No version of this where I don't come get you, is there? He'd said, all those loops ago. And he'd meant it — he genuinely never considered not going to get Edwin. He's always felt drawn to him, like he could understand Edwin on a cosmic level that he was never able to fully describe. He could never fully explain why he stayed with Edwin, instead of going with Death all those years ago — he thought, maybe he was just scared. Scared of moving on, scared of the unknown, but that was never it. He was scared, but not of not knowing where he was going. Somewhere, deep inside he was absolutely terrified he'd never be able to get to know Edwin. That meeting him was just a small intersection of their lives, a crossover in fate, never to meet again.
So, he stayed, and he was never sure why.
(Or, Charles and Edwin are the literal reincarnations of Orpheus and Eurydice and then they're a little more)

“For someone who claims not to like thinking,” Edwin says, raising an eyebrow, “you do a remarkably good job of it.”
Charles laughs. “Tell that to my old teachers, mate.”
“If they disagree, then they can’t be very qualified.” Edwin says this simply, like it’s just a fact of life. Like it’s plainly obvious that if anyone thinks Charles is stupid, it’s they who are at fault.
Or: Charles grew up poor and is likely to stay that away, his job at the magic store notwithstanding. By the time he meets Edwin, he's decided that he wants a new life. In between figuring out what's up with the mysterious wish-granting pigeons, and whether he can go to the Royal Ball, Edwin makes him want to take a chance on being happy as well.
