Secrets never stay hidden for long

Summary:

It was supposed to be a normal interview of the famous young CEO Yoo Jonghyuk - when he suddenly admitted that he is in a relationship with a man, without mentioning his name.
People online go wild, having the wildest theories who his mysterious boyfriend could be, but none of them get it right... something that bothers said boyfriend very much.

Notes:

I know, I know. I shouldn't write another fanfic, when I have so many open ones right now. But I couldn't help myself, I'm sorry.

This fanfic is based on another fanfic of mine - five years ago I published my very first fanfic on Ao3, a Miyusawa fanfic with the title 'The Interview'. I was recently scrolling through some of my old fanfics just for fun, and when I found it I had immediately a scenario for Joongdok in my mind, and before I knew it, I was already writing.

As always: English is not my native language, so of course there will be some mistakes.

I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter 1: The Interview

Chapter Text

Kim Dokja was exhausted and tired, when he finally woke up after a long night. The first thing he did was going to the kitchen, looking for something to eat. He had skipped Dinner yesterday and his stomach reminded him very loudly that he was hungry and needed food right now.

Kim Dokja had slept for more than 10 hours – not really that unusual when he had a deadline and wrote for several days in a row without a break. Especially the days before a deadline he was pulling all nighters or slept only for a few hours so that he could make it in time.

He was dead tired now, but at least he had finished his new book what meant that he could relax a bit until he had an idea for his next work and hell would start all over again.

On the huge kitchen table stood a plate with sandwiches. Beside it was a small note, written in that familiar messy handwriting Kim Dokja knew very well.

I won’t make it home today.

Simple and short as always and yet, it filled Kim Dokja’s heart with warmth. Even when he had a stressful time himself, his boyfriend would always think about him and consider his poor eating habits, making sure to prepare food for him to eat.

With a smile Kim Dokja took the plate with sandwiches and went to the living room that was, just like their kitchen, ridiculously huge. He sat down on their couch and turned the TV on.

With a sigh he took the cloud shaped, stuffed toy that was sitting in the corner of the couch and squeezed it with one hand, while he took a sandwich with the other. The plate balanced on his crossed legs and he still wore his pyjama, but he was too lazy to get dressed when he planned to stay home the whole day anyway.

If he remembered correct (and he did, because there was no way he would ever forget it), today was Yoo Joonghyuk’s live interview for a popular celebrity talk show.

And even if Kim Dokja already knew everything that was to know about that guy named Yoo Joonghyuk, he still wanted to watch it. So far he had never missed a single one of his interviews or other TV appearances. There was nearly not enough Yoo Joonghyuk in his life.

Kim Dokja would never admit it, but he had some unhealthy obsession with this guy. In some hidden corner of his wardrobe laid a pile a magazines (carefully put away in some box his boyfriend hopefully would never open) – every single one where Yoo Joonghyuk had been on the cover, or where a featured article about him was inside. Kim Dokja had bought them all.

Yoo Joonghyuk, the young CEO of “Supreme”, a company he had built up all by himself, so smart and overly handsome that he was voted as “sexiest man of the country”, “one of the Top 5 handsomest man” or was in some lists of “hottest single man”, and similar stuff for five years now, a person that was out of everyone’s reach, to the point that it was sometimes hard to believe that he was real.

It seemed even more unbelievable that the very same guy was his boyfriend.

Kim Dokja had met Yoo Joonghyuk around five years ago, during an event that was mostly for rich or famous people. The whole story sounded as if it came straight out of a stupid romance novel, and sometimes he found it hard to believe that it really happened.

Kim Dokja was only 23 – he had published his debut novel one year before said event happened, and for whatever reason, it became so popular that it climbed the ranks of every bestseller list in Korea in record time. And the moment his novel got an English translation, he climbed the lists in some other countries as well. Kim Dokja was totally overwhelmed. Never in his life had he thought that the story he wrote during his college time, that was just some random idea and nothing he thought of as special, was liked and cherished by so many people.

When he won an international book award, his name became known outside of Korea too.

At this time, Kim Dokja was sure that he would only be a one-hit-wonder author, who was just lucky enough that his first novel got popular – and he highly doubted that his second book would get the same attention as his first one. But to his surprise, his second novel was just as popular as the first, maybe even a bit more.

It was still a mystery to him how this happened.

Normally, Kim Dokja didn’t like going to special events like this. He always felt out of place and uncomfortable, like someone that didn’t belong in that world – a fact that never changed. So he usually avoided events with many (famous or rich) people as much as possible.

The reason why he attended this one, despite his uneasiness, was because the woman that hosted it (her name was Uriel, a rich young lady from Europe), was a huge fan of his works and personally invited him. Kim Dokja’s friend Han Sooyoung, who was a famous writer herself, told him that things like this would happen more often from now on and that he should start getting used to it. Even if he didn’t like it, he had to show his face in public at least a couple of times, to form some connections and get some good publicity. He would never be happy about it, but since Uriel was a nice person and he really liked her, he decided that it wouldn’t be that bad to visit her event and try to socialise with other people.

And it was just like Han Sooyoung said – it didn’t hurt having some connections that could become useful in the future.

That’s where he saw Yoo Joonghyuk in real life for the first time. Until that evening, he had only saw him in some interviews on TV or in magazines – and honestly, not even the best photo was able to catch his beauty. Kim Dokja kind of admired him – that guy was the same age as him, but was already the CEO of his own company that became in just a couple of years one of the most influential companies in the country. He was someone that already succeeded in life.

He wore a black and expensive designer suit (nothing Kim Dokja could compare with – his suit wasn’t that cheap either, since Han Sooyoung had insisted that he had to look presentable on events like this, but it was definitely not in the same prize range like his), his short, black hair was perfectly done, not even a single strand out of place, and the black gloves he wore gave him something elegant and mysterious. Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t smile when he talked to others, he had rather some cold air around him, but for some reason it was oddly charming. Or maybe people just fell for his handsome face.

Kim Dokja was sure that they wouldn’t cross paths, and he had no reason to start a conversation himself, so he kept talking to the people that approached him. Uriel was especially eager to talk to him, hogging him for half of the evening. She even hugged him when she spotted him, something Kim Dokja would normally feel uncomfortable about, but somehow, it didn’t bother him when it was Uriel (his number one fan as she claimed). Uriel was praising his new book, telling him over and over again how much she liked it and that she couldn’t wait for his next work.

Kim Dokja tried not to feel too pressured, knowing that she only meant well. It made him happy that she was such a huge fan, but at the same time, he was always afraid that he would disappoint his fans with his next book.

After some time he excused himself from their conversation, feeling exhausted talking to so many people for so long. There were far more people interested in getting to know him (partly because Uriel was talking so much to him), that he started to feel uncomfortable. He didn’t belong in this high society world.

With a sigh he ate some of the delicious food, stuffing himself, when there was suddenly someone tipping on his shoulder, demanding his attention.

It was one of the waiters that held a tablet with a glass of wine in his hands. Beside it laid a black business card.

“From the gentleman with the black gloves, next to the stairs”, he said in a bored voice, giving him both items, before he vanished back into the crowd.

Kim Dokja was totally dumbfounded. He could tell by first glance that it was not a normal business card – there was a private number written on it, without a name (probably so that if someone lost it no one knew who this number belonged to), and on the back of it stood, in messy handwriting: Next Friday xxx Hotel at 8 p.m.

Kim Dokja looked in the direction the waiter had told him – a group of people stood there, talking to each other. He looked at their hands, there was only one person that wore black gloves…

As if he noticed that someone was looking at him, Yoo Joonghyuk looked up right that moment and their eyes met. He hold his gaze – his coldness replaced by a warm and flirtatious smile, what made his intentions more than clear. Kim Dokja reacted more on instinct and out of a whim – he gave him a small nod in return, a way to tell him that he agreed to his invitation. Yoo Joonghyuk turned back around, continuing his previous talk.

What the actual hell was that? It sounded like something that came straight out of a romance movie. A rich, young and handsome CEO had his eyes on a plain looking, ordinary guy. Kim Dokja had heard stories like that before: That there were a lot of famous or rich people that were secretly gay but couldn’t make it public, because it could damage their reputation, and so they picked random people up on events like this for a one night stand or as some secret lover.

Kim Dokja didn’t understand why Yoo Joonghyuk invited someone like him. There were plenty of other, way better looking people attending that event, and there was nothing about him that was special or outstanding – nothing that would catch someone’s attention.

But… since he was gay himself and his last relationship had been plenty of years ago, he wouldn’t complain. Yoo Joonghyuk was extraordinary handsome, so one night with him definitely wouldn’t hurt. They probably would never see each other again afterwards anyway.

To his surprise, the following Friday didn’t end in a hot and steamy night in some random hotel room like Kim Dokja had expected – instead it ended in front of his apartment door, with a soft kiss on the back of his hand and the promise to meet again.

After three more dates that all ended up the same way, always with Yoo Joonghyuk escorting him home, giving him a soft kiss either on his hand or his forehead, they officially started going out and not even half a year later they already moved in together.

For obvious reasons, why never made their relationship public. It was just how Kim Dokja preferred it – he didn’t want to be the centre of attention and he already disliked showing his face in public when it wasn’t necessary. The moment he would reveal that he was dating one of the best looking man of the world, his quiet life would be over.

Now, five years later, they were still very much in love with each other. Despite their busy work schedules, their love had only grown over the years.

(And yet, they still weren’t married – something Kim Dokja was a bit upset about, even if he would never admit that. He was waiting for Yoo Joonghyuk to make the first step and propose to him).

The interview started and Kim Dokja turned his attention back to the TV, his eyes glued to the screen, drinking in the sight.

Yoo Joonghyuk entered the studio, wearing a black, expensive suit as always, looking absolutely stunning. Kim Dokja would never get used to that sight, even after all those years. He could still look at him for hours without getting tired.

Under his suit you could see his well defined muscles and he was sure that he wasn’t the only one that almost started drooling when he sat down, looking like the deity he was.

“We welcome our guest for today: Yoo Joonghyuk the young CEO of “Supreme”!” There was loud applause from the audience in the studio, and as always, Yoo Joonghyuk wasn’t smiling, having his usual aloof, a bit cold expression on his face. People were so used to it by now that it would be more shocking if he would ever be kind and friendly in public.

The interview started with the typical small talk, and then shifted to business related questions about his work, his success or his current projects.

Yoo Joonghyuk answered everything honestly and in that cold, overly self confident way of his. It would seem arrogant and unsympathetic on everyone else, but it was oddly normal when it came from the CEO himself.

After some time, the questions became more personal, but as always, he never gave an accurate answer and let people interpret his words however they want: He was known for strictly keeping his private life a secret if possible, not wanting to get it mixed up with his work or his status as a famous person. Of course, people tried to get informations out of him or stalked him, but Yoo Joonghyuk had the money and the people to keep everything under wraps.

It always gave Yoo Joonghyuk something mysterious and it let a lot of room for speculations regarding his personal (love) life.

“Since you became a CEO and known to the public, you were featured in many magazines that voted you as one of the most handsome man of the world. How do you feel about this, getting so much attention?” It was a normal question, and usually Yoo Joonghyuk would answer it vague as always, but this time, he had an untypical, small smile on his lips.

“I honestly don’t care much about stuff like this. At some point it starts to get exhausting: Whenever I’m attending some event or a party, be it business related or not, there are always people coming to me. Some of them with ulterior motives, and some clearly exaggerate with their admiration for me, begging for my attention every chance they get. But...”, a short pause, “… I have to disappoint all of you: I have a boyfriend, and I’m not interested in anyone else.” A long silence followed, people having to digest what he just said. Even the Interviewer was stunned for a moment, his jaw literally dropping to the ground. It took him some time to get his composure back and continue with his next question.

Kim Dokja, meanwhile, stared at the TV in shock, his brain not working, needing some time to process what he had just heard.

This fucking bastard. How could he…?

He just admitted in a live interview that he was gay and in a relationship with someone else. The commotion he would cause with this! It already gave Kim Dokja a headache.

At least he knew that Yoo Joonghyuk would never out him too – not when they never talked about it. Knowing him he surely had made sure beforehand that not even a single information about Kim Dokja got out – if there would only be a small chance that something like this might happen, he would never have said anything in the first place.

So he must have an understandable and plausible reason to tell it now during a live interview.

“So that means… you are gay?”, the Interviewer asked and Yoo Joonghyuk shrugged.

“I would rather say that I’m bisexual. Even if I’m not sure, since he is the first person I fell in love with.”

A declaration of love in front of so many people? This is still a live interview, have some mercy on the viewers (and your poor boyfriend that almost dies of embarrassment)!

Kim Dokja’s heart ached. He loved Yoo Joonghyuk so much… why couldn’t he tell him that directly, but had to say it in front of thousands of people? Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t know that he was watching his interview (Kim Dokja highly doubted that his boyfriend knew that he watched all of them – otherwise, he would never hear the end of it).

“It’s very brave of you to tell us that so openly, since we all know that it is not an easy topic.”

“I know and I’m afraid that my boyfriend won’t be that happy that I’ve said it.” The Interviewer seemed a bit startled, then he asked his next – obvious – question.

“You never answered personal questions… so was there a reason why you decided to tell us about it today?” Yoo Joonghyuk had a devilish smirk on his lips when he looked straight at the camera as if he knew Kim Dokja was watching, and it felt like the following words were directed at him:

“As a punishment. He is way too excited and proud about some of his fans lately, a bit too much in my opinion, and it annoys me a bit.”

That guy, really…!

“Does that mean that your boyfriend is someone famous like you? Another CEO? Or an actor or singer?”, the Interviewer asked curious, leaning a bit forward, eager to know the answer to this question.

“I already said enough. If I say more, he is going to kill me.”

The interview continued, but Kim Dokja wasn’t interested to hear the rest any more. He was looking for his phone, while he squeezed the stuffed toy in his arms, then he immediately opened his private twitter account, where he only followed his close friends, including both their private and official accounts. Kim Dokja quickly typed the hashtag #YooJoonghyuk in, knowing that a lot of people already talked about it.

He knew that it was much better for his mental health if he wouldn’t read tweets, but he needed to see what people said about Yoo Joonghyuk online.

And I was sooo sure he would be together with the actress Lee Seolhwa. #sadlife

OTP ruined

(attached to this post was a picture of Yoo Joonghyuk and Lee Seolhwa that had met during some event)

I CAN’T BELIEVE HE IS GAY OMG

He always said that his work comes first, so I never expected him to be in a relationship, so it must be someone from his work or another CEO.

I think it’s fake. He just said it so that they leave him alone.

Maybe his boyfriend isn’t known at all? Wouldn’t be surprised if it would be someone ordinary.

The most handsome guy in the world is gay WE ARE WINNING.

I LOVE YOU Yoo Joonghyuk.

Kim Dokja continued scrolling through comments, but the more he read, the more depressed he felt. A lot of people dropped names of other famous CEO’s or actors and singer, posting every single picture Yoo Joonghyuk had ever taken with another man that was nearly his age, but there was no one that suspected him, the writer Kim Dokja, to be said boyfriend.

It wasn’t a surprise, since they were never seen in public together, they didn’t even attend the same events except of the ones hosted by Uriel, and they strictly kept away from each other then.

Kim Dokja should be happy about it, because it meant that he was still safe and as long as no one knew that he was the guy by his side, he could continue his peaceful life with Yoo Joonghyuk, without any troubles.

And yet, it still bothered him for some reason.
