Chapter Text

Tap, tap, tap.

The sound interrupted Wanda from her meditation, but she did her best to tune it out.

Tap, tap, tap.

What was that noise, and when would it stop? She gave it a minute or two more, but it continued. Frustrated, she got up to investigate.

It was coming from her window. Peering out into the darkness, she startled, her hex aura glowing, when she caught two yellow eyes, glowing from the tree across from her window. She relaxed slightly, feeling ashamed when she registered the rest of the boy the eyes were attached to. She knew better than to react with fear to a mutant's appearance, and how could she startle at such a beautiful appearance?

Willing her hex aura to extinguish, she took a breath and opened the window. Heat crept up her face as she wondered what he could want with her–surely, he needed something else, another meeting with Agatha Harkness, maybe? Fear pricked her spine when she considered he might be mad at her for something! She had no clue what he could be mad about, but what if ?

Nightcrawler smiled at her, revealing fangs. "Hi. I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Wanda blinked. "No, not at all."

"I wanted to say thank you for your kindness before," he continued, "giving me Mystique's statue and arranging that visit with Agatha Harkness," which had gone terribly , but he appreciated Wanda's effort. "I brought you a gift. Can I come to your window?"

"Of course," she agreed, surprised he was asking. Maybe he'd learned his lesson last time. "You didn't have to get me a gift."

He leaped from the tree to the wall, sticking to the siding. His tail brought a small potted cactus to her window sill. "I didn't know if you were a plant person, but you seemed like a plant person, and it had a flower on it–well, they all had flowers, but I think they're dead, and they might have been hot glued on. I couldn't find one without a glued-on flower."

Wanda's eyes widened at the small round cactus, fuzzy with prickles and adorned with a red flower and wispy threads of dried plastic. " Oh ," she said, taking the pot. "It's beautiful. You didn't have to–"

He was grinning now, and she noticed his eyes seemed to shine brighter. "No, but I wanted to. Thank you again."

He'd gotten her a plant. She couldn't believe it; Nightcrawler had gotten her a plant. "Thank you . I was just…it was nothing. She's your mother." She had just been showing basic kindness. He deserved to have his mother. She wouldn’t wish the loss of a mother on anyone.

"It wasn't nothing," Kurt insisted. It hadn't been nothing to him. "So, you like it?"

Wanda managed to beam, even with her reserved smile, and nodded. "Yes. Thank you." How had he known she loved plants?

He grinned again, and she felt weak in the knees. He kept grinning at her!

"Good. Well…I had another thing I wanted to ask you," he began, tail flicking with nerves.

She blinked, attentive, nervous even if she didn't know why.

"So, I was wondering…do you like German food?"

She blinked again, surprised. Where had that come from? "I…suppose. I've never really had it, I don't think."

"Would you want to go to dinner with me sometime?" He asked. "It doesn't have to be German food. I just know this great restaurant in the city, and I thought it might be nice to go, but we can go anywhere you'd like."

Now she was shocked. Was he asking her out? Surely, not! He couldn't possibly be interested in her–he was an X-Man, and he was so beautiful! She was far too plain, far too dangerous . He must just want to show his gratitude, buy her a thank-you meal. "Okay," she said, unable to turn him down, even if it was just for a thank-you meal.

His grin returned. "Great. It's a date."

She blushed scarlet, thinking she ought to pinch herself, because this couldn ' t be real.

"How about Friday? I'll pick you up around six?" He offered.

Wanda nodded, speechless. A date ! Nightcrawler had asked her out on a date ! What would she wear?

" Wundervoll . I’ll see you then,” he winked, and Wanda thought her knees might give out.

He gave a wave and disappeared into his signature cloud of burning sulfur.

Wanda stood there, stunned. Had this really just happened? Nightcrawler , who was without a doubt, the most beautiful person she’d ever seen, had just come to her window, given her a cactus, and asked her out? Eventually, she came out of her stupor, realizing she needed to find a place for her little cactus.

She busied herself, arranging her plants just so, making sure the cactus would get plenty of natural light, while her thoughts drifted to Friday. It was only days way! Goodness gracious, what should she wear?
