Chapter 1: Interrupted Coffee Run

Chapter Text

“Dabi! You ruined my new shirt.” Kio huffed in annoyance, looking down at the brown coffee stains blemishing the fabric.

The dark-haired man paused on the sidewalk. He would be lying if he said it was an accident bumping into their shoulder, causing the hot coffee to spill on them. He’s a villain, what can he say… It’s only natural for him to cause problems.

The two had just been sent on a coffee run before the League’s meeting to discuss their plan of action against the heroes. Hey, even villains need coffee. They may be villainous, but they’re definitely not the most energetic crowd.

“Oops.” Dabi said monotonously.

Kio was used to Dabi’s antics and sarcastic comments by now.

“Did you get any napkins from the coffee shop?” She asked. Maybe he could prove useful for something.

While Dabi searched his pockets for napkins, Kio felt a strange feeling. It was as if a pair of eyes were peering at them from somewhere. They turned to their right, looking into a restaurant. Various people sat at tables, minding their business and enjoying their meals. Nothing suspicious. But then she turned to her left, and across the street she caught a glimpse of a figure leaning against a street lamp. They wore seemingly normal clothes, as well as a hat which concealed their eyes from view. Kio knew that this figure wasn’t the average citizen.

After taking the napkins from his pocket, Dabi offered them to her. She stepped towards him to take them, then paused.

“To your right, there’s a hero watching us.” She said quietly, then took the napkins from his hand.

Dabi glanced to his right, spotting the hero. He frowned.

“Probably saw us and wanted to follow us back to the hideout.” Dabi muttered.

Kio’s eyes lit up. She ran her hands over her fingernails, turning them into sharp, gold claws; her signature weapon. She tapped them against the plastic coffee cup that she held.

“That means we’ll have to take care of them.”

By now, the hero had a feeling he had caught the attention of the two villains. So he began to move and possibly find a place to hide out until he could continue his spying.

He looked over his shoulder, across the street, but the pair was gone. He decided to duck into an alleyway to scout out for them. Thoughts raced in his head. Where did they go? Are they after me? They definitely saw me. Did I manage to lose them?

Unfortunately for him, all those questions were just answered.

“Hello there.” A voice spoke from behind him. He froze, and the panic began to set in. Luckily, he had years of hero training to prepare him for situations such as this one. He turned and found himself facing the two villains. He was familiar with them by now as every hero should be. So he knew their quirks and how dangerous they were.

“Don’t move!” The hero ordered, standing in a defensive position.

Of course, Kio didn’t pay any mind to his words. She gently set her cup of coffee on the ground. Then suddenly, she lunged at him, but he managed to dodge and push Kio to the side. Her shoulder made contact with the hard wall of the alleyway. The hero was about to throw a punch at Kio, but was stopped by a wall of blue flames. With one hand holding the tray of coffee, Dabi used his free hand to blast the flames between them.

Once the flames dispersed, Kio instantly attacked the hero, wrapping their hand around his neck and slamming him against the wall. Smiling, they brought their gold claws up to his face as he struggled against their grip. They made sure that the gold dug into his skin.

“Since you weren’t too difficult to deal with, I’ll give you a choice.” Kio whispered to him, as if telling an exciting secret. “Which one of us should kill you?”

Dabi took note of the hero’s horrified expression. These were exactly the kind of heroes that disgusted him. In Dabi’s eyes, they were weak and only cared for the benefits that heroes got.

The hero continued to struggle.

“You villains are crazy.” He said. Kio only continued to smile.

“You’re running out of time to make a choice!” She warned him.

He didn’t make a choice. So Kio decided for him.

“Dabi. Take care of him for me.” She threw the hero to the ground in front of Dabi. The man covered in scars looked down at him pitifully. He activated his quirk, and the hero was engulfed in flames. Soon, he was nothing but ashes which were blown away in the breeze.

Kio watched, amused at the sight. He had always loved the sight of Dabi’s flames. Such a nice, pretty shade of blue they were. They began clapping happily.

“Thanks Dabi! You’ve almost redeemed yourself for spilling coffee on me earlier.” They cheered.

Then they heard a gasp from the end of the alleyway, causing them to turn. On the sidewalk, was a young female hero who stared at them. The poor thing seemed to be paralyzed in fear. Perhaps that was her partner that she had just watched Dabi burn to a crisp. Kio began walking towards her. The hero couldn’t find the strength to move as Kio approached.

They put their hand on the woman’s shoulder, almost in a friendly manner.

“Hi pretty. How much of that did you see?” They asked casually, their cheerful face not faltering.

The hero stuttered for a moment before getting a few words out.

“I-I saw nothing!” She said.

Kio raised her eyebrows at the obvious lie. They leaned in closer.

“You shouldn’t have lied…” Their voice lowered. “I would’ve let you go if you told the truth.”

The woman’s eyes widened.

“T-That’s a lie.” She managed to say. At this, Kio’s smile widened. They began giggling as if they remembered a joke. This was something Kio had done quite often. It was so off putting that even Dabi had needed some time to get used to it. But now he simply stood in the alleyway, his hands in his pockets as he watched.

They leaned in even closer. Their faces were just inches apart.

“Yeah. You’re right. I would’ve killed you anyways.”

Then they roughly forced their hand on the woman’s face so that each finger was touching her. And they activated their quirk.

Gold spread from her fingertips until the woman’s entire face was pure gold. It was frozen in a screaming expression. But it didn’t stop there. The hero’s whole body began turning to gold. She now looked like a statue.

With a shove from Kio, the statue-like woman fell and landed with a thud on the cement. The concrete had cracked from the impact because of the weight of the gold.

Kio could turn her back if she wanted to. Anything that she turns to gold could be turned back by her unless it’s broken. But what was the fun in that? She walked back into the alleyway and picked up her coffee cup from the ground. She took a sip and smiled at Dabi.

“Let’s head back now!” She said, as if they hadn’t just killed 2 people.

“Shigaraki will probably be mad that we’re late.” Dabi muttered.
