Chapter Text
Dream’s shoes stumped hard against his floor and clinked to the heel of his nice black dress shoes.
He was moving fast as he was unexcusibly late. He passed many omega’s who had a appointments well before this time. He headed straight past all of them including his assistant who jumped up with a look of relief on her face, now that he had arrived.
“Was held up at the hospital.” Dream said as he rushed to his main office, a simple but believable lie.
“Are you okay?” Lucienne asked a little worried. Her boss was almost never late after all, not unless there was an emergency. Dream just sighed.
No.
That’s what he wanted to say. While his body was fine his heart and mind were in distress and mental anguish for far too long. Last night and this morning being what truly was pushing him pass his limits.
“You okay?” Lucienne asked again when Dream threw down his back and was rushing to get his coat and scarf off.
“Yeah.” He said simply but with tired huffs from the long and hurried trek he’d just taken down the city street and through his building to his office floor. Lucienne decided to continuing on as usual.
“There was an urgent call from Ms. Beatrice. She’s concerned about her hormone therapy.”
“Yeah, okay.” Dream said showing he was listening as he still rushed to get off his outdoor clothes and his white coat on.
“Mr. Carmicle has a yeast infection, again.” Lucienne said, being sure enough to talk lowly so the other patients in the waiting room wouldn't hear each other’s business.
“Uh-huh. Okay” Dream responded and took the files in her hand from her as he moved over to his desk and computer.
“And these just came for you. And there’s an urgent email as well.” Lucienne said holding out message notes to Dream.
He took the surprising stake of papers and started to flip through them. Every single one was the same.
Desire Emerson
Please Call
All fifteen had that exact same message. A call for almost every ten to fifteen minutes since his office open. Dream showed no outward reaction to Lucienne about it but that didn’t stop her weirded out look at the insistent messages from the young omega she’d only met yesterday that claimed to be Dream’s friend. Dream hid a small swallow from her before setting the notes aside and looking up at her from his desk.
“I’ll be right there.” He said, a gentle order for her to leave and reassure the patients who were watching them from his large window that went across most of his office. The usually open and welcoming decor and architecture feeling suffocating for once. Dream feeling like all their eyes were peering into him. Like they could read everything about him from just staring. Like they knew the sins he’d committed, the vows he’d broken. Lucienne simple nodded and headed out as asked.
Dream watched her leave and began opening his computer with a steady increase in his heart. Afraid of what he’d find. Unsurprisingly the email was from Desire. What Dream hadn’t expected was the many pictures of them lying in bed together.
Both naked and a sleeping Dream curled up to a smiling Desire’s side. The omega’s arm up in obvious pose to take the picture themselves.
“Oh, my God.” Dream muttered out loud and his lips parted slightly as his lips trembled. He took a deep sigh to calm himself. He got up and moved over quickly to the other side of his desk where he’d thrown his bag in the chair. Going for his phone and looking for the most recent number to call him, Desire’s number. It was barely two rings before Desire was answering.
“This is Desire.” A voice answered.
“Where are you?” Dream asked immediately, his voice too panicked to sound properly angry
“I’m in your waiting room. Didn’t you see me when you came in?” Desire said like it was obvious.
Dream looked back immediately, the voice sounding like it was right behind him and coming from the phone. He saw, not too far from the doorway, a casually dressed Desire for once. In nothing but simple comfortably warm fitted jeans, blouse and rose-pink jacket. Their hair styled without product and no make up for once, but that did nothing to lessen their natural beauty. The genuinely happy and practically love-struck smile they gave him only added to that beauty. A bouquet of white lilies in hand.
Dream’s felt ill.
They both hung up as they made eye contact and also both ignored the looks Lucienne was passing from Desire, in front her desk, and Dream, in his office. Desire widened their smile momentaryily in happiness to see the man, but waited patiently like a newly trained puppy to get permission to enter the office.
Dream beckoned them forward as he approached. Desire walked forward into the office as the were silently commanded with a pleased look on their face. Awe-struck and seemingly trying to take in all of Dream. The same look that they gave Dream last night when he came back to find them at the hotel, in bed moments after that, and later in the car on the ride home. Like it had been permanently stuck on their face since Dream changed his mind about what they did last night.
Dream closed the door behind them as they walked in, avoiding those looks and the looks of his curious assistant. The guilt to heavy on his chest to recognize any of them. More than anything he avoided looking at the pictures around of him, Hob, and their beautiful son Orpheus.
“Smell them.” Desire said low but sweetly as they held out the flowers to Dream. A soft smile on their face. It only served to upset Dream more.
“What are you doing?” He asked firmly staring down Desire. The younger omega pausing and their face dropping to that of a confused and kicked-puppy.
“I’m sorry.” They said sadly and with clear hesitancy not knowing what they did wrong to upset the older omega so much. Dream felt a different type of contrition at that.
He shook his head with a soft sigh and put gently hands on Desire’s back ushering them further into the office. Over to the small grey soft, the only place in his office not visible from the large window. He sat Desire down on it and sat himself as well. Rubbing a hand through his hair quickly.
“No. I’m sorry.” Dream said honestly. It wasn’t fair to take this out on them. They were just doing a job, and had been nothing but friendly and cooperative. Dream was the one who fucked up.
“Why?” Desire asked a nervous edge to their voice. This was not the reaction they were expecting after the night they and Dream spent together. Dream looked back up at Desire with his lower face rested in his clasped hands, a serious and bracing expression on his face that made Desire even more anxious.
“You're amazing.” Dream said, starting with the honey before the hatch. Every word out his mouth the truth.
“You're so beautiful.” He continued softly and Desire’s lips were twitching back up slightly in a small smile at the compliments.
“...but we’ve taken this as far as I want it to go.” He said honestly. Having no intentions of pursuing anything further with Desire.
A bitter smile took over the previously hopeful one as Desire looked down at their lap and hands. A sigh leaving them as they decided to be honest for once. They could do that, at least with Dream that could do that for once and just be themselves.
“I liked it... last night.” They said, meaning the words for perhaps the first time in their lives. For once they weren’t giving just another line to feed their clients. Which made it all the harder to understand why Dream was doing this. Never once has Desire been denied. They made the most loyal of men, alpha’s and beta’s turn away from their spouses to and to them. Why was Dream so different? Why was he so difficult? Desire might be more upset about that if it wasn’t part of what made Desire fall for him.
Worst yet, Dream knew what Desire did for a living, the type of people they associated with. He knew that Desire had no problem at all sharing him with his spouse so long as they got to be in his life. So long as they got to experience his passion... his love.
They Just want Dream in their life.
“Yeah, I liked it too. I can’t say that I didn’t.” Dream admitted looking away from Desire but not about to lie to them now. They’ve never lied to one another, not once since they met, and Dream was not about to do them the disservice now. Not after what they shared last night. He had more respect for people he went to bed with then that.
The honest words pulled a smile back on Desire’s face. One brimming with hope and love.
“I don’t want this to be over. And I don’t think you want it to be either.” Desire insisted, and Dream huffed a breath of frustration. He couldn’t allow this to go on any longer.
“You want money?” He asked, quickly, not seeing the Desire react as if the words had struck them. Too busy hoping up to get his check book.
“This is not about money.” Desire said hurt and almost insulted as Dream pulled it from his jacket pocket.
“You accepted money from me so when did this not become about money?” Dream said sitting back down next to them with it and only looking at Desire as long as it took to say that.
Desire clenched their jaw. They knew they shouldn’t have taken that money. They wouldn’t have if it wouldn’t be so suspicious for an escort to be working for free.
Desire’s looked away as the pain from Dream’s word really got to them. They bent down to hold their own legs so they wouldn’t put their feet on the sofa. Looking away to the side and at the other half of the office and not at Dream as their eyes started to glaze with unshed tears of disbelief and anguish. Barely staving them off. They hadn’t cried in years, but they were unsurprised that Dream was the one to be able to make them.
Dream was too busy aggressively writing out a check to Desire to bother noticing any of this.
“Okay... this should take care of everything.” Dream said soft toned but firm, ripping the check out and giving it to Desire who was still refusing to look at him. Desire eventually looked at the held out check and took it hesitantly as they turned back to Dream.
“This isn’t a business thing. This is so real and you know that.” Desire said their voice cracking and blubbering a bit as a few tears escaped.
“What about last night?! I touched you and I-!” Desire continued starting to get a bit hysterical. Unable to accept how wrongly this morning was going. How different they’d imagined it would all turn out. Dream and they were meant to be laughing and touching and kissing and deciding to go out to an early brunch not Dream rejecting and doing his best to send Desire off.
They were caught off guard by Dream’s harsh tone. Louder then the whisper he’d been using all morning but certainly not loud enough to be heard by anyone else. Just enough to shock Desire into silence.
“How do I get through to you?” He asked. While he didn’t want to be so mean about this, clearly that was the only thing that was going to get through to Desire.
“This business transaction, which is what this was, is over.” Dream said coldly.
Desire was stunned to silence. Their vision almost completely blurry from their now silent tears.
“Now please, you have got to get out of here.” Dream tried to say just as firm but this time is was more a desperate plea then anything. He needed this to be over. He needed this chapter in his life to be over so he could forget and he could move on.
“Come on.” He said more gently this time lifting Desire up. The young omega allowing themselves to be moved and guided like a compliant zombie. The flowers still clutched in their hand. Only muscle memory ensuring they got their bag.
Dream let them go and opened the door for them. Usuring Desire out of it and hopefully out of his life for good.
Desire took one more look back at him before continuing onward pass the rest of the waiting room. All the way to the end of the hall were the exiting Elevator awaited. It wasn’t until they were at the door did they stop and pause. Staring intently at the floor with a blink but still wet face.
No, they would not let it end like this.
That was the thought repeating in Desire mind over and over again. They would not let this go. They would not let Dream go.
A picture to Desire’s right caught their eye and they looked to see the article from before along with the picture of a younger Dream posing with his smiling family. Desire’s eyes narrowing at the sight of the beta man at his side.
The husband.
Hateful creature he was, Hob Gadling. Desire’s eyes then moved over to the small child, one he now knew to be well into his teen years but still a fair amount of years younger than Desire themselves.
Orpheus...
That’s their plan B.
