One family slinks away into the shadows and sobs and clutches their child for the last time, but for the others, the revelry that night is all the more exultant for the knowledge that if for only a little longer, they were spared. The people of Lomei are never far from death, and on sacrifice days, when they draw closer than ever to its embrace, they are reminded to cherish the value of life.
The horned god feeds, and the kingdom endures—but after two thousand ceremonies, the unthinkable happens: The chosen name is that of the Princess of Lomei herself.
