Work Text:

“Auntie Fran!” Trucy grinned, running and hugging the prosecutor tightly. “You look gorgeous !”

“Thank you, Maus,” Franziska smiled and hugged the seventeen year old back. “You look lovely yourself…!”

Franziska’s teenage niece was dressed in a sparkling royal blue dress that tapered out just above her knees, a light blue bow was tied snuggly around the magician’s waist. She wore gold diamond shaped earrings and a simple pearl necklace.

“Yeah, but I’m not the one getting married!” Trucy giggled as she held out an eyeshadow palette with some tubes of eyeliner and mascara. “Do you mind helping me out with my makeup?”

“Oh, of course, sit down,” Franziska nodded. “Has Jinxie arrived yet?”

“No, she and her dad got stuck in traffic,” Trucy replied careful to keep her head still and her eyes shut as Franziska started with a white base. “There was an accident somewhere and there’s this huge jam! It doesn’t seem like anyone was hurt, thank goodness, Jinxie thinks it was just a fender-bender…!”

“That is good news,”

“Yeah, and when Jinxie texted me, they were starting to clear up…!” Trucy pulled out her phone and opened the picture her girlfriend had sent her. “She got the chance to do her makeup in the car so she’s all ready to go!”

Jinxie had white eyeshadow that flared out into red, starting from her lower lid, the top lid was lined with black eyeliner. Her lips were decorated with bright red rouge and heart shaped. Her makeup was very traditional to the fashion of Tenma Town.

“She looks lovely, do tell her I think it suits her well…!” Franziska added, starting with the blue layer, being careful to blend the two hues seamlessly. “What do you want me to do with the eyeliner…?”

“Could you do the cat eye? My hands are still really shaky, even when I practiced…”

Franziska shook the tube of black liquid liner and worked diligently to make two identical swipes that accentuated Trucy’s glittering blue eyes.

“Here, look in the mirror,” Franziska said as she handed the teenager a handheld mirror. “What do you think?”

Trucy’s eyes grew wide and she grinned, her lips bright pink and glossy, as she inspected her aunt’s handiwork in admiration.

“This looks so good!” Trucy replied before hugging the older woman. “Thank you, thank you, thank you , Auntie Fran!”

Franziska kissed the top of Trucy’s head, careful not to smudge her lipstick onto her forehead. “Always, you look wonderful, Maus,” Franziska said. “You and Jinxie will hopefully be able to dance plenty at the reception.”

“We will! Jinxie’s really excited too!” Trucy grinned. “We’ve been practicing!”

“I know you’ll both look absolutely divine on the floor… and I will be able tell anyone and everyone who is impressed all about my wonderful niece!” Franziska nodded. “And speaking of saccharine couples, where is that little brother of mine?”

Trucy snickered, “Daddy decided he wanted to wear a bowtie to this, but he doesn’t know how to tie a bowtie…” She replied. “So Papa has to help him out… between you and me, I think he did that on purpose !”

“I would not put it past that man!” Franziska chuckled.

“Yeah, they’re so gross and sappy, worse than Polly and Klav!” Trucy added, never failing to playfully jab her newfound brother and his boyfriend. “I can’t wait for you to see Auntie Maya, she looks gorgeous !”

Franziska couldn’t ignore that patter in her chest, the way her heart seemed to do backflips at the mention of her beloved’s name, or the flutter in her stomach anticipating the ceremony.

If there was one thing Franziska knew for sure, it would be that Maya Fey would be the most beautiful bride in the world.

“Mystic Maya, are you excited?” Pearl asked, never quite breaking out of her old habit of calling her cousin with her honorific, “Isn’t it going to be romantic ?”

Maya was wearing a white yukata decorated with a myriad of pink flowers, alongside a thin pink shawl and thin black sandals. It was a much better fit for a summer wedding than a heavier kimono.

Maya smiled as she put the last pin in her hair, a near perfect imitation of her mother’s own hair as depicted in the restored master’s scroll. She traced the ink of the master’s seal, identical to the talisman that she was now wearing on this day.

Maya sighed, a sense of longing still aching in her heart all these years since the tragedy.

She might have been around my age when this was painted…? Maya wondered. I don’t think I was born yet…

“You look beautiful, my love…” a quiet, melodic, and soothing voice said to the master. “You must be so happy…”

Maya turned around in shock, facing an older woman where her teenage cousin once stood. She still wore the light blue yukata that Pearl was wearing, and her hair was still the same, but she was slightly taller, her face much more mature, and her eyes were warm in an all too familiar way to Maya.

“M-Mom?” Maya gasped.

“Hello Maya… it’s been a while…” Misty smiled. “You’ve grown up so much…”

Without hesitation, Maya lunged into her mother’s embrace, hugging her as tightly as she could. She didn’t hesitate with her tears or sobs, all of her emotions just poured out of her in that moment. Misty held her daughter tightly, running circles over the pink flower designs on Maya’s yukata, humming as she did so.

“Y-You’re here?” Maya hiccupped. “Pearly summoned you…?”

Misty chuckled and cupped the medium’s face, bringing her eye level to her own. “Well, she wanted to make today more special than it already was…” Misty replied. “She wrote to us the night you asked her to be your maid of honor…”

“Wait…! ‘Us’.... does she mean?” Maya gasped, feeling another round of tears welling up in her eyes.

Misty nodded, running her thumb against Maya’s cheek. “Yes, my sweet girl, but that will have to wait until after the ceremony…” Misty said. “Let me look at you…”

Maya grinned and nodded, allowing her mother to get a perfect look at her adult daughter. Maya watched as Misty’s stormy grey eyes welled up with tears.

“You’re living a good life, Maya… I couldn’t be more proud of you,” Misty whispered. “I… I’m sorry that I missed so much… but I haven’t left you… neither of us have…”

“Mom…” Maya sniffled.

“I’ve made many mistakes, but you and your sister were never any one of them…” Misty said. “And I will always be close to your heart, no matter what happens…”

Maya hugged her tightly, unable to hide her own tears at this point, “That’s all I’ve ever wanted to hear…”

They held each other as long as they were able, Misty singing her praises to her daughter. Eventually, the older woman started to fade away, morphing back into the teenaged Pearl, who was still holding onto Maya tightly.

“Thank you so much, Pearly,” Maya sniffled. “Thank you…”

Pearl smiled and kissed the crown of her forehead, running circles into her back, “I’m really happy you liked it, Mystic Maya…”

Franziska grinned as she led herself down the wedding aisle, seeing Maya, who was the pique vision of beauty in the prosecutor’s eyes. Her beloved was holding an array of light pink bell shaped flowers and white blossoms, in contrast to Franziska’s bluebell ensemble. It was as if she had become the goddess of spring herself.

Both Trucy and Pearl, as the esteemed maids of honor, stood at the end of the pews waiting to present the rings as soon as their vows were finished.

Franziska looked over to her left: Miles, who was wearing a dark maroon suit, smiled reassuringly at her. For a man who kept his emotions close to himself, there was no doubt that he was radiating as much joy for Franziska as she was herself. Franziska even swore that for a brief moment, his eyes were already welling up with tears, before the vows even started.

Phoenix Wright, wearing a dark royal blue suit to complement his husband’s crimson, nodded in respect. Despite their ups and downs, despite every time they faced off against each other, they were to be family, and Franziska found that she would not be dreading it.

I’ve come a long way since that eighteen year old brat marched in with a perfect record and a thirst for vengeance… Franziska thought. You may still be a fool, but you’re a fool that I’ve come to respect…

Once she joined her beloved, they held each other’s hands, joining the two bouquets into a myriad of different colors. Her Honorable Justine Courtney smiled at the two brides and started to officiate their vows.

There were so many emotions rushing through the prosecutor that she could barely register what else was happening around her. She took in every detail of Maya’s face, as if she were seeing it again for the first time, reveling in the pink flush that was forming under her gaze.

As Maya recited her vows, Franziska couldn’t help but admire how melodious her voice was, this was the woman she wanted to marry, the woman she wanted to spend the rest of her life with no matter what happens.

Justine turned to Franziska, beckoning her to share her vows. Franziska recited them perfectly, despite the flutter in her stomach, despite the catch in her voice, she practiced for hours upon hours in the mirror to make sure it was perfect.

It was what Maya, her most darling wife, deserved.

Justine motioned for Trucy and Pearl to come up with the rings. The teenagers were already wiping up their tears as they smiled, Franziska squeezed her niece’s hand as she took the sapphire ring that was to be Maya’s. Carefully and slowly, both women exchanged their rings, Franziska now adorned an amethyst jewel.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the chapel, Phoenix had his arm wrapped around Miles as he dabbed his tears with a handkerchief, Gumshoe was moments away from bawling while Lang held his hand tightly, Sebastian was already wailing and Kay blowing into an oddly cravat-like handkerchief. Franziska’s own vision blurred with tears seeing all of their beloved friends celebrate that wonderful spring day with the brides.

“Well, by the power vested in me, I pronounce you both lawfully wedded wives,” Justine said as she smiled warmly at the brides. “You may now kiss the bride…”

Maya didn’t hesitate in pulling Franziska into the kiss, she could feel the spirit medium’s tears falling as she grinned, causing Franziska’s knees to go weak and to melt in Maya’s (her wife’s !) embrace.

“Esteemed friends and family, I present to you,” Justine called to the audience, “Master Fey and Mrs. von Fey…!”

There was a raucous applause as Maya and Franziska walked arm in arm down the aisle, together for the first time as wives, the cheers of their loved ones more melodic and harmonious than music itself.

A rose by any other name smells just as sweet, even more so as the shackles of the past are broken and their prisoner set free.
