’t change,” he says.
“They already have. Hollander.”

Ilya witnesses Shane dancing sandwiched between Rose and Miles in the club, with Rose's hands under his shirt and Miles' lips on his neck. When he flees out of there, Shane follows after him, and it changes their following interactions.

His phone shook in his trembling hands as he desperately tried to make the call, but he didn't have his glasses on and he was truly crying now so the screen was just a blur of light.
"I need to— I can't—" He gasped, and Hayden squeezed his hand before gently pulling the phone away from him. Then Shane heard the phone as it began to ring, and ring, and ring, and ring. Then there was silence, and then Ilya's snarky voicemail recording issued through the phone's speakers. Shane was going to be sick...Or...What if the emergency landing was a little bit more of a crash landing?
