The Crystal Bearers

Summary:

"Techno! You didn’t have to move all of those by yourself!” Dream spoke in his usual animated way, with his smiley mask hiding the majority of his face, it made sense. But it made Techno uncomfortable.

“Fucking hell man, we were coming down to help but you finished it. How strong are you?” Sapnap always had a way with words, so to speak. His bandana sitting where it always did on the top of his head.

“I don’t think we would be much help, to be honest. Given he’s the strength of this place.” George spoke, almost like he was bored, he always managed to sound bored. His sunglasses sitting low on his nose as he looked at Techno.

“Well, it had to be done, and no one else was here.” Techno shrugged, turning to the crates, “This delivery is smaller than the others have been. Which means that the source is most likely running low, or they’re pocketing some.” He looks at the trio, his red eyes piercing into each of them. He always hated how he looked, his larger-than-average build made him intimidating, his red eyes even more so. So, Techno, from a young age, grew out his hair and dyed it pink. He took care of it too, so it was always braided and soft to the touch. Not that he let anyone touch it.

Chapter Text

He wiped the sweat from his brow, looking over the stock. It was a decent haul, the crystals were in good enough condition for use, hell he even tested a few. He sighed heavily as he packed the test crystal he had used back into its slot. He was strong, sure, but maybe moving 20 crates full of power crystals was too much for him to handle.

Take care of yourself!!

You’ll die!!

No, he won’t! He never dies!

The voices ring in his ears, a side effect of overusing the crystals. He doesn’t mind though, if anything their words keep him sane. They warn him of the impending headache that comes with using the crystals, among other things. He looks up as footsteps approach him, internally groaning as he sees the head of the settlement and his friends.

I don’t like these three.

Shhhh we need to let him focus!

What? Why?

It takes a lot of his focus not to punch those three.

Ooohh I see. They do have very punchable faces.

“We may have to scout the route that they take to see what’s going on. How many crates are missing?” Dream always got straight to the point, the one thing Techno liked about his childhood friend. Well, not friend, more like rival.

“I don’t know. Last delivery there was at least 40 crates, but this time there are around 20 crates.” Techno sighed and leaned against the stacked crates, crossing his arms and frowning. To the others, he must look angry, or at least a little frustrated, when in actuality he’s just tired, and confused as to what happened to the missing crates. “I will say that the quality of the crystals is better than the last few batches, so that might be why there’s less.”

Dream nodded, and looked at Sapnap, silently conveying his thoughts. Sapnap nodded and dashed off to do something, possibly to send scouts to check the trail, who knows, Techno doesn’t. George stepped towards one of the crates and opened it, picking up a light pink crystal. He smiled slightly, creepily, making Techno want to move away from the other. He didn’t, he has a reputation after all.

“Techno is right. These are better.” George spoke in a strange tone, clearly losing himself to the crystal. Techno reached over and took it from him, placing it back into the crate. “Hey! I was-”

“You would have fused with it if I didn’t take it from you.” He spoke in a calm tone, but George backed up immediately. Always works when he uses, what the newbies call, ‘parent voice’. Dream chuckles as George practically hides behind him, clearly unsettled by Techno doing what he did. Serves him right for wanting to risk losing himself to power.

“George and I can handle things from here, you go get some rest, Techno.” Dream spoke in an almost dry tone. He was mad at Techno. Maybe for taking power away from George like he did, maybe for touching George, who knows. Not Techno. He watches the pair move further down the line of crates, both talking in a hushed tone. Techno takes this as his cue to leave, so he does.

He walks through the halls of the large building he calls home, nodding to anyone he passes. Some faces he knows, some he doesn’t, they give avoid him either way. He doesn’t know anyone here, no one wants to talk to him, other than the ‘Dream Team’ as people call them. Stupid name, in Techno’s opinion.

I think Dream Team rolls off the tongue.

Yeah, but it has a pretty big bias towards Dream.

Well the three of them together are pretty powerful.

You say that as if they fight anything ever.

True, they send Technoblade in to fight for them.

Lazy fucks. Fuck the dream team!

… what-

NOT LIKE THAT-

The voices fight amongst themselves about the name of the top three at the settlement. Techno is able to block them out for the most part, only getting a couple of words every so often… not that is makes it any better. He was the second in command, but that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. He has no say in any of the decisions, he just does what he’s told. That’s how things have always been done.

“Yo! Techno!” Sapnap jobs up behind him, smiling. Great, he wants something from Techno. He turns and practically scowls at Sapnap, Techno notes the deep red crystal embedded into his bandana. Meaning he expects a fight, even better. Sapnap stops in front of Techno and has the audacity to look guilty.

“You want me to join the scouting mission ‘just in case’ don’t you?” Techno sighs as Sapnap nods. “Let me get my gear on, I’ll go ahead of the rest of you. You’ll know if there’s danger.” with that, he walked the rest of the way to his room to get ready for the coming scouting mission. He fully expected Sapnap to follow him, but he didn’t. For someone who holds a fire crystal, he wasn’t as energetic as the other fire wielders Techno had met. Then again, all of those had been on the battlefield.

He made sure to lock the door to his room and prepare for the oncoming mission. He grabbed his crown, placing it on his head, making sure it won’t fall off. The crystals immediately resonate with him. He had one from each category but made sure to not use more than one at a time. His most powerful crystal was embedded into the hilt of his sword, a black crystal. He picks up his sword, cape and boar skull mask.

“I don’t want to do this.” He speaks to no one in particular, not even the voices respond to his words. They’re strangely quiet. He sighs and puts on his cape, then his mask, and ties his sword to his waist. “But I don’t have a choice.” With that, he exits his room and makes his way to where the crates are held once again, but this time he ignores Dream and George, not that they say anything to him as he leaves.

The Blood God has made his return!

He never left

The outfit makes him the blood god

Does it??

Guys I don’t think he can hear us

Oh no-

That can’t be good

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!

Chapter Text

Techno stalked the trading route, at this point it was close to the middle of the night and there had been no sign of a struggle. Still, he was cautious, keeping a hand on the hilt of his sword, just in case he came across someone. His hand brushed over the black crystal, making his skin prickle with anticipation for a fight.

“There’s nothing here.” He sighed, shaking his head, but he kept going. Making sure to stay hidden from view just in case. He freezes when he hears footsteps, ones he doesn’t recognize. He crouches behind some rubble nearby and waits.

“Are you sure this is the route?” one voice, a female, spoke softly. She sounds kind, the type that doesn’t want to fight. Maybe Techno- no. He can’t risk it. He doesn’t want to cause trouble, just to finish this stupid mission.

“Yes! How many times do I have to tell you this is the route. I saw the logo for that fucking shit hole.” Another voice spoke, a deeper voice, a male then. Techno heard them stop near where he was hiding. He held his breath as the pair continue to speak quietly.

“I do see tracks… but they’re old, and not from anything that you described.” The woman spoke, almost accusing her friend of lying. Techno heard a disgruntled sound from the man. Seems as though the pair behind him were close.

“Niki you know I wouldn’t joke about this sort of thing! The Crystal fucks did come through here! I swear on Philza’s life.” The man defended himself to Niki, it seemed her name was. This Philza he mentioned sounds familiar to Techno somehow.

“Do not say that sort of thing Jack. You’ll jinx it. I believe you, but we can’t stay here. Who knows who, or what we’ll run into.” Niki spoke in a softer tone, clearly trying to calm Jack down.

“Right yeah. We should report back. I do not want to deal with the beast the Crystal fuckers have in their basement.” Jack spoke as the pair walked in the direction they came from. Techno frowned at his words though, what beast? Surely not himself. He knew others feared him, but did other settlements really see him as a beast? He didn’t have time to think about it, Sapnap and the others on the scouting crew would catch up to him soon, and Techno didn’t feel like dealing with interacting with them… So, he did the only logical thing he could think of and followed Jack and Niki.

Techno made sure to stay a fair distance away, he didn’t know what the pair could do, if they had Crystals or not. Better to just follow them until he can’t anymore, and make a plan from there. He made sure to stay hidden, and keep his eyes on them.

Don’t ask.

… okay… but yeah, they did.

Techno frowns at the voices, wondering why they were so excited over this Philza. He notices the pair he’s following turn a corner and disappear. He speeds up, and looks at where they turned. He frowns again, there isn’t a path there. Just a rock face covered in vines. He reaches towards the vines, pressing his hand against them. He expects to feel the jagged cliff face, but instead… his hand goes through the vines.

He hears voices coming from the vines, or maybe the tunnel that are behind them. He sighs, looks around, not seeing anyone, and pushes his way through. He’s greeted with relative darkness, the crystals on his crown and his sword glowing dimly. Ahead of him, he can see two figures walking with what looks to be a flame torch, their foot steps and hushed voices echoing down the tunnel towards him. He knows he shouldn’t follow them, but he does anyway. He has a lead on who has been stealing the crates. Maybe. He hasn’t decided yet.

He makes sure to stay in step with the pair, and keep his steps light, considering he can hear their steps, it’s likely they could hear his… if he wasn’t careful. Techno was always careful, even despite his large build, he was able to stay hidden, and practically silent. He saw the figures disappear at the end of the tunnel, but he could still hear them talking. There were more voices this time, and laughter. Bright, genuine laughter. Techno wanted to reveal himself in that moment. Wanted to escape from being forced to fight for people he no longer cared for. He wanted nothing more than to step into the light for once, reveal himself and prove to people that he was good. But he didn’t. He couldn’t. If he did, he couldn’t be sure if the people on the other side of the tunnel would accept him, if they wouldn’t try to kill him on sight. Not while he’s wearing his ‘Blood God’ gear. He was a monster in their eyes, in everyone’s eyes.

So he turned around and walked out of the tunnel, ignoring the feeling of being watched. Ignoring his instincts telling him to turn around. For him to take a chance for once, to just get away. He walked back along the trail, just as the sun rose, did he come across the rest of the scouts.

“So? Did you find anything Blood God?” Sapnap looked at him, hopeful, his face falling when Techno shook his head. He was glad his boar skull mask hid his face, because Sapnap would have seen his grimace at the nickname. He hated it. He hated how everyone only saw him as a weapon. He was just as human as everyone else in this god forsaken place, yet because of his strength and overall build he was treated like a wild animal.

“Nothing of note. No human foot prints. I can stay out and search for anything else while you go back to base and make the report.” Techno spoke in a monotone voice, having not slept in well over a day is starting to take it’s toll on him. He wouldn’t show it, or ever admit it to anyone, but he’s exhausted.

“You don’t have to, Dream wouldn’t care if you came back. I know for a fact you haven’t slept and you definitely deserve at least some sleep.” Sapnap somehow picked up on Techno’s exhaustion. Damn him and his observant ways. Techno never really understood Sapnap, he wasn’t like the others. The fire crystal holder seemed to actually care about Techno, unlike Dream or George. Dream saw Techno as a weapon to be used as he pleases and George… was just scared.

“I want to check further a long the path. I only turned back because the sun was rising.” Techno turned back around, a plan in his mind. “Tell Dream that if I’m not back in 3 days assume I’ve been killed.” He didn’t give Sapnap a chance to respond, as he started walking back towards the tunnel. His cape flowing behind him, sword and crown feeling heavier than they usually did. It was time for him to find out why people hated the settlement he belonged to, The Crystal Bearers. It was time to break free of the clutches of Dream, it was time for Techno to escape.

He got to the vines, and did the same as before, but without worrying about being seen. The whole idea of this was to get caught, hopefully he wouldn’t have to fight anyone. Lost in his own thoughts, he didn’t see the figure before him. He froze when he heard the figure speak.

“Hey mate. Thought you might come back.” The figure spoke in an almost joyful tone, he didn’t have any crystals on him, if he did they would be glowing. He also didn’t appear to have any weapons, none that Techno could see. “name’s Phil, though people call be Philza a lot of the time.”

Notes:

Three character intros in one chapter??? Phil was honestly a surprise! I planned Niki and Jack before hand and had an idea of what I wanted to happen with them... and then the end of the chapter came and I was stumped as to what to do! But then I big brained and thought "why not phil? Techno was already being watched when he left the first time, why wouldn't someone confront him if he came back?"

I love when I foreshadow things before I know it's foreshadowing. Anyways! hope you enjoyed this one! let me know your thoughts in the comments if you want to. I wanna see what people think is going to happen. But yeah! see you in the next one :D

(also the misspelling that the voices make is my actual spelling mistakes. I make... so many... so I can let loose with those guys!)

Chapter 3

Notes:

This is the longest chapter so far, I didn't think this would happen so soon not gonna lie! It's a lot of dialogue, with world-building in between so that might be why it's so long? But who knows. The chapters will fluctuate in length as this fic continues, just letting you know now.

I also came up with an evil evil idea earlier today and typed it out in a sticky note on my laptop for later. It's rough around the edges and will be edited heavily, but the basis is there.

anyways! enough about plans for the future, enjoy the chapter :D

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Techno winced slightly at how loud the voices were getting, how excited they were to know that Phil was there. Techno made sure to be on guard, he had no idea what the other man was capable of, so it was best to be safe. Phil stood still, not making any movements, seemingly aware of how on edge Techno was.

“You saw me when I was here before, why didn’t you confront me then? Why only now?” Techno tried to keep his confusion out of his voice, truly, he did. But he clearly failed as Phil chuckled lightly, making Techno frown behind his mask.

“Niki and Jack didn’t know you followed them here. Who was I to ruin their mood and make them feel guilty? You also didn’t attack them, or reveal yourself. You didn’t seem like an immediate threat.” Phil shrugged, Techno was able to make out that the man was smiling as the rising sun caused light to trickle into the cave. Techno took note of the shorter man, his blonde hair, the green and white striped hat he had on. Phil looked kind, he had smile lines around his eyes, and laughter in his eyes. Techno was confused by this man, who seemed to be able to read him like an open book, when neither of them knew who the other was.

“You might be too trusting there… Phil.” Techno tried to laugh a little, loosen his own tension, but it came out as an awkward chuckle. Damn his anxiety, damn his introverted self. “Do you know who I am? What I am?” Techno wanted, no he needed to know if Phil knew who he was talking to. All Phil did was laugh, bright, and genuine, maybe it was more of a cackle than a laugh.

“Mate, I am known as the Angel of Death amongst the people, I think I would know when I’m talking to the man they call ‘Blood God’.” Phil still smiled, but it was more sympathetic, as though he understood what Techno had gone through. As though Phil himself had been through it. “I’m sure you have a lot of questions, and this tunnel is probably not the best place to talk. Follow me.” Phil turned around and just started walking away from Techno, clearly expecting the taller to follow… which he does. He’s curious and wants to know what Phil thinks is going to happen.

When the pair exit the tunnel, Techno is forced to blink a couple of times to adjust to the sudden light change. He looks around and sees a lot of trees, and general plant life in the alcove. The people also looked happy, much happier than where Techno was from. None of them looked scared, or even worried as he and Phil walked by, many greeted the pair with bright smiles and a wave. It was strange, despite being in his ‘Blood God’ gear, people weren’t phased by Techno’s towering stature and intimidating aura. It was refreshing to him, to be seen as a person and not a monster, even if the people were faking it for Phil’s sake. Maybe that was the case, they were just being polite and were secretly terrified of Techno.

Phil stopped outside a cottage, it was quaint, cute almost. It strangely suited the shorter man, the size, along with the small decorations on the exterior seemed to just make sense. There was a bird wind chime, even if there was barely a breeze to make it sing, it added to the homey feel of the cottage. Phil opened the door and motioned for Techno to enter before him. Techno did have to duck under the door frame, but he was used to that. The inside of the cottage seemed to match the outside, feeling homey, with plants and various bird decorations covering each available surface. Most of the furniture seemed to be handmade, or refurbished to suit Phil’s aesthetic.

“You’re free to make yourself at home, mate. I’ll make some tea in the meantime.” Phil smiled at Techno, he seemed to do that a lot. Techno just nodded and sat on one of the single seats, rather awkwardly. He was too tall for it and was probably a sight to look at, but he had to admit the chair was comfortable. He debated taking his crown and mask off, but leaving his cape on, but decided against it. He didn’t know if he would return, or even stay for long. He did tell Sapnap three days, so that’s how long he would possibly stay.

Techno didn’t notice Phil coming back with a tray of light snacks and two cups of rose black tea until the other had placed the tray on the small coffee table that sat in the middle of the seating area. Techno threw a hasty thanks and picked up his cup, moving his mask just enough so he could take a sip and when he did, he practically melted into the seat.

“Is it that good?” Phil raised an eyebrow at Techno, his hat sitting on the arm of the chair he’s sat on, taking a bite of a cookie of some kind. Techno just nodded, taking another sip of the tea.

“It’s better than what I’ve had in a long time. Where did you get it from? I thought all the resources were gone from the city?” Techno tilted his head, he was genuinely wanting to know. He was somewhat of a tea cognisor, well before society decided to collapse.

“I make it myself, with help of course, but everything is grown here and curated here.” Phil takes a sip of his tea and looks at Techno. He looks puzzled, and tilts his head, reminding Techno of a bird. “I still don’t know your name. You’re also safe to remove your mask mate, I won’t hurt you.” Phil smiles at Techno, welcoming him to let his guard down. Techno just sighed and put his teacup down.

“You’ll have to teach me how to make my own tea. The tea they serve… well you know where, is bland.” Techno reaches up to his mask as he speaks, feeling his heart beat faster, his instincts are telling him he’s making a mistake, that he shouldn’t reveal himself to a possible enemy. But Phil hasn’t done anything to be an enemy, so, Techno takes his mask off and rests it on his lap. He avoids Phil’s eyes, not used to trusting people this easily, but Phil hasn’t done anything that would pose a threat to Techno. “They call me Technoblade, or just... Techno when I’m not working.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Techno.” Phil smiles brightly, clearly happy with himself that he was able to get Techno to remove his mask. “Now, I want to know why you followed Niki and Jack, and why you came back.” Phil sips his tea again, looking over the cup at Techno, who fully expected this question.

“I was on a scouting mission. Some of the crates that hold the power crystals were missing so I was… asked to scout the trail. If anything, Niki and Jack ran into me, they seemed to be looking for the truck that was transporting the delivery.” Techno spoke in his monotone voice, getting straight to the point. No point in lying if he expected Phil to tell the truth, this was a transaction of information after all. “I came back to warn you that you’re most likely going to get found if you’re not more careful.” Phil nodded, thinking about Techno’s words, taking them to heart.

“I’ll make sure to tell anyone who leaves regularly to make sure they’re not being followed. Niki and Jack are usually pretty good at keeping an eye out for things… but it’s been quiet recently. Knock on wood.” Phil knocked on the coffee table, chuckling quietly to himself at the saying. He leaned back into the chair and looked at Techno, “Your turn to ask me a question mate.”

“What is this place? How did you all come together like this? I assume you’re the sort of head of it since I heard Jack and Niki mention you.” Techno leaned forward, gazing over the light snacks that Phil had chosen. He chose a rice cake to have while Phil answered his questions.

“This organisation is known as The Syndicate. I lost count of how many people are here, but there’s a lot of us, as you saw. It’s a long story on how this place was founded, but it started with my late wife, my son, and myself. We found this alcove and decided to settle down, then we just started welcoming people in. The rest is history.” Phil smiled, but it wasn’t his bright happy smile, it had this sadness in it. Maybe his late wife was a touchy topic, Techno made sure to take note of that.

He nodded and took another bite of the rice cake, taking in Phil’s words. Phil seemed to appreciate the silence as he grabbed another cookie. Techno made a note of that too, presuming Phil had a sweet tooth, considering most of the snacks he had put onto the tray were sweet. Techno personally preferred more savoury foods, but each to their own.

“You still seem close with everyone here, they were all smiles and waves when we walked past them. Even with me there, they were friendly.” Techno didn’t realise the connotations of what he said, how it was self-deprecation. He thought it was a valid point to make, he was a new person, untrustworthy, scary looking. Who was he to assume people would be kind to him when they first meet him? Especially after what Jack had said about running into a beast from The Crystal Bearers basement.

“Anyone I bring in is worthy of trust. I only bring those who don’t hurt others into this place. Yes, I know you have hurt people in the past, Techno. I’m no saint either, they don’t call me the Angel of Death for nothing.” Phil sighed and looks at Techno straight on, “You can stay here for as long as you want to, help people with their chores, get to know them. But I would recommend that you just wear casual clothing, and maybe not have anything that would make you more intimidating. No offence.” Phil smiled softly at Techno, showing he did understand what it was like to be misunderstood, and knew how to be less intimidating. Techno nodded at Phil’s words, took his crown off, grabbed his mask off his lap and placed them in a spare place on the coffee table.

“I don’t take offence to comments like that. I know I’m intimidating… I’ll take you up on your offer, though I can’t make any promises that I’ll stay long.” He only had three days after all, but Phil didn’t need to know that. When Phil nodded and stood up, reaching out his hand, Techno also stood and shook the outreached hand.

“Welcome to The Syndicate, Technoblade.” Phil smiled at him before starting to clean up the coffee table, not touching the crown or mask. Techno took this chance to take his cape and sword off. He grabbed his crown and mask, wrapping them up, along with the sword, in his cape to keep them both hidden and safe.

“Uh.. Phil? Where can I put these in the meantime?” Techno raised his items indicating what he was talking about. Phil just smiled as he put the tray down on the counter, motioning to the taller to follow him further into the cottage. Techno followed Phil into a hallway, almost running into him when the shorter man stopped suddenly.

“The door on the left is my eldest son's room, the one across from that is my youngest son's room...” Phil walks down the hall slightly, motioning to a door. “While you stay here this will be your room.” Phil opened the door, revealing a plain room. All that was in it was a bed pressed against the back wall under the window, a desk in the corner and a dresser on the same wall as the door. Techno entered, looking around, he placed his cape-wrap on the dresser to free his hands.

“Are you sure it’s okay for me to use this room? I don’t want to impose on you and your sons.” Techno looked at Phil, almost feeling guilty for taking up space in his home when they had just met. Phil was leaning against the doorframe, a small smile on his face as he watched Techno.

“I wouldn’t have offered for you to stay here if I wasn’t sure mate. My eldest might be… annoyed, but my youngest will enjoy the extra company.” Phils' smile widened at the mention of his sons, who Techno was yet to meet, he didn’t mind though, he just wanted to sleep. Damn that tea and its sleep-inducing properties. “You can sleep if you want mate. You’re practically falling asleep where you stand.”

Techno only managed a nod, before moving and sitting on the bed, noting how soft it was. He felt calmer, and the voices weren’t causing him a headache, despite how excited they had been for him to interact with Phil. When he looked up to thank Phil, the other was gone, and the door was closed. Techno decided to thank him when he woke up from his nap. He’d only be asleep a couple of hours anyway.

He took his shoes off and laid down, feeling as though he was on a cloud with how soft the mattress and pillow felt. He also smelt traces of lavender on the pillow, making him wonder if Phil was expecting Techno to stay for a while. He would ask Phil later after he thanked him. His thoughts drifted off into white noise as he fell into a strangely dreamless, yet restful sleep.

Notes:

Fun fact: I researched Rose Teas for this chapter, and how to make it.. I also wanted Techno to have a potato-based snack, but couldn't find any that would fit with tea so he got stuck with a rice cake LMAO

Emerald Duo Interactions beloved! also, the Syndicate is mentioned!! yay! more lore! and world-building! Hope you guys enjoyed! I'll see you in the next chapter :D

Notes:

thanks for reading this! It's the first time I've posted anything that I'm actually still writing! I have big plans for this one too. It's a combo of an original series I was going to do but never got to, and SBI/mcyt! I've been in brainrot for the two for a long while so I decided to commit the two!

I'm gonna go write the second chapter now. Hope you enjoyed! I cannot wait to see how this will turn out. (I say as I look at the detailed plot I've had planned for 5 years)

see you in the next one :D
