I’ve made it a habit over the years to pressure people into adopting dogs or cats that they hit on the road, because it’s their fault that the animal got hit. I think they should have to take on responsibility for animals if they hit them. AITA?

Hello, AITA. I’m (38F) a veterinarian. I have been practicing for about 10 years. There have been a few occasions in the past where people have brought animals into my clinic that they hit on the road in their cars. In fact, one of these people was a guy who I ended up dating pretty seriously for a while. I’ve made it a habit over the years to pressure people into adopting dogs or cats that they hit on the road, because it’s their fault that the animal got hit. I think they should have to take on responsibility for animals if they hit them. Not just paying for vet bills but actually taking them in/adopting them. However, my husband, Don, recently found out that I have tried to guilt multiple people into adopting dogs that they brought into my clinic, and he was shocked and said I’m an asshole. AITA?

A vet should know better. OP you have NO IDEA who is hitting these animals in their cars, whether they actually have the time or money to care for the animal, or the inclination. You’re creating a breeding ground for animal abuse and neglect. You’ve probably sentenced several dogs to a slow death by starvation or a life all alone in an empty house.

Not always??? Sometimes animals run under the wheels of cars. That isn’t anyone’s fault. It almost sounds like you’re trying to “punish” them with dog adoption. You have issues, lady.

It doesn’t sound like you take these animals' lives seriously at all. If you're just demanding random people you don’t know anything about adopt them, you clearly don’t give a damn and are just performing indignation. You think these animals being hit could only ever be the driver’s fault, which means you think the drivers are predisposed to be distracted and careless, and now you want to give them animals to take care of?

You clearly lead a very privileged life if you think people can just adopt dogs and take adequate care of them. YTA both to the dogs and the people you are trying to guilt into adopting them who may not be able to afford to give them the care that they need.
