Work Header

Not the first time, but the last.

Summary:

After meeting with Wright again, Edgeworth had learned his limits and when to have some rest. But what if for the first time in years he gets so caught up in his work he forgets to look after himself?

Notes:

Did I write this at 4 a.m. instead of working in my two ongoing translations? Maybe. But don't worry, those are on their way too.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The situation Phoenix Wright found himself in wasn’t exactly new. Edgeworth had just finished a big case, one that had kept him away from home most of the time for the past two weeks. Saying he was pent-up was the understatement of the century. He urgently needed some stress relief, so of course he had jumped on his husband as soon as he had gotten home. That was something that usually happened when one of them had been working on an especially difficult or long case, they were no longer able to keep their hands of each other, and let’s not talk about the rare occasion when they have worked on the same case and faced each other in court. So yeah, this wasn’t new.

Miles pushed Phoenix harshly against the wall, smashing their lips together and softly running his hands over the other's chest under his shirt. The situation had two possible outcomes: either it escalated into something less family-friendly, because they were adults and were under a lot of stress regularly; or it was left as a making out session that lasted as long as their lungs would allow. And judging by the fact that the defense attorney was just softly caressing his significant other's body in a way that almost counted as a massage, it would probably be the latter. They parted their mouths for a moment to catch their breath, then instantly went back to kissing passionately. What happened next was, however, completely unexpected. In the middle of the kiss, with only a light swaying as a warning, Miles' body went limp and collapsed on the floor, leaving a very much shocked Phoenix frozen against the wall for a couple of seconds while his brain tried to catch up with what was going on.
“Miles?” He finally called, looking at the fallen man. A few more moments went by before he was finally able to move his body.
“Miles!” He basically threw himself to the floor, hands hovering right over his husband, unsure of what to do. The prosecutor’s chest was rising and falling steadily, and other than the slight palor to his face he wasn't any other symptoms of sickness. He took a moment to think of what he was supposed to do. He had to try and help Miles wake up, and if he remembered correctly the best way to do that was to elevate his legs so blood could flow back into his brain, so that’s exactly what he did, placing the prosecutors legs on his shoulders (Yes, it looked weird, but it was the fastest way to do it). He also undid his vest and took his jabot off.

Sure enough, it took less than a minute for his husband to wake up.
“Phoenix?” He asked, moving his head in a tired manner, hands rubbing on his face, then tried to sit up.
“Woah there, not so fast. Lay back down, Miles, you just fainted. Do you remember what happened?” Said, the lawyer, a hand gently pressed against the other’s chest, resting the other’s legs on his shoulder, as he had nothing else to support them and keep them up.
“We were making out, then I got a bit dizzy, but I thought it was from the lack of oxygen. Seems like that’s not it, though” He answered, an arm thrown over his eyes, which were being hurt by the too bright light on their ceiling.
“Okay, that sounds right. Do you think you hit your head? Does it hurt at all?” The response he received was a head shake.
“Then sit up slowly, let’s get you off the floor” Wright carefully pulled on Miles’ arm until he was sitting up, then in a combined effort they removed his jacket and vest and moved until his back was pressed against the wall. Without the lawyer having to say anything, the prosecutor folder his legs up and placed his head between his knees, taking slow breaths.
“Are you feeling dizzy?” Asked his significant other, placing an arm on his back.
“Hmm. Can you… Bring me a sports drink… Or something?”
“Sure, be right back” He rushed to the kitchen, and looked all over their fridge for some short or artificially flavoured sport drink, yet they seemed to have none. Instead he picked one of Trucy’s milkshakes, making a mental note to apologise later.
“Here. I could only get a milkshake, but I can go to the store real fast if you want” A hand appeared in front of him, waiting for the bottle.
“This should do. Thanks” He proceeded to slowly drink the sugary beverage, small sips at a time, until he finished almost the whole bottle. His husband’s stare never left him.

“Want me to take you to the sofa, honey?” Asked said husband.
“I’m perfectly capable of walking by myself, Phoenix. Stop fussing so much over me.” And now he was cranky. Well, damn his mood, the spiky haired man was having none of that shit.
“You passed out on me, Miles. How do you want me to stop fussing? I’m worried about you. Come on, let’s take this conversation to the sofa, the floor can’t be that comfortable” They stared intently at each other for a bit, but Miles eventually gave up and moved to the couch without commenting on how the love of his life was hovering at his side, ready to catch him should he faint again. Of course that didn’t happen. Instead they ended both on the sofa, Phoenix sitting behind Miles, his arms around the other’s waist.

“I’m fine, Wright. Everything’s alright” Said the man with grey hair, placing his hand atop one of those trapping him and rubbing circles into the knuckles of the only person he has ever loved.
“No it’s not. People aren’t supposed to just faint, Miles. You scared me, I though you had gone and died on me, or that something was wrong and you weren’t going to wake up. I felt so useless. Don’t do that again, please” He was resting his head on the dip between the other’s neck and shoulder, trying to calm down. The situation had only weighted on him after he was sure his partner was alright, all the feelings coming down at once.
“I’m sorry for scaring you, my love. I’ll be alright after resting for a bit, don’t worry.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to go to the doctor? I’m sure it’s nothing, but just to be sure...”
“Yeah, it’s fine. It’s not the first time this happens, so I know what I’m doing” That- That wasn’t what Phoenix was expecting to hear. They had been going out for six years now, had been married for one and a half, and he doesn’t remember going through this before. Then a scary thought was born in his head: Had Miles been going through this on his own?
“What do you mean it has happened before? Why didn’t you tell me?” There was hurt in his voice.
“Ah, no- I- I didn’t mean it like that. It was before we started dating. I was too worried about perfection, I would constantly overwork myself. I forgot to eat and sleep, it wasn’t a good time. But then you appeared and I realised I didn’t have to be so perfect, and I learned how to cut myself some slack. I guess because I don’t have many cases as chief prosecutor I overdid it with this one” It was so unlike him to rumble like that. It showed just how much he wanted Phoenix to know it wasn’t his fault.

“*Sight* Look, I’m not gonna get mad or lecture you or anything, at least yet. We are not in the mood for that. But just answer this: When was the last time you had a decent meal, Miles?” Silence, and then:
“...A couple of days ago. Maybe three? Being honest, I don’t even know. I’m sorry” He planted a kiss on Phoenix’s cheek as an apology.
“What am I gonna do with you? Look, you go to bed and get into some comfortable clothes and I’ll make some soup for when you wake up. I’ll join you in bed as soon as Trucy gets home from her shopping trip with Apollo, ‘kay?”
“Yeah, thanks. I love you, Phoenix”
“I love you too, Miles. Now go get some well deserved rest”

Notes:

I've changed this so many times. I even google what fainting was like so it would look right. Anyway, I had a fun time writing it, so I hope you enjoyed reading this fanfic!
