Chapter 1: Some time to think

Chapter Text

Today was a rather calm day in Dreamland. There had been no recent threats, Magolor just opened his theme park, the beast pack has been bettering itself after they got their leader back, and for once Popstar was a quiet planet. No world ending disaster Kirby had to take care of.

For once, Kirby could sit at home and think about all of their adventures. They laid on their bed with a picture book in front of them, a slight breeze coming through their open window. In the book they had been keeping pictures to remember each of their adventures over the years.

Kirby loved this book more than anything. Not more than their actual friends of course, and food beat it out too, but this book was very special to them. In fact, they've dedicated two of its most recent pages entirely to their best friends: Prince Fluff and Ribbon!

Now, Kirby has a lot of “best friends” they've been collecting like Pokémon cards over the years, even if they don't know what a Pokémon is. Bandana dee, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Elfilin, the dream friends, and much more, but Fluff and Ribbon felt…different? Not in a bad way, they didn't think that, but they missed both of them a lot. Maybe that was it. They could get up and write a letter t-

“KIRBY!! You awake there buddy? I've been trying to get your attention for a few minutes now!”

Kirby jumped hearing the sudden voice but calmed down when they realized it was Bandee, with a letter in hand. “You didn't answer the door when I knocked, so I just came in. That's okay, right?”

“Of course!” Kirby closed their book and hopped off the bed to put it on their table. “Sorry I didn't hear you knocking.. ooooo what's that you've got?”

“It's an invitation for you! The King sent me to give you it, he's throwing a small dinner party!” Bandee handed Kirby the letter, neatly folded in half and clearly not written by Dedede. Even if Kirby could barely read they could recognize Meta Knight's fancy cursive writing anywhere. “You'll come eat with us right?”

“Why wouldn't I!? Free food with my favorite friends! Thanks for telling me Bandee!”

“Woohoo! I'll see you later then, byebye Kirby!” He happily left Kirby's house adjusting his bandana as he shut the door behind him.

Kirby sat back down on his bed and tried to read the letter, even though they already knew what it was for. However they gave up five words in and set it to the side to read later, choosing to look at their picture book more instead.

Humming a little tune to himself (Green Greens), they kept staring at the pages of Ribbon and Fluff happy as can be. They even pulled out some crayons from Void knows where and started doodling the three of them hanging out next to some of the photos.

“Ribbon was so cool when she held me up during our fight against that thing! And Fluff did great against that Yin Yarn guy! I wish we could all play together…”

While talking to themself, they drew their two friends both holding their hands (do we call them hands? sure may as well) with little hearts around it. Realizing this once they stopped talking, they hurriedly put down the crayon… embarrassed? Why were they embarrassed? They held hands with their friends all the time, but the idea of being like that with both of them was.. different, in a weird way. It didn't make any sense!

Putting down the picture book once again, they thought a bit more. “It would be nice to play with them both… and we could eat snacks and nap together and hold hands and-” Cutting themself off once they started to blush, the puffball had an idea.

“Dedede and Meta do those things all the time! I gotta tell them!”

With their usual determination now used for something that isn't helping a new friend, they put away their crayons and ran out the door to find Dedede in his castle.

Chapter 2: A surprise meeting with the King

Summary:

Wanting to talk to the first person they could think of, Kirby went to castle Dedede to pester their "enemy" about their current issue.

Chapter Text

The king was busy manning the waddle dees to get things set up for the dinner party in a few hours. Shouting orders as kindly as he could – he does care for them after all – he watched as the table was set best fit for a king.

“Alright alright, everyone! Y'all've done good, go take yourselves a nice long break.” All the dees saluted him as they walked by, some stopping for a quick hug or high five.

Once the last dee has left, Dedede took the time to really appreciate the work they had put in. The table was well decorated with a giant tablecloth and flowers in the center, silverware was set up at each seat even if they weren't going to be used, and altogether it was just nice yet casual enough for a meal with his 3 closest friends.

Dedede was, in fact, so proud of the work of the dees that he didn't notice the breeze coming in through the window, or the fact Kirby was standing right beside him after coming through said window.

“DEDEDEDEDE I HAVE A QUESTION” Kirby shouted as if they weren't standing right next to him. The king was about to pull out his hammer and whack whatever was next to him before taking a second and realizing it was just that annoying puffball.

“Jeez kid, give a man a warning next time! How'd you even- wait a second…you opened that window didn't ya?” He picked up the tiny pink nuisance and set them on his shoulder. “Didn't Bandee say you ain't supposed to be here for another hour?”

“But I have a question! That's what I said!!”

“Oh…yeah, right, you did say that. Sorry kiddo, ya scared be so bad I didn't notice. What's on yer mind?”

Kirby seemed a bit nervous for once when they spoke up. “You know how you and Meta are always super friendly to each other? Like when you carry him around or share your food with him or give him a really long healing kiss or-”

Dedede shoved a hand over their mouth as fast as he could. “Yes yes no need to say it so loud…” He cleared his throat and moved his hand. “What about it anyways?”

Kirby hopped down and looked up at him, the same way any curious child with a question would look at their parents. “What's it called if I wanna do all that with someone?”

“Huh? That's love, kid. Aren't ya like that with all your friends though?”

“Well, yeah….but it feels different! You know what I mean right? Like how you and Meta act all the ti-”

“OKAY!! Okay! I get your point kid, it's like me n Mety, yadda yadda, this is about YOU. So ya feel like that ‘bout somebody?”

“Yeah!! Ribbon and Fluff!”

“Ribbon and Fluff….” Dedede thought for a few seconds. “Wait, both of them? Like, ya wanna get with your two best friends?”

“Yeah..?” Kirby looked a bit sad at how he reacted, a bit nervous even. “Is that bad?”

“No! No no that…well it should be fine, I think. I just don't know how you'll make it work between you three. Have they even met each other?”

“Uhh…” They lightly clapped their hands while thinking. “No? But I think they know about each other!”

“That's a start…” The king picked up the child and put them back on his shoulder. “Listen, if ya want someone t’ talk to about love, talk to Mety later. I dunno how to handle the double-love situation and he might know more than me.”

Kirby's face lit up at the suggestion. “Ohhhh okay!! I'll go see him right now then!”

“Wait, Kirbs that ain't what I-”

“See you at dinner!” Before Dedede could say another thing, Kirby was back out the window he came in, floating off to the Halberd far in the sky.

He walked over to the window and shut it, not all that surprised they ran off like that. Kirby’s never been the most patient child, especially not with things they care about. Dedede left to roam the castle in search of something to do while he waited for dinner time to arrive.
