Summary
In the wake of another bust during his apartment hunt, Buck winds up at the place he feels safest - with Tommy. A shared night ends in a shared morning, setting Buck on a path of realization and growth. He has to examine where his place is and whether he can continue existing in the exceedingly suffocating environment of the firehouse that was once his home.
Choices must be made, and perhaps, it is for the best if Buck does like everyone says and is actually selfish.
- post season 8 AU where Buck gets back together with Tommy, questions his place at the 118, and gets to spread his wings.

Elaborating on another story I wrote, which had this little paragraph: "They had fallen into little domestic habits rather quickly. Evan got up after a few hours of sleep just to cook a shared meal for them; Tommy left sweet little notes with a perfectly doctored cup of coffee and perhaps hid spicier ones for Evan to find later." Evan swallowed, drawing a breath. “So, uh, the whole box thing started after finding out about Daniel—Maddie gave me the stuff she’d saved for me, and I needed a place for it—and for a while, I didn’t add much, just little things, but it was nice, having a place to store mementos. But, then, uh, after the lightning strike—the coma—it became more about having proof I existed, and it started to become a thing.”
The poignant tragedy of the whole fucking situation ached under his sternum, the burning frustration and anger at the unfairness that someone as good as Evan had gotten saddled with a shit hand like this—and that was when it really clicked for him.
Whether it was carrying some of the weight or simply being a safe harbor in the storm, he wanted to be that for Evan, for as long as he’d allow.
Tommy wakes to find Evan already downstairs, coffee made, and staring daggers at a busted-up shoebox in the living room. Evan is clearly not okay, and he's not jumping to explain why he's upset either.
No worries though, because Tommy is nothing if not patient and as stubborn as a mule, so he'll just sip his coffee and wait, giving him the space he needs to open up when he's ready.
