There were barely any patrons at that time of night. Morning? Whatever. It meant that it wasn't long before the server came over to find Clint slumped onto the table with his forehead pressed to the tacky surface and his hands covering the back of his neck.
"Are you ready to order or do you need a few minutes?"
"Just coffee for now," Clint told the tabletop.
A few minutes passed an a mug was set on the table. Clint listened to the liquid filling the mug but didn't move to take it when it was full.
"Need any creamer?"
"No."
There was a long enough pause Clint thought the waitress had left, but then, "Need to talk?"
"No," he said, knowing full well he sounded sulky. "Just. Why did I do that? It was so stupid."

Years later he was happy at While Collar as Neal Caffrey, or as happy as he could be without his family. His brothers, on the other hand, have learned exactly what happened to their oldest and have been searching since he left. Lucky for them, Tim has a meeting scheduled with Peter Burke. Child neglect isn't all bad, Tim tells himself when his parents sends apologies and mail-delivered gifts and an increased credit line for his 10th birthday. None of the other ten-year-olds have this kind of independence -- even Robin has a bedtime. And he's heard from Ives that his parents limit his "screentime", which sounds quite barbaric. So this is fine, really. He's ten and will be starting eighth grade in the fall. He doesn't need his parents in order to thrive, he can grow on his own, in the shadow of their neglect and inattention. He can be their set-it-and-forget-it kid.

Tim is doing great being an independent vigilante, he's fine! He doesn't need help, he's definitely not estranged from the family -- he's just being independent.

“I don’t do things in half measures. I’m gonna be there for every PTA meeting, every club invite, every fucking carpool you understand? I don’t need some white bread, pearl clutching bitch telling me I’m a shitty Guardian just ‘cause I didn’t ask for this.”

The only thing worse than crawling out of your own grave to find your father had replaced you with the first black haired, blue eyed preteen he could find, is said replacement begging you to sign emergency foster papers... except maybe you signing said papers and having to learn how to be a parent on the fly...
