“I’m fine Merlin, stop being such a worry wart. The meeting went fine.” Forcing a smile, he faces Merlin, not showing his face.
Merlin slowly walks up to him.
“Chin up”, tilting the blonde’s face up.
Merlin sees what he really looks like now.
“Oh Arthur”, is all he can say. His glassy eyes, the streaks going down his face, the puffy red eyes.
“Come on, what was it?”, the taller boy asks as Arthur finally looks up at him.
It was at that moment he breaks.

"Care to explain what this curse is then."
Merlin did not. In fact he could think of few worse experiences than the one that was about to befall him, but he supposed he'd have to. His eyes rolled skywards, silently praying for strength, then dropped to the floor in front of Arthur.
"The curse is meant to help produce children. It makes a couple feel-" he took a deep breath, "aroused, so they lay together with the hopes of having a child. The curse lifts when the couple-" he waved his hands around a bit, "-y'know or when it loses power."
Merlin left out that it was meant for magical couples, with the hopes of producing magical children, in order to repopulate after the Purge.
...
"We just need to wait out the curse, it will lose power eventually."
"How long will that take?" Arthur asked, his breathing sounding more laboured.
Merlin swallowed harshly. "A couple of um-" he really didn't want to think about this next fact "- days, maybe."
"Days!" Arthur squawked.

Summary
Two months after Arthur found out about Merlin's magic, the two could not seem to stop fighting. Frustrated by the poor state of their relationship and for still loving Merlin despite his rejection, Arthur feels trapped by his looming marriage to Mithian to settle their kingdoms' dispute over Gedref.
Meanwhile, as Uther descends into madness, he becomes convinced that his son's illicit affair with his servant is causing his reluctance to marry, and he sets Merlin in his crosshairs.
Or: Arthur has it bad and everyone notices.

“Do these things only happen to me because I’m me? Have I done something wrong? Every time, every time I feel like I’m doing alright, something happens and I’m starting to think that-“
“Well, stop thinking,” Merlin cuts him off, a sort of irritation present in his voice. “You haven’t done anything wrong. You can’t blame yourself for being who you are. You are the king, Arthur. People hate you just for bearing the Pendragon name, you mustn’t let them get to you. Don’t let them shake your faith, your heart, Arthur.” Merlin hugs him tighter, his words firm and strong. Arthur almost believes him, he wants to believe him. But the wounds are big, deep enough to scar and far too fresh for him to let him forgive himself.
