Jin was interested in catching animals, even though Horobi told him not to. He never hurt the animals, he simply caught them, petted them for a bit, and then released them. The animals were often nervous, but were never injured and were pretty comfortable socializing.
One day, he was walking to the cage to see if any animals had been caught when he saw Naki walking to the same location carrying a small bunny.
They paused, and the humagears stopped to look at each other.
Naki continued to the cage, putting the bunny in carefully, not saying anything.
"Where did you find that bunny?" Jin asked.
"There’s an animal shelter nearby," Naki said as if that explained everything.
"So you stole the bunny from the animal shelter?"
"No. I mean. Fuwa and I have been. Fostering. Animals. From the animal shelter." Naki spoke very robotically, partly because they were a humagear but mainly because they were making things up as they went along. "With permission. And then we return. The animal. To the shelter."
"You can stop talking now."
Naki stopped. Jin picked up the bunny.
"What’s their name?" Jin asked.
"Thumper. After the character in the 1942 Disney movie Bambi."
"Nice," Jin said, petting the bunny. "Do you want to pet Thumper too?"
Naki was slightly awkward, but they listened to Jin and pet the bunny for a little while.
They would definitely return the not-stolen bunny to the shelter once they finished petting it. Just five more minutes…
