“What will I do with you, baby?”
Like a droplet in the ocean, the stranger's deep voice ripples. Resonant enough to linger in Yeonjun's bones, gentle enough to fade away. The boy cradles the white cat’s head, rubbing soothing lines between her squeezed-shut eyes. His body is hunched over as if to shield her from the world, slow-moving fingertips combing through her street-soiled fur, focused on picking away little pieces of dirt. There’s something so delicate about him. He adores animals, Yeonjun can tell.
“She’s sick.”
It takes a moment for Yeonjun to realise the handsome boy is talking to him. He’s doe-eyed, with a face like fresh snow.
Yeonjun’s heart jumps.
Or: Two strangers take care of a sick cat, become co-parents, and fall in love with each other—told through a series of winters.

It’s absurd. Unreasonable. Wu Suowei has the fingers of his hand curled around his, the smallest of smiles on his face. He faintly smells like the miniature rainforest he had crafted so painstakingly for Little Jealousy, and not like another man as Chi Cheng so feared. Everything should be fine, and yet. Chi Cheng still feels the unease that had encased him ever since Gangzi had spoken of all the possibilities of others.
Others looking at Wu Suowei and noticing the handsome lines of his face, the warmth of his eyes, the soft cadence of his voice — others coveting what is his.

“I like it when you take care of me,” Yeonjun mumbles softly, words muffled with sleep. “It’s my favourite thing in the world.”
It’s just like Yeonjun to say things like that—skirting silly and sentimental in one breath like it’s nothing, as if it doesn’t flow into Soobin’s veins and shake his soul.
“I like it when you let me,” Soobin says, speaking to the darkness above them. How intimate it is—he realises—to be in Yeonjun’s bed after midnight in the dark, surrounded by lingering traces of his cologne, to sit in his bed as a welcome visitor and touch his hair in a way so many others have only fantasised about. It’s almost too much to have felt so close to Yeonjun all day, to have watched him fall apart and helped piece him back together, and Soobin wonders if these were all lines he shouldn’t have crossed because now everything between them feels different and though Soobin can’t pinpoint why, he can pinpoint exactly when.
Now.
Or: When Yeonjun's first relationship comes to a mysterious end, Soobin revisits feelings he thought he buried a long, long time ago.

All idols wear soulbands around their wrists to hide their soulmate’s name: as idols there’s an expectation to be single and appear forever-attainable so that their fans can wonder what name is written on their wrist and believe that there’s a chance it could be their own.
Soobin gave up on a future with a soulmate when he became an idol. He never expected to get a soulmark — and then he did.
