What I'd Spend To Have You

Summary:

Daisuke is used to getting what he wants through money alone, so this should be no different. He doesn't know how much he needs to spend, nor does he care. All he knows is that he has to have Katou Haru as his. No matter how much it may cost.

Notes:

Hi guys! This is the first time in a little while that I've actually written something seriously. I hope it turned out okay, especially since I don't have a good grasp of anyone's personality.

Chapter 1: 900 Million

Chapter Text

Katou Haru, a member of the Modern Crime Prevention Task Force’s Police Department. Passionate, hates dishonesty. Originally belonged to Division 1 in the police force, but was demoted due to-

“Mr. Kambe?” Bored eyes moved to the voice in question, closing the file HEUSC had sent him. Yukihiro Kiyomizu, if he recalled correctly, was the one who had addressed him. He was the boss of the Modern Crime Prevention Task Force. He was a cheerful man who took care of his workers. He also seemed to have an interest in tinkering with models when he should be working.

Daisuke lowered the file onto his desk. “Yes, what is it?” He had to admit he was a tad irritated with how the man interrupted his reading, but that did not matter. He had all the time in the world to study up on Katou Haru.

And if he didn’t have time?

He’d just buy some more.

“I was wondering if you’d like to talk about your potential partner when working here with us.” Yukihiro straightened his glasses with a kind smile, not noticing how his statement caught the eye of every other person in the office,

That wouldn’t be a bad idea, however Daisuke was already more than aware of who he had wanted to be his work partner. His eyes trailed over to where Katou Haru sat, the only one who was not obviously eavesdropping on the conversation him and his boss were having. In fact, the man began to aggressively flip through different papers in a file he had been browsing.

Daisuke had to restrain himself from smirking at the display. So headstrong that man was.

In the small amount of time he had known Katou Haru he had seen him jump into a moving vehicle to yell at him, jump out of a vehicle only to get into a different one which held an explosive device, look him dead in the eye before letting go of a bridge to fall into the water below instead of asking for aid, and had looked a missile directly before taking the time to finally dodge to prevent fatal injury.

Katou Haru.

Katou Haru...

An interesting man, that was to be sure.

“-and then we have…Mr. Kambe, are you listening?” Daisuke blinked a few times before noticing Yukihiro was trying to get his attention. Ah, he must have been ignoring him.

“My apologies.” He responded. “My mind was elsewhere. Please repeat what you were saying.”

Yukihiro nodded and rose a hand, palm up to show off different people of the agency. “We have Kamei Shinnosuke don’t let his lack of enthusiasm fool you-“

“Hey!”

“He is actually quite a good worker when you put him up to it.” He moved his hand to the only girl in the office. She was the one who had offered him a gummy fish when he had arrived if he remembered correctly. She waved at him, a cheerful smile and small blush gracing her features.

“This is Saeki Mahoro. She is a sweet girl who is always looking for new work and ways to help out. She also brings plenty of snacks, so you’ll never go hungry with her around.” This prompted a small giggle to leave Mahoro, her cheeks getting brighter at the comment.

“That man over there with his nose in that gambling book is Yumoto Teppei. He works hard, like everyone here, however he has a love for gambling and boats.”

Teppei did nothing more than roll his eyes at this introduction. Daisuke rose an eyebrow as the man returned to paying attention to his book for real this time. Teppei had started pretending to read when the conversation began.

How he knew?

Well, he hadn’t turned the page in the few minutes that had transpired and he wasn’t a slow reader from what Daisuke could tell.

“And sitting on the couch in the corner over there is Nakamoto Chosuke.” The man smiled and nodded his head in acknowledgement at the introduction. Daisuke politely nodded back as Yukihiro continued his introduction. “He’s a veteran detective here and is extremely skilled at what he does.”

Yukihiro finally moved his attention to the final, most important person in the room.

“And this is-“

“Save it.” Katou Haru grumbled out, raising a hand. He lowered it, dragging his eyes away from the page he was reading to glare at Daisuke. “We already know each other.”

Daisuke didn’t bother restraining his smirk. “That we do.”

Yukihiro let out a bellowing laugh, placing his hands behind his back. “Yes, yes. I know! You two have already worked together on a case, haven’t you?”

“No.”

“Yes”

A pair of angered eyes met Daisuke’s calm ones. He felt satisfaction in receiving that look.

Anger was a beautiful expression on Katou Haru.

Daisuke could only imagine what other expressions the man could make.

Daisuke finally broke the connection between their eyes, preferring to address his new boss. “Truthfully, I have already selected who I wish to have as my partner.”

If Yukihiro was surprised, he did not show it, but instead maintained the same cheerful and kind smile he had been seeing quite often from him. “Oh? That makes this easier then.” He gestured for Daisuke to stand before leading him to his desk. He took a seat behind it, reaching into a drawer to produce a file with the name Kambe Daisuke printed on the label.

He opened it, pulling out a paper and grabbed a pen. He looked up at Daisuke expectedly. “Well?”

Daisuke placed a hand into one of his pockets, the other hand pointing to a certain dirty blonde detective.

“Him.”

All eyes moved to the location he was pointing to. Chosuke shook his head with a knowing smile. Kamei’s jaw dropped in disbelief. Mahoro let out a childish giggle of delight. Teppei did nothing more than lower his book and blink in surprise.

Katou Haru’s response was the most interesting, as expected.

“Excuse me?!” He jumped out of his chair, hands slamming onto his desk as he glowered at Daisuke.

Daisuke stared at him blankly. “Did I stutter?”

“Why…You…I…” He grit his teeth, seeming as if he was trying to kill Daisuke with looks alone.

So fascinating…

“No!” He suddenly shouted. “You hear me? The answer is no!”

Yukihiro sighed, the first sign of displeasure Daisuke’s seen since he had entered. “I’m sorry, Mr. Kambe, but in order for partners to work together he needs to consent. Our department is small, so we’re usually allowed to choose and decide for ourselves on-“

“That’s fine.” Daisuke interrupted, the hand in his pocket toying with his glasses for a brief moment. “How much then?”

“Pardon?”

“How much for you to make Katou Haru my partner?”

“Hey, that’s not how this works here!” His future partner protested behind him. Daisuke scoffed at this.

Of course this was how it worked.

This is how it worked anywhere.

Everyone has their price after all.

Yukihiro let out a nervous laugh, scratching at his cheek. “I-I’m afraid Katou’s right. You can’t possibly get me to-“

“How much?” He pressed.

“You’re serious...?” The boss seemed to think for a moment, before clearing his throat and putting his natural smile back onto his face. His voice adopted a playful tone. “Hmm, let’s see…I’d say at least one million yen.” His words trailed off into a laugh.

Daisuke clicked his tongue, halting his boss’ laughter.

He turned his body around, staring directly at Katou Haru. His body was still leaning on his desk, his hands keeping him upright, and his eyes…

Still glaring so intensely at him.

So much anger.

So much annoyance.

Daisuke’s eyes narrowed at him.

Katou Haru…

Priceless

Daisuke lifted his hand to Yukihiro, palm up.

He waited.

“What?” Yukihiro questioned.

“Your bank card.” He responded coolly. “I’ll make the transfer accordingly, but for the correct amount.”

As his boss began to withdraw his card from his wallet and Daisuke began to take out his glasses, the sound of a chair falling to the ground resonated throughout the room.

In less than a few seconds, Daisuke’s glasses had been taken away from him.

His eyes widened for a fraction of a moment, taken by surprise as he found Katou Haru taking hold of his glasses.

“Oh no you don’t!” He protested, backing away quickly before Daisuke processed what had just happened.

No one said a word.

No one moved a muscle.

Daisuke met Katou Haru’s eyes once more but found them glimmering with pride and delight.

Katou Haru…

Oh, what I’d spend to have you.

As much as that look in his eyes was mesmerizing, Daisuke had to admit…

Seeing them widen in realization and fear was bewitching as well.

He got to see just that as he reached into a different pocket, this one located inside his suit’s jacket.

In one swift motion he placed his back up glasses on and grabbed Yukihiro’s bank card. He saw Katou Haru gasp, hearing him begin to move again to try to take this pair away from him as well. He danced right out of reach, his thin smirk in place as he made the transfer.

Daisuke removed his glasses with a flourish, his lips stretching wider and his eyes focusing fully on his future partner.

Or rather…

He threw the bank card back onto Yukihiro’s desk, the plastic sliding right back in front of the man.

“I transferred 900 million yen.” He explained, speaking to Yukihiro, but facing Katou Haru to watch his expressions change. “100 million yen per letter of his name. Will this suffice?”

Behind Daisuke, Yukihiro looked conflicted as he quickly fished out his phone to check his bank account. His face paled as he realized his new recruit was telling the truth. 900 million yen…

“I-I…” He smiled sadly, his voice barely audible. “I’m sorry, Katou…”

Katou Haru’s face had paled. Daisuke could see sweat gathering on his brow. He looked so displeased…

Satisfying

Daisuke held out a hand to Katou Haru.

His Partner.

“I’ll be looking forward to working with you, Katou Haru.”
