Ash can you please describe the styles
ash @pikashu · Apr 3

sure! so kantos like. stiff. very traditional. unfortunately i am not a good kanto style trainer so please dont look at me for a visual explanation. go look at literally any gym leader blue battle for kanto style (even though hes a bit off)
ash @pikashu · Apr 3

johto is also kinda traditional but johto trainers like to do a lot of Spins on the traditions. its way less stiff, opposite of kanto (as johto often is). if you’ve ever seen gym leader yanagi battle hes a good example and a good battler

hoenn is very influenced by contests, which is why its the first Off one. its not really similar to anything its just. Hoenn. generally champions daigo and mikuri are good examples of a traditional and contest influenced hoenn battlers respectively

sinnoh is the Most Traditional because its the closest to the origins of battling. like, you want to learn about the beginnings of pokemon and battles? go to sinnoh. a good battle with elite four kikuno will show you better than i can explain

unova is unova. big on expression. the one place where battles with 2/more trainers/pokemon on each side of the field are popular. very fun though! hard to describe because it varies so much. wish i had more time to train in double/tag battles

kalos is the closest to hoenn. much more free than anything else. quite flowy, also influenced (by showcases as well as contests). very kalos

what ive learned about alolan style is that its very spiritual. focused on why to battle and the ceremonial stuff before and after the battles rather than only on the battle. its kinda similar to sinnoh in that. its also very free. i like that

from what ive seen (which isnt much) galarians like to make a Show out of battles. like, their league is invite only!! and paldeans (which i’ve seen even less of) have a thing that lets them change a pokemons type mid battle which is !!! i wanna see it one day
Kiawe @kakiprivate · Apr 3

So, how'd you describe your style then?
ash @pikashu · Apr 3

a mix of all the ones i described until alola, considering ive been to seven regions by now. still kind of a kanto trainer, just a Very influenced one, mostly by johto and sinnoh, considering im partially johtonese and sinnoh was Big for me
“For those who don’t know, the Pokemon World Tournament is a battle festival that happens once every two years.” Professor Kukui started explaining after they all sat down and the lesson started. Ash raised his head. “This time, in less than a month’s time, Alola has the chance to organize it. Now, can someone tell me what makes the Tournament special? And why it may be weird that Alola’s organizing it?”
Lillie put her hand up. Professor Kukui nodded at her. “In contrary to the majority of other battle festivals, only those who are League Associates can be chosen to compete.”
“Exactly, Lillie!” Kukui laughed. “Now, for my second question? Anyone?”
“Alola doesn’t have a League,” Kiawe hummed. “There are no Associates here. So if it’s happening in Alola, who is going to be chosen to compete from here, and how?”
Ash raised his hand, albeit slowly. He remembered Shirona talking about it, during one of the first times they'd met in Sinnoh. When he told her his name and she recognized him as Kaede's little brother and started talking about a Tournament that happened a few years back (eight years ago, he counted in his mind, very early in the year, when he was still eight himself and Red and Leaf were thirteen, too, and they barely knew Silver) in Unova, and how his oldest brother was chosen as one of the contestants. That it was the last time she saw Red before his disappearance. Ash didn’t really care about it then — in Sinnoh there were more pressing matters on his mind, other stuff to take care of. Besides, that Tournament happened before he even was a trainer, and to add to that, Sinnoh was a time when he didn’t like to hear or talk about his brother; not even from the people that knew him.
Professor nodded at him, and Ash organized his thoughts quickly, browsing through the memories coming back to his mind. “It’s usually the Chairmen who choose the participants, right?” he started carefully, furrowing his eyebrows. “Because the champions can also be chosen.”
“Yes, Ash.” Kukui nodded and started writing on the blackboard. KT, JH, HN, SN, UV, KL, AO, GL, PD. Shortened names of the most commonly competing regions, and under them a few numbers. “In some regions, like Galar or Unova,” he circled them as they were mentioned, “there are tournaments beforehand, to create a smaller group of people to choose from. Alolan representatives this year will be chosen by the Kahunas, from all trainers registered in the region that have started the Island Challenge. There aren't a lot of them, and the Kahunas already said there’ll only be five trainers chosen at the most, because it’s the first time we’re joining.”
“So what about the future?” Kiawe asked, leaning slightly forward. “Because that doesn’t sound like the best way of choosing long-term.”
Professor Kukui’s eyes shined and he grinned. “It will change. Because a month after the Tournament ends, Alola will be having its first Pokemon League and after that, there’ll be League Associates here to choose from.”

”The lists are out!” The professor shouted, walking into the class, waking Ash up suddenly. He looked around with still half asleep eyes. Grinning, Kukui took a piece of chalk and wrote AO on the blackboard. “The World Tournament lists are out! Because of that, we will be focusing on them today instead of our normal lessons. I’ll be reading names, region by region, and you’ll be giving me one fact you know about the trainer. If you don’t know any, don’t worry, I’ll say something. We’ll start with Alola, and then we’ll see.”
Sophocles raised his hand.
”Yes, Sophocles?”
”Does the order of the trainers on the list matter?”
”No, it’s randomized.” Kukui clicked something on the laptop on his desk, still standing. “Although there have been controversies about favoritism, by now it’s gotten as neutral as it can be. Some years a region sends stronger trainers, some years there’s not a single Elite Four or Champion, but there’s not a big group of people to choose from, considering it’s only Associates.” He stopped for a second. “Also, usually trainers don’t know that they’re picked. The lists are released first and any alterations are done later, to keep it an element of surprise, since any Associate can be chosen, unless they tell their region’s Chairman beforehand that they don’t wish to compete, like Kanto Elite Four Agatha did last time. From what I know, this year only Alola informed trainers beforehand.”
For maybe a minute there was silence, as the professor searched for the lists and Ash allowed himself to think.
If he was chosen, it would have to be by Kanto’s Chairman. Kanto had a bunch of Associates, at least compared to other regions, so the chance was low. Not impossible, considering the last few times the Tournament happened he already was an Associate and wasn’t chosen, so that automatically put him higher, but decently low. The fact that he had an actual address he stayed at and was in the region that hosted it certainly raised Ash’s chances, but between the Gym Leaders, Elite Four (both current and former), League winners that didn’t become champions and literally everyone else, Kanto’s usual 10 spots were probably already taken by others. Better trainers. Hopefully people he knew.
Pikachu put a paw on his hand, as if feeling his slight distress. Ash smiled weakly at him.
”There are four trainers for Alola. Molayne, Gladion, Kiawe and me,” Kukui finished, only the slightest hint of surprise in his voice. Smiling, he looked at the fire type trainer. “Congratulations, Kiawe!”
Ash congratulated him and the professor as well; and the rest of the class followed suit. Kiawe seemed a little bit embarrassed, but took it with a smile on his face.
”Wait, my brother was chosen?” Lillie asked, voice a little bit higher than usual. “I will need to find him later,” she murmured under her breath, in a slightly ominous way. Sophocles made a similar comment about Molayne.
Professor Kukui asked Lana to choose a region to go over next and she chose Hoenn, which wasn't surprising at all. Ash completely focused on the names of the chosen Hoennians instead of on his classmates. He could feel Pikachu’s weight on his arms, and his mind was in battle mode. Daigo and Mikuri were in; Jindai and Datsura as well. That was already incredibly hard competition, clearly, Hoenn's Chairman was determined for the region to get a win, and if — and that’s a gigantic if — Ash got in, just the Hoennians were trouble. Next was Sinnoh, and there was Shirona and Dahlia, and Goyou. All incredibly strong trainers, against the majority of which he never even battled! The battles that it could lead to... his brain was already analyzing possible ones and how they could look. There were some Gym Leaders, too; Galar sent a bunch, but Galarian Gym Leaders have always been a strong group. There were also three Challengers though, so that was new.
”...Galarian League is based on an endorsement system. To even get in, someone who’s already in has to give you a letter of endorsement. That’s why everyone who challenges it, is a Challenger, is considered an Associate of the Galarian League,” Kukui explained to someone. “It's been a controversial system for years and we'll have a lesson on it soon. Anyway, Ash? Which region should we go over next?”
”Pikapi.” Pikachu jabbed him with his tail. He blinked a couple of times and looked at the professor.
Johto was tempting. But if he was chosen, it would be for Kanto.
”Kanto,” he answered after a couple of seconds. “I’m curious if some of my friends or family got in,” he laughed, scratching the back of his neck.
”Kanto it is, then!”
Ash looked at the blackboard. AO, HN, SN, JH, GL and UV were already on it, with the trainer names below them. Good that he didn’t choose Johto, then. Cilan’s name was below the last one, among nine other names. Professor Kukui was writing KT, right next to the UV.
In Johto’s row, however, there were Hibiki, Wataru and Silver. Ash blinked. That was already a good chunk of his family right there; and that meant that they'd be coming to Alola. He wasn't really sure how he felt about that.
”First off, we have Lt. Surge. Vermillion City Gym Leader. Anyone’s got anything?”
”He’s Unovan,” Sophocles said. “He moved to Kanto a couple of decades ago.”
”That's true! He's also one of the longest standing Kanto Leaders. Okay, up next… Gary Oak! A Pokemon Researcher.” He wrote Shigeru’s name on the blackboard and Ash perked up. He hasn't seen him in a while; they would have to meet up at some point.
”He’s the lead researcher on Pokemon fossils, which is more impressive considering the fact that he’s our age,” Lillie said. She looked at Ash from the corner of her eye. “He’s from Pallet Town, too, like Ash.”
”Ash, do you know Gary Oak?” Soph asked. He blinked slowly. Does he know Gary Oak? Pikachu snorted.
”Yeah! Me an' Shigeru go way back, he’s my oldest rival! We basically grew up together.” Pikachu started saying something after him. “Our houses are kinda essentially next to each other, and our families are friends, so, yeah. Professor, who’s next?” He looked expectantly, waiting. The professor looked at the list and back up at him.
”It’s you, Ash,” he said and Ash froze. “Congratulations! I didn’t know you were a League Associate.” Kukui grinned and he couldn’t help but smile as well.
He was in. And while he wasn't exactly expecting it — and a part of him was the tiniest bit torn — it probably would not be too bad to compete.
”I don’t really go around talking much about it, but I won the Orange League, years ago,” he laughed nervously. How long ago was it by now — six years, maybe? “It's– Kanto an' Johto laws are complicated, and the Orange League ones are, too, but being a Champion of it makes you a secondary Champion under Kanto, which makes me an Indigo League Associate.”
The class became silent.

Silver was annoying him greatly through messages, talking about how he and Gold would come to Alola next week — earlier than anyone else besides maybe Red and Blue, but those two were always unpredictable at best and annoying at worst, so it was a fifty fifty on when they'd appear. Still, Ash and Silver would have to have a battle, that much was true; he hasn’t battled anyone in the family in a forever.
Especially Silver.
Ash first met his half-brother a few years after Red became Kanto Champion, when he himself was eight. Kaede brought him, dirty and tired and angry at the entire world in his 10 year old glory and Mama immediately readied the adoption papers and an angry call to their father (he heard it, when it happened; and while he was sad then, nowadays every time he remembered that call he admired his Mama beyond any words, for how well she dealt with Sakaki).
And that’s how Silver became a Ketchum.
”Ash, I know that you do know Kalosian well already, but I’d appreciate it still if you weren’t on your phone,” Kukui sighed, but he didn’t seem angry. Ash jumped up a bit and smiled nervously.
”Sorry, professor, ‘s not gonna happen again.”
”Liar, liar,” Lana whispered in a sing-along voice.
Thankfully, the class ended maybe ten minutes after that, and Ash almost ran outside with his classmates. He promised to help Kiawe today, just like the last few days. The fire type trainer has upped his training (both battles and battle research) to a maximum after he learned that he’d be representing Alola in two weeks’ time.
And after learning that Ash has spent a good chunk of his journeys battling and meeting the majority of the trainers that would be competing as well, that training included Ash. There was no way he'd complain, though — battling and talking about battling and everything related to the topic was where Ash always felt the best at, speaking out loud only helped him organize his thoughts better, so it was just as much training for Kiawe as it was for him.
”I battled four of the Kalosians,” he said after they both sat down in Aina's Restaurant, a notebook between them two and the rest of their classmates around them. He wrote down the six names — Korrina, Olympia, Wulfric, Dana, Malva and Alain (Ash had to search on the Internet what their Galarian names were. He never had to use them before, only ever using the Kalosian ones). They went over the Unovans yesterday and the Galarians the day before that.
”Which ones?” Kiawe asked and he pointed to the first three names.
”Won against those three.” He circled their names and underlined Alain’s in a zig-zag pattern. “Lost against Alain. And I fought alongside Malva. Never met Dana, but I've heard of her.”
It’s been almost a year since he left Kalos. The anniversary was nearing and nearly every single thought about it made Ash's chest squeeze and head hurt.
”Corné– Korrina is very… what’s the word,” Ash huffed as he closed his eyes. “She’s… attaque, attaque… kanojo wa kōgeki… Oh! She’s more focused on the offense rather than defense. Her partner is a Lucario after all an' she is a fighting type trainer. She prefers to finish the battle quickly with a few powerful attacks. With her the strategy would be to either do the same to her, or to try and tire out her pokemon. Depends on who you have and who you’ll use.”
He continued on and on like that for the next few hours. How Astera liked to change up the battle and its field, how Urup liked brute force in his battles. He had to search a bit about Dana, as he never met her, but he’s heard a bit from Cornélia and Lem.
Ash pretended that his voice didn’t break or crack a few times when he was talking about Alain and Malva. A breath in. A breath out. He continued and talked and talked and talked, until the sun was maybe an hour and a half from dipping below the horizon. Despite not taking part, his classmates took every word he said in, asking a few questions here and there.
He waved Mallow goodbye and looked for a few seconds after Kiawe’s Charizard as it became smaller and smaller in the evening sky. Urging Pikachu to jump on his shoulder (talking about Kalos, even if it wasn’t about it was exhausting and anxiety inducing and– he just needed the familiar, comfortable weight on his shoulder and they both knew it) Ash started walking towards the professor’s house.
”Pikapi,” Pikachu murmured as he started making biscuits into his shirt. “Kapipi. Pi-pikachu-pi. Chupika, pi.”
He was saying something about Red and Silver, but Ash was too tired to understand what exactly. He kept going on and on, and he couldn’t stop a small smile from appearing on his face. Before he noticed, they were already at the house, and with a quick ’I’m home!’ he walked in.
Ash stopped in his tracks as he saw that both Silver and Red were sitting on the couch, right next to professor Kukui.
