(Finally) you see me / (Finally) I see you

Summary:

"Man, you're so whipped for that Kita"

"Shaddup, yer too for Sunarin"

"Like I told you, it's not like that."

Or, it takes more than a few people for Miya Atsumu to realize that Kita Shinsuke, the new barista at his favourite coffee shop may not be the one he was looking for all along.

Work Text:

Miya Atsumu loved coffee.

Okay, that perhaps wasn't the most accurate way to put it.

Miya Atsumu loved the ambience of a coffee shop. The smell of chocolate and caramel and sugary goodness that was hidden behind those darn counters that were always wiped too clean (yes, he's tried to reach for one but failed and swore Samu was laughing so loud that everyone outside the coffee shop could hear too) but what drew him to his favourite coffee shop again and again recently was something else entirely. It was one, very specific person.

"Hello again Miya-san, how can I take your order?"

Kita Shinsuke. He wasn't sure where this seemingly perfect individual popped up from, but one day he stepped into the shop ready to order his usual and see how green he could make the worker's face by listing as many inclusions as he could, and he came to a full stop in front of shining golden eyes and sparkling silver hair. An angel, descended right from the heavens just to be put in his favourite coffee shop. It was fate, it was-

"Man, you're so whipped for that Kita"

"Shaddup, yer too for Sunarin"

"Like I told you, it's not like that."

So Osamu says he was in his head, and while it was true he should've noticed that the other only had brown eyes and light grey hair, but at the time of their first meeting he was so caught up in this unexpected development that Atsumu completely blanked out until he was already stammering out his name, swiping his card and nearly burning his hand picking up the scalding hot drink that he "ordered". Making his way blankly outside, it wasn't until the summer heat hit him that he finally woke up. When he ranted this to Osamu, the other seemed to struggle to even get a word out through their loud, obnoxious laughing.

"Americano? You don't even know how to spell that! Why would you order a hot drink when you always get them iced, in summer out of all times too!" Osamu crowed as Atsumu wondered if it would be possible to spill the drink onto his phone and have it go through to burn Osamu instead. "But seriously, maybe get his name next time? And actually order something you like instead of y'know, a-a-ame-americano-"

Yeah, he hung up after that.

"Aw, Kita-san, can't you call me Atsumu? Y'know my good-fer-nothin' twin also comes here sometimes..." Atsumu (did not) pout as he had just ordered the right drink this time and was watching Kita write the name for the order on the cup. The other shook his head. "Osamu-san is Osamu-san, so there wouldn't be a mix up, right?"Atsumu was pleased to admit that the whole "americano" incident was far behind him now and he could face the other properly without any issues but the other was surprisingly stubborn on a fact like this. Nonetheless, he was determined to get through.

"Aw, c'mon Kita-san! We've known each other for sooo long now, it's only right you call me Atsumu-san! Say it with me, A-tsu-mu!" Just when he thought he was going to succeed...

"Fat chance, pain-in-the-ass! Stop yer yammering, yer bothering Kita-san and holding up the line!"

Atsumu slowly turned around to see none other than both Osamu and Suna behind him. Suna put down his smartphone with a look that spelled "I just got that on camera, you're welcome."

"I think it's yer fatass that's actually holding up the line! I already finished my order!" Huffing, Atsumu stepped to the side since Kita had already sadly passed his cup down the line and it was more worthwhile to follow that than be further insulted.

"Anyways, don't worry about that guy Kita-san. I'll have the usual and..." "You know what I'm having" "Espresso for this guy, he likes them dark."

Looking at the two, Atsumu seriously wondered why they weren't together yet. They were always whispering about something and then looking at him, they loved to bully him together and had the worst ideas combined, and even now they were finishing each other's-

"sandwiches."

Atsumu jolted and nearly brought down a selection of goods near him, garnering a few looks from the people around him. Once settled down, he rounded on the cause for the near accident which, to nobody's surprise was Suna.

"Man, Sunarin, what'd you do that for? What does that even mean?" Atsumu whined, more upset about the fact that he didn't even hear or sense the other coming.

"You would've noticed me earlier if yer eyes weren't glued onto that Kita-san." Suna drawled in his usual tone, but his eyes were hyper focused on the man at the counter too instead of paying a closer attention to his drink that was being made. Usually Suna was super on top of his food like that but today seemed...different.

Why was Suna also observing Kita-san? Contrary to popular belief, Suna didn't frequent shops nor does he "usually order" an espresso. He likes to order random drinks and see if the place can make them correctly, so he pays close attention to the drink itself. Now...

"He has to be like, a robot or something. Nobody is that perfect. I'm sure he has a weakness. Does he baby talk? He seems like someone who wo-"

Okay, he sure as heck wasn't gonna get into whatever Suna was muttering because that seemed like a whole can of worms. Thankfully, his escape came quickly in the form of their drinks being ready. Osamu was even bragging about how his was first even when he was behind Atsumu in the line, which he quickly refuted that the other's drink was "boring" so it was done first, and Sunarin, ever the traitor, was on Osamu's side again.

After that, time seemed to pass as usual. Atsumu would always frequent the coffee shop and (in Osamu's words) "awfully flirt" with Kita before leaving unsuccessful, and while Osamu didn't really come by again, Suna did. A surprising amount of times, ordering the same espresso so often that now it became his regular order. When they visited together, Kita would sometimes tease at the fact that they seemed to be "quite the pair" and while Atsumu brushed it off, he didn't notice Suna's eyes flashing with an unknown emotion at that. One odd day, Atsumu decided to ask Suna about it head on.

"Why do ya keep coming by? I know my charisma is amazing but I didn't know you were that into espressos?" Atsumu joked towards Suna as they were waiting for their orders. In fact, this was the most he saw Suna by himself instead of being attached to the hip with Osamu. Suna shrugged and said something like "just because" but his eyes were completely on Kita even while talking to Atsumu. Every time, it was like Suna was focused on him, but then immediately on Kita until they left the shop.

When he relayed this to Oikawa and Kuroo during their annual-weekly-sometimes-they-meet-meeting, they both had the same god-awful smirks on their faces. As they nudged each other and whispered something of their own, Atsumu had an unimpressed expression on his face and tapped his foot impatiently in wait. Finally, Kuroo spoke up first.

"Man, Tsum-tsum, you have it bad huh? Suna AND you fighting over Kita? Rough." Atsumu scoffed at that and was just about to remark that it would never be anything like that...but then froze.

Why else would Suna out of all people, go out of his way to do things that he usually never did just for...Kita? He swore he caught the other photographing Kita a few times too! It didn't make sense but it was starting to with how often his yellow orbs were glued onto the dual haired individual behind the counter.

Oikawa shook his head in disapproval, seemingly having a different idea in mind. "No no no, you've got it all wrong. Suna is definitely just checking out the competition! He's onto something~" He chortled at Atsumu's confused face, relishing in his lack of understanding before becoming more serious. "Okay, but like, have you actually talked to Kita past, like, just business? You should try that first before anything, right?" Looking at Oikawa and Kuroo's teasing expressions, Atsumu decided he was going to do exactly that, because it was really about time he took the next step, right?

It was winter now, the snow crunching satisfyingly under his boots as he stepped into the coffee shop just as it was nearing closing time. Stomping out the excess snow on the welcome mat, he hoped the flowers under his coat were still safe as he brought them into the shop. There wasn't anyone but Kita doing some cleaning and he marched right up to him. Kita seemed to be surprised to see Atsumu, which was just exactly the effect he was going for. He had purposely not come into the shop at all that day, and although he didn't expect Kita to really remember one person that wasn't there (he hoped that they would).

"Miya-san, I'm afraid we're closing now-" Kita stopped as he saw Atsumu pull out the slightly crumpled red tulips and hold them out to Kita. "What-"

"Shinsuke Kita-san! I would like to ask you to be my boyfriend! I know I may be just one of your customers that you see often but I fell for you at first sight and this became my favourite coffee shop even more after I met you here so would you please do the honours of becoming my boyfriend?"

Atsumu felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders. His face was likely red from the cold and he only managed to tidy his hair a little but he hoped he was putting his best foot forward here.

He was, right?

"I'm sorry."

Two words echoed in his head as Atsumu groggily woke up, the cold discouraging him from leaving the comfort of his blankets. Well, it wasn't exactly because of the cold, not entirely.

It had been roughly a week (or two?) since Atsumu's failed confession. He's taken to sulk in his cozy blankets and cut himself for now from the outside world, but it didn't mean some unwelcome guests would find their way in. Osamu had been harassing and badgering him, hoping to get a rise out of him so that he would leave the house, and Suna had swung by several times each saying strange things like how Kita wasn't as perfect as he seemed or that there was a new shop that they can go to instead.

While Atsumu understood that all of they were just trying to get him out again and had good intentions, he just couldn't find the energy to pick himself back up again. It was a strange feeling, because it wasn't like this was his first crush, but he felt somehow especially devastated by it.

"I'm sorry, I think we're not very compatible. I am touched by your gesture and your feelings, but I can't be the one for you."

"What a complete shut down, Kita-san." Atsumu murmured, before letting his lids slip shut again.

It was morning, and for some reason, Atsumu was feeling ready to head out. He hadn't heard from Osamu or Suna as much as of late, despite both Oikawa and Kuroo sending him messages akin to condolences. Checking that he had his phone, wallet, and a few crumpled bills he shoved into his pocket instead and slipping on a pair of comfy jogging shoes, Atsumu let his feet take him anywhere. There was no time like the present, right?

Well, he probably should've thought things through before letting his feet take him back to the corner before the coffee shop. The short walk left seemed to be almost taunting him, reminding him that he was almost there, but hadn't reached it yet. Just as he was going to turn away and go another direction, he saw a few familiar figures.

It was Suna. Osamu was hanging a bit further back, and Atsumu had to rub his eyes to make sure he was seeing things correctly. Suna was face to face with Kita, and as he slowly approached, he could hear words like "Tsumu" "confess" "why".

Yeah, Atsumu wanted to know what was going on and "why" alright. The mix of confusing emotions starting from why Suna began following him to the coffee shop instead of Osamu, why Suna made those comments every times, and why Suna always seemed to be bullying him with Osamu but would also give him dirt on Osamu other times was building up to a high that would not come down easily.

Atsumu, as Osamu would say, was always a raging ball of emotions. After stewing in his blankets, his impulse made him approach the trio who had shocked expressions on their faces, not expecting him to suddenly appear like he did. Letting his eyes run over the fact that Suna was grabbing onto the front of Kita's shirt, Osamu approaching with perhaps too many questions on the tip of their tongue, and both Kita and Suna falling suspiciously silent, the boiling over emotions exploded.

"Is this what's going on? I don't hear from ya both and it's because Sunarin's confessing to Kita-san now that I've been turned down, so it's safe to shoot yer shot? You know what, yeah, I failed, whoop-de-doo. You guys enjoy your dates now, while I'll have fun all by myself too that's what." Atsumu spat out poisoned words when he was upset as a defence mechanism, and he always said what he felt like he saw, so after he let that all out, he stormed off despite hearing calls from Suna and Osamu of his name.

Kita, ever-so-silent.

Biting back tears, Atsumu willed his feet to take him elsewhere and prayed it was a nicer place that he could really relax at.

Turns out, what Atsumu needed more was the beach, a cozy spot by the water and letting himself sit in the sand that sunk under his weight, temporarily forgetting how annoying it would be to clean out his clothes later. Shutting down his phone so that he couldn't be reached, Atsumu let himself close his eyes and only focus on the beach waves. At least those weren't frozen over yet.

"Atsumu-san."

That was weird. He was sure waves didn't talk.

"Atsumu-san, I think we should talk."

Yeah, beach waves definitely didn't sound like Kita-

Opening his eyes, he was face to face with Kita's bemused expression, who naturally settled down beside him. Looking around wildly for anyone else, he was relieved to find that Osamu and Suna hadn't followed.

He...wasn't exactly ready to face them yet.

"You kinda said a lot of things and ran off, this time...and last time too. Would you mind letting me say a few things instead?"

Kita's voice was soothing and lulling, just as familiar as it always was. He was instantly taken aback to when they were in the coffee shop, taking and handling orders, and those summer days seemed eons ago in much simpler times.

"I think you don't essentially understand your feelings towards me, and you chose to confess because that was a realistic possibility." Kita mused. "We can be close enough to call ourselves something between acquaintances and friends, but there was no easy way to label what we had, so you tried to put a label on it. While I'm flattered towards your feelings and your appreciation towards me, I think from the start I've only thought that we could be good friends. I'm sorry I didn't say more initially and I didn't get the chance to, with someone holing themselves in, hmm?" The tone turned a bit teasing at the end opposed to the serious start, and Atsumu couldn't help but chuckle.

"Kita-san...I was attracted to yer appearance and yer voice first, but I really thought that this feeling, it must be love, but..." Atsumu clenched his shirt, right above his heart. "Why do I feel strangely relieved that ya turned me down?"

Kita let out a chuckle of his own, and Atsumu let himself daydream just a bit because of how the sound was warm and gentle, but light like a wind chime. "I think yer a smart guy Atsumu-san, but sometimes you let things get a bit mixed up and you tell yourself things and convince yourself that they're true. I think when we met you had a bit of tunnel vision and forgot that sometimes, the ones beside you know you better and have, all along. You just have to see them in a different light now."

Atsumu scrunched his nose. "Whaddya mean by that-"

"MIYA ATSUMU"

Atsumu jolted up right away to see an angry looking Suna heading straight for them. Uh oh, there was no Osamu to play mediator now. He rather his twin be here because Suna looked like he was gonna spit fire. Beside him, Kita was dusting off the sand and looked ready to leave despite his pleading looks to stay and help him. "I think this is where I leave you, remember what I said okay? Look at them, not me."

Then, there was just two. Suna raised his hand up high and Atsumu braced himself for the impact but instead of pain, he felt a fist land softly right above his hammering heart.

"You're SUCH and idiot I can't EVEN with you. Only you could suddenly leave the house without telling any of us and then stumble into something you don't even understand and say even WORSE things and run off leaving us with the mess. I can't believe Kita-san actually ran after you to talk to you, because I was gonna give you a chewing out of my own an-"

"Sunarin...could you possibly..."

"Look at them, not me."

"Suna AND you fighting over Kita?"

"Suna is definitely just checking out the competition!"

"Are you...dyoulikeme?"

Time seemed to freeze for a second before Suna burst into laughter and Atsumu felt his face heat up. His ears were ringing with the pearls of laughter that seemed to surround him. It wasn't as pretty sounding, but it seemed to make his whole body warm and his heart beat even faster at how rare the occurrence was.

"You-don't tell me you thought all this time I liked Osamu?" At Atsumu's slow nod, Suna seemed to want to laugh harder but held back to actually get his words out. "You're such a dumbass, it's always been you all along. Do you know how hard it was to have to watch you look at so many others when I had hoped you'd just turn around and look at me instead?"

Seeing that Atsumu was still staring in shock at him, Suna huffed and stepped closer.

The next second, Atsumu felt warm, chapped lips on his own.

The kiss was chaste and ended quickly, akin to just a brush of lips, but when Suna seemed to have a disappointed expression on his face and seemed ready to turn and go, Atsumu grabbed him by the wrist and slotted their lips together again, this time for a longer kiss.

They always said that your first kiss would be magical, with sparks and fireworks and taste of whatever the other had been eating. It wasn't like that at all. Atsumu could taste the crisp winter air, feel the hot breath of Suna and maybe he could taste a hint of that bitter espresso, melting away to taste ever so sweet now. When the both of them parted for air, Atsumu looked Suna straight in the eyes and found that he finally found the golden eyes he was dreaming of when he first met Kita, and all he had to do was to look right beside him.

"Let's go! I wanna brag to Osamu how I got a boyfriend before he did!"
"Uh, yeah, about that..."
"No way! He has one already? Who? How have I not heard of it before?!"

As the two made their way away from the beach, away from the coffee shop and to a place that was wholly their own, Atsumu knew that he was going to be just fine now.

After all, he and Suna had the whole rest of this year and the next, together.
