Apple nodded once, and then slipped out the door.
The slam of it behind her felt final in a strange way, given that Briar was going to see her tomorrow. It was less about the leaving and more about the fact that she was now alone, is the thing. She wasn’t alone, of course she wasn’t: Honor was upstairs, at least three of her brothers were now in the living room, but except for Ten, all of them were so much younger. She let herself wish, desperately, once, that her dad was here. That her mom was awake. That anything in her entire stupid life had gone right.
And then she stopped. Took a breath. And turned around. “Who’s ready for pizza?”
