Work Text:

Prince Matthew of the Selenian Empire was an intelligent boy, having spent most of his life studying magic, particularly elemental magic. Cold-based spells were his favorite, but he had yet to craft a personalized spell of his own making.

His best friend Emily was the opposite, pursuing a path of technological expertise, driven by rumors of the neighboring kingdom of Hyrule secretly being home to highly advanced technology kept under wraps by Queen Zelda's orders.

Selenian archaeologists had recently unearthed ancient Hylian ruins in New Tabantha, a Selenian territory directly north of Hyrule's current borders. After some diplomatic consultation, Hyrule's researchers determined the ruins to be relatively primitive enough to allow the Selenians to keep whatever they discovered within, which led to Emily's current project.

The young woman spread a sheet of paper across the table, her brilliant blue eyes analyzing the schematics laid out before her just as the younger prince looked on in confused curiosity.

"What's this thing supposed to be?" Matthew wondered, his silver eyes blinking behind violet-framed glasses. His best friend giggled at his question and gently ruffled his fluffy silver hair in response.

"This is apparently a diagram showcasing a gadget that was once used by Hylian adventurers." She explained, "It's called a Hookshot. It seems to be a metal rod with a pointed tip connected to an extendable chain contained within. With a mere press of a button, the tip will launch forward until it hits a solid surface, upon which it would retract, dragging along its user, making for a creatively fun way of getting around!"

"That sounds fun!" Matthew replied, completely in awe at such a concept. "So... will you attempt to craft it by yourself?"

"Yep!" The brown-haired woman nodded, adjusting her ponytail so as to not get in the way of her analysis of the Hookshot schematics. "I might need your help, though. You can control your fire and cold magic to the point of fine-tuning the temperature, right? I might need instances of rapid heating and cooling to ensure the metal is malleable and rigid enough at different parts of the process. Can you do that for me, Matthew?"

"You got it!" The young prince gave her  an earnest smile, eager to help out his best friend. Emily returned it with a sweet smile of her own, before pulling out the tools she deemed necessary to craft the Hookshot.

"Alright, let's do this together!"

After Emily finished her initial preparations, the two of them found themselves working a furnace (with the proper safety equipment) in their shared workshop, which was just a part of Matthew's room where they conducted all their tests and experiments, whether magical or technological in nature. The steel Emily needed to mold was stored within the container, the woman giving the signal for Matthew to start working his magic.

"Start with a sustained flame at sixteen hundred Celsius!" She ordered, having done the calculations beforehand.

"Got it!" Matthew affirmed, feeding the furnace with a steady stream of mystic fire until it achieved the desired temperature. Despite the very room being imbued with cold magic to keep it comfortably cool, the young man was sweating from the heat as the metal within the furnace melted, trickling into the molds Emily needed them to be in.

"Alright, it's all in! Freeze it to negative two hundred!"

"Ice to be of service!" The young prince joked as he blasted the molten metal with freezing cold, taking good care not to mess with the material's integrity. Emily couldn't help but laugh at his pun, finding his levity endearing and adorable.

"Next: copper, tin, and aluminum!" The woman continued, bringing out the aforementioned metals she needed to complete the Hookshot. "Got all those temperatures in mind?"

"Yep! I'll be sure to apply just enough fire and cold magic to ensure maximum malleability and stability!" Matthew answered, ready to finish this.

After  some more melting and cooling, Emily was now at the stage of assembling the device. Matthew's knowledge of magic came in handy once more. This time, the boy used precise telekinesis to attach the interlocking links of the extendable chain before welding the parts together with a light application of fire magic. He helped Emily attach the rest of the parts, also by welding them together with fire magic.

The two of them stood back and admired their shared handiwork. Emily gripped the handle at the bottom of the Hookshot as Matthew looked on in awe. "Are you sure this'll work?"

"According to my calculations, the physics involved in the Hookshot's functions will be sufficient to drag me to my destination without any ill effects. Here goes!" Matthew gasped as Emily pressed the button on the device's side, its pointed tip launching toward the ceiling, connected to the handle thanks to the extendable chain, before the device pulled its user towards where the tip was planted.

"Woah!" Emily exclaimed as she clung to the ceiling thanks to her newly finished gadget. "Huh, turns out this is fun!"

"Awesome! This is just so cool!" Matthew stood in awe at his friend's success, before she beckoned him to come closer using her free hand.

"Hey Matthew, mind if you can catch me when I fall? Maybe we should make some sort of special gloves that could stick to surfaces so I don't get stuck... Or maybe even boots? What do you think?"

"Yeah, that makes sense." The boy blinked, moving into position right before Emily dropped down and fell into his arms. The woman was taller than him by fifteen centimeters, so her graceful body was more than a handful as he helped her get back on her feet. "Maybe we could save it for tomorrow instead?"

"Sure thing!" Emily smiled sweetly, pulling the boy into a heartfelt hug. "Thanks for helping me put the Hookshot together, Matthew! I believe no one has attempted to recreate it yet, or at the very least succeeded in such an attempt, so I think this is a pretty big achievement!"

"You're welcome, but I merely did as you instructed. You're the one who did most of the planning, preparing, crafting, and other work, Emily." Matthew murmured meekly, feeling all warm and fuzzy from the soft hug his best friend was giving him, yet still feeling like he wasn't really all that helpful.

"Don't sell yourself short; you still helped out a lot! If I didn't have your precision with magic on hand, I'm sure I'd need way more advanced technology to even make something of this quality." The woman reasoned, ruffling her best friend's soft hair. "I think we've earned ourselves a break. Wanna get some ice cream?"

The young prince's eyes lit up at the mention of his favorite dessert. "That sounds great!"
