Work Text:
Slade was watching his cameras that he had put up around the Titans Tower, when he saw Robin pacing around, looking upset. He was holding a phone, and he appeared to be talking with someone. Slade unmuted that camera and heard Robin trying to talk, but being cut off and yelled at. Well, now Slade knew who Robin was talking to.
In his head he started humming while thinking about Robin.
You're on the phone with the Bat and he's upset
He's going off about something that you said
Slade huffed. Typical Bat, being serious and moody.
'Cause he doesn't get your humor like I dooo
Slade appreciated Robins remarks and jokes. If it wasn’t for his mask Robin would see him smile, but the boy seemed to know anyways, flashing a grin.
You’re in your room, it's a typical Titan night.
Robin had ended the call by now, throwing his phone away and laying on the bed. He’d had dinner and a movie night with his friends before, like they usually did.
And listening to the kind of music he doesn’t like
Dick was listening to music he knew Bruce never understood. It seemed he had something in common with the music then.
And he'll never know your story like I do
Batman and Robin don’t fight for the same reasons. Batman hides his rage and guilt and lust for revenge behind words of justice, while Robin right from the start just wanted to make a change in the world, make a difference. Slade understood that, and respected it.
But he wears tight shirts
The business suits, the tight ”Brucie” outfits, were for work and women. None of it was welcoming for a child, for Dick.
All the time he flirts
Slade knew that Bruce would leave Dick alone at a gala, party, gathering or any other social event in favor of going with a pretty lady. He had seen it many times and he never understood how Bruce didn’t see how he was turning Dick down again and again.
He is a playboy, you’re nothing but his decoy
Slade knew that people calling Dick a ’charity case’ hurt him, but with the way Bruce treated him, it was hard to believe otherwise.
(But I’m) Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you’re looking for has been here the whole time
It did take some time for Slade to realize, but he cared about Robin. He checked up on him as often as he could, making sure to run into him and have a chat while they fought.
If you could see that I'm the one
Who understands you
Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me
You belong with me
We fight in the streets, I banter with my little birdie
I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be
Laughing at your joke thinking to myself
Hey, isn't this easy?
And you've got a smile
That can light up this whole town
I haven't seen it in a while
Since he brought you down
You say you're fine, I know you better than that
Hey, what you doing with a ”dad” like that?
He wears fake smiles
It’s, a disguise
He doesn’t care, why else would he leave you here
(And I’m) Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time
If you could see that I'm the one
Who understands you
Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me
Standing by and waiting on a rooftop
All this time how could you not know, Robin?
You belong with me
You belong with me
Oh, I remember you driving to my haunt
In the middle of the night
I'm the one who says (it’s) okay
When you know you're 'bout to cry
And I know your favorite songs
And you tell me 'bout your dreams
Think I know where you belong
Think I know it's with me
Can't you see that I'm the one
Who understands you?
Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me
Standing by and waiting on a rooftop
All this time how could you not know, tell me e e,
You belong with me
You belong with me
You belong with me
Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me?
You belong with me.
