    Summary

Steve Rogers spends his days between his 9-to-5 job at Stark Industries, his dark erotic art side hustle, and his passion for the BDSM community. It might not be very common, but it's his life, and he likes it just fine the way it is.

That is, until a six-foot tall, near mute, probably highly traumatized guy in full leather gear calling himself 'The Soldier' falls into his lap one day.

    Summary

He has learned, from listening in cafes and in bars, that Steve Rogers has come to the future with him, and that he is working in SHIELD, and SHIELD is, was, one of Hydra’s many heads.

He knows that Steve Rogers has disappeared. That he was summoned to a hearing and did not attend, and this has made the news. It did not escape Bucky’s notice that Steve Rogers is a match for him, even with the metal arm. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Rogers is going to try to recover the Asset. It may even be that Steve is an Asset himself.

Bucky lets his hand touch the cloth cover of the medical tray. Finds the shape of the tranq gun under it.

Steve comes to the door of the chamber. His eyes go from the tank to the chair and his mouth opens a fraction, the air coming out of him. Bucky’s chest clenches up. There’s such a pained look on Steve’s face. He knows the chair. He knows what it’s for. He’s probably been in it before. They had to wipe Bucky over and over again to get his mind to stop fighting back. God alone knows how much time Rogers has spent in it.

“I’m gonna fix it, Stevie,” Bucky whispers. “I’m gonna get the code and reset you, just like you did for me. But I don’t have the codes yet. So we gotta do it this way for now.”

    He draws and shoots.

Steve wasn’t surprised when Bucky showed up in his dreams, after he was unfrozen.

"Did he shoot you? In the hip?”

Shock flickered across Natasha’s face. “How did you know that?”

Steve felt like all the air left his lungs, and the months of dreaming about Bucky—apparently the real Bucky—came crashing in on him. All of Bucky’s mentions of the mysterious “they,” of being made to forget, of what they made me came into sickening clarity. Steve’s most desperate, unlikely hopes had been that maybe Bucky had just been frozen and lost like him, waiting to be found and thawed out. That, Steve was beginning to understand, had been a vain, childish hope. Something worse had happened to Bucky.

    Summary

“It’s too late, Steve,” Bucky’s voice across the comm is flat, layered with static. “The deadlock’s irreversible. S’the only way.”

Steve knows what nearly dying feels like; knows it better than most, and this—those words, that voice, this impossible burning that courses through him like the serum in reverse, this.

This is so much worse than nearly.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“I didn’t have a plane,” Steve confesses, and the pieces break across Bucky’s face, realization and devastation and so much heartache it cuts through Steve’s own chest before he finishes, before he twists the knife between them: “I didn’t have the ice to make it stop.”

And Bucky understands it. Bucky understands what’s said, what’s meant, and when he pulls Steve into him and hisses with violent conviction to the softness below Steve’s ear—“Never, Stevie, you can’t, not ever”—Steve can’t help but shake in Bucky’s hold, because there was no plane, there was no ice, and there was dying twofold between them until there wasn’t, and Steve believed in God, once.
