“Look,” Jackie tries again as she places her stack of cones on their relevant shelf like she has a thousand times before. She tries not to think about the cobweb she totally just felt brush against her hand, or the smell of Mari in her nose, so deep it almost burns. “Mari, did you know— I mean, have you ever had your heat before?”
Probably better to cut right to the chase, right? Jackie sees Mari freeze out of the corner of her eye, and bites her bottom lip, because oh, right.
Jackie is an alpha, and she’d convinced Mari to come here alone with her, and now Jackie’s asking her about heat, and this could look—
“Like, not in a weird way,” she rushes out awkwardly, and then, clearing her throat, “Sorry, I just mean— not like that. Not like… Not like this.”

The truth remains that nothing can pull Jackie down to earth, and nothing can truly pull her away from Shauna. Nothing except the party. The party, which Jackie is kind of regretting dragging Shauna to in the first place. Normally, these nights don’t really go like this.
Jackie can't find Shauna at Lottie's party.
It's not that she needs her, she just can't find her. Once Jackie actually sees Shauna, she still feels lost, but can't exactly put words to why, which makes it that much more frustrating to talk to her when they're finally face-to-face with each other.
Neither of them can articulate themselves, so they resort to other means of communication.
