Mike tightened his grip on her hand. “You’re… safe?”
Tears sprung to Nanaba’s eyes. “Yes, thanks to you.”
“Safe. Good.”
She nodded her head mutely, fighting back a sob forming in her throat. What was wrong with her? Being in the Scouts was tantamount to a death sentence, it was expected some of them wouldn’t return each time they left the walls. For some reason though, the thought of returning without him seemed impossible. It had been unthinkable until a few moments ago.

Mike Squad joins Hange’s on a mission beyond the walls to capture a titan specimen. Nanaba feels confident initially however, their plans quickly go pear-shaped. When Mike is badly injured, Nanaba is forced to make life-and-death decisions. Sacrificing her squad leader though is not an option, for more reasons than she realizes.

His blurred outline began to fall away with the sound of his voice. Nan felt her knees buckle. Her head swam. Gravity took over.
Before she could even brace for impact, Nanaba felt a solid arm across her back catching her mid fall. She blinked rapidly, trying to force the world back into focus. Though she still couldn’t see the features clearly, Nan immediately recognized the broad man’s stature, his smell, his touch. Mike.

After the Battle of Trost, Mike’s Squad is in charge of keeping the 104th cadet corps occupied. During a grueling training session, Nanaba ignores her body’s cries for rest until she physically cannot any longer. Thankfully, her squad leader is familiar with her tendency towards hyper independence and personally sees to it that she’s taken care of.
