Work Text:

Owen had a sister, he was there when she got married, there as Owens best friend. She went from being a Carvour to being a Spankoffski. The woman had always been much younger than Owen. Curt remembered the day Owen got the call saying that his nephew Theodore Spankoffski had been born.

He remembers his partners face the first time he met the kid and he remembered watching Owen bond with his kid nephew and when Theodore was 18 Owens sister called saying that she was in labour.

They hadn't even known she was pregnant, well it made sense for Curt not to know, she had never liked him but Owen, she had always been close with and with that Peter Spankoffski was born. Ted despite having been ready to leave for college in a few months, stayed to help his parents take care of his baby brother the two brothers grew close over the months Ted was there.

When the 18 year old left for school, Curt remembers baby Peter crying in his mother's arms and with his older brother gone Curt and Owen as the retiree's they are were left to babysit Peter.

Curt loved the kid but he wished his parents would spend more time with his, even Ted who barely visited anymore seemed to spend more time with him.

Then Owens sister fell ill when Peter was three and before they knew it she was gone. He remembers going to the funeral, consoling Owen, and trying to help Ted and his father through their grief but Pete seemed completely unaffected, like didn't know how to process the loss of his mother.

Curt and Owen stopped having to look after Pete when Ted finished college and got a job but he saw how Ted seemed to be the only when taking care of him. How when ever they visited they could see anger on their father's face in regards to Pete, yelling at the poor boy asking why he was so bad with people and social situations.

Curt felt bad for the kid but it wasn't his business.

Owen was the one who told him that Pete was living with Ted, he was starting to forget things and Owen was starting to use a cane, never truly recovering from the fall that almost ruined their relationship. They tried to visit the boys when they could and when the two of them moved in to the home the boys visited them.

He remembers being in bed when Pete came to them crying, no Ted in sight. The boy went on about how his best friends were gone. This was the first time he'd seen the kid actually crying and show the emotions expect of him. He knew the kid was something called autistic, he remembers the young man being really excited when his brother had gotten him assessed at 12 after doing some research and talking to one of his coworkers, who was also autistic.

Normally when Pete would come alone, it would be to rant to him and Owen about science or to asked them for stories about their glory days but Owen wasn't here he was at an appointment. The kid was devastated, he clearly felt some sort of guilt that he was here and they weren't but it was clear that something had happened to his nephew, he could tell by the broken arm and the look in his eyes.

He was closer to Pete after that, not even telling Owen about the interaction at the kids request.

Months later he met the kids new girlfriend, he watched them leave for college. He never saw them get married him and Owen didn't live long enough for that but he was always watching over them. He met the kids friend and as he watched the boys life play out, he watched as the two of them had twins a boy and a girl.

The kids were named after the boys lost friends, he would never know what happened to them but he knew that despite them being with him and not his nephew they were still as loved as they were by the kids side
