Work Text:
Lately Shen Qingqiu's jiejies had been talking with excitement about a nice young man that they were in regular contact with for a while now. Where much to Shen Qingqiu's astonishment it was not a client of the courtesans that they had come to fancy and vice versa, giving them a promise for a better life away from the red light district that owned them, like it would happen on occasion.
No, it was a normal farmer that had lately been the one they had made a contract with to supply their kitchen with fresh produce from his farm and even came to deliver it to them.
Usually it would be the cook who would go out to the market to buy produce to feed both the various courtesans and other workers, same as the guests of the Warm Red Pavilion. However as she was getting on in the years, she had been struggling lately with transporting all the heavy produce from the market back to the brothel and while the other workers would often help they did not always have time to do so. Which the farmer apparently had noticed and as such he had offered that he could simply bring the produce directly to them with his cart, which the Madam of the pavilion had accepted gratefully.
As such every few days the young man would come over to the Warm Red Pavilion after he had finished up on the market and deliver the ordered produce directly to the house.
And it left the jiejies of the establishment in high spirits, as according to what they had said to Shen Qingqiu during his regular visits, the young man was incredibly handsome and also ever so polite and charming. It actually rather surprised Shen Qingqiu to hear that the young farmer had apparently not even once tried to ask for any of the courtesans' services in return for his own services, much to the lamenting of his jiejies who made no secret out of their attraction to the young handsome man. Not that Shen Qingqiu could blame them. Not only did he see what kind of unsightly people would often visit these women, but he could not deny that no matter how much men made his skin crawl he certainly did like the sight of many of them. It was simply a shame that all men he had met by now were either beasts, idiots, or disappointments, and as such not worth his time.
Over the last few weeks Shen Qingqiu had been swarmed with work. Missions that had to be done, meetings that had to be held, assignments of disciples that had to be graded. And he was starting to feel the strain of it as he was beginning to reach his limits. Which was why he was ever so excited to finally finish up for today and to visit his jiejies after quite some time.
Packing up the last few reports he did, he handed them over to Ming Fan to have them delivered over to An Ding Peak to have them approved and added to the archives.
“Is there anything else Shizun needs?” Ming Fan asked, the scrolls securely in his arms. The young man was now in his mid-twenties and had mostly finished his studies under Shen Qingqiu, and he had grown rather well into the role of his successor. Gone was the little snot-nosed brat and instead he had become a respectable cultivator in his own right.
“Yes.” Shen Qingqiu nodded, “This master will be going out for a while, so oversee the lessons of your Shidis and Shimeis for the rest of the day.” While the young man had started out as a little brutish idiot, he had grown into a fine scholar who could be trusted with the Peak and would one day be able to care for it in its entirety when Shen Qingqiu would ascent along with his martial siblings.
Not that Shen Qingqiu knew quite yet what he would actually do once the day would come.
“Yes, Shizun!” Ming Fan bowed to him, accepting the order given to him. “This disciple will then excuse himself.” With this being said, the young man then turned and left the Bamboo House to make his way over to An Ding Peak.
Shen Qingqiu however mounted his sword once he himself had left the building and flew up high to leave the sect entirely for the rest of the day.
With sword it took no time at all to arrive at the city at the foot of Cang Qiong Mountain. Allowing Shen Qingqiu to make his way over to the Warm Red Pavilion in a timely fashion, even after walking the last bit once he had arrived at the city gates.
It was still midday, many hours before the brothel would actually open up its services for people to enjoy. However thanks to his deep friendship with his jiejies, he had long been given the permission to come and visit whenever he wished for, even outside of its working hours. An invitation he had made usage of on multiple occasions where he would drop in for a visit during the day simply to unwind and get away from the sect for a bit to share some quality time with his jiejies, just like he did today.
Knocking at the door it only took a few moments for it to be opened by none other than the Madam of the brothel. Whose eyes widened with delight once she saw who was standing on the other side. “Jiu-Er, my dear.” she pulled Shen Qingqiu into a hug, which he reciprocated, “It is so lovely to see you. Come in.” she stepped aside to let him enter the building.
“Hello Madam Li.” Shen Qingqiu greeted her back with a small smile on his face, something he only ever accomplished freely around his jiejies. “And thank you so much. I hope I do not impose with my visit.”
“Oh, nonsense. You would never impose on us Jiu-Er. You are always a welcome guest here and you know it.” Madam Li waved him off as they walked deeper into the building. “The others are still doing some of the cleaning up and preparing everything for tonight, but I am sure that they will join us a bit later.”
That came to no surprise. This was usually the time by which any overnight guests would have left and thus was the most ideal time to clean up and also for the workers to also have some time for themselves. “Shall I help a bit?” Ever since Shen Qingqiu had developed a friendship with the various women of this establishment he had often helped out with the chores simply out of the wish to help out his friends and that had certainly not changed since he had become a cultivation master and Peak Lord, even if most of his martial siblings would certainly turn their noses at seeing a Peak Lord like him doing the dishes at a brothel.
Madam Li also hardly cared about station when it came to Shen Qingqiu, whom she knew since he was a boy and was like a little brother to her. As such she looked thoughtful about the offer and what tasks still had to be done that the other could help with, as after all among family it was normal to help out with such things.
But before she could answer there was once more a knock at the door and a voice called out from the other side. “Hello? This is Luo Binghe! I got your orders for today!”
As if it had been on queue and perfectly timed, Madam Li had to give a small laugh. “What marvellous timing. Would Jiu-Er help me with bringing everything inside?”
“Of course, that is no problem, Madam Li.” Shen Qingqiu nodded.
Having a very good memory, Shen Qingqiu could easily recognise the name the voice had called out. Luo Binghe was the name of the farmer his jiejies had been gushing about lately. So Shen Qingqiu would finally get the chance to meet that mysterious farmer that had seemingly charmed all of his jiejies and see for himself if he truly was such a nice man like they had said.
Following his jiejie outside, who greeted the farmer warmly, Shen Qingqiu then took a good look at the famous farmer that had been mentioned to him so often. To find himself actually a bit surprised at the sight that greeted him, because this young man was much more attractive and charming looking than he had ever imagined from his jiejies' descriptions of him.
Now Shen Qingqiu regularly saw his fair share of attractive men, as there simply were no unattractive people within Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, at least when it came to the Peak Lords and Elders. Liu Qingge certainly shared the same beauty like his sister. Yue Qingyuan was as handsome as they came. Wei Qingwei had this raw power to him with his defined body. Mu Qingfang had a sophisticated and gentle charm. And so many more examples. One would almost think that the previous generation of Peak Lords had picked their successors based on their looks, not on skill.
Yet this Luo Binghe was on an entirely different level to them all, with his smooth and sun-kissed skin, broad and strong shoulders, soft looking fluffy hair, and these deep black eyes that almost seemed to be filled with the night sky as they looked back at Shen Qingqiu. Luo Binghe had every single feature that one would praise the various Peak Lords with and even much more. Shen Qingqiu was sure that wherever the farmer went, women and men alike would turn and follow, eager for his attention and approval.
“Hello Binghe.” Madam Li greeted the farmer, “Thank you as usual for coming all the way here to bring us everything.” she said, before she then pointed at Shen Qingqiu, who was standing behind her. “Binghe, may I introduce you to my dearest friend Shen Qingqiu?” she then in return gestured at the farmer, “Jiu-Er, this is Luo Binghe whom we had told you about.”
The name clearly must have rang a bell for Luo Binghe, as his eyes widened for a moment in realisation. “Master Shen, this humble one is honoured to meet such an esteemed cultivator as yourself.” he bowed to the cultivator.
Shen Qingqiu was not quite sure what to think about being recognised by someone, as there were already a few false rumours going around regarding his visits to this establishment thanks to the brute. So he did not need any more. Still his jiejies liked Luo Binghe, who had always treated them with consideration and kindness, so he was going to be polite in return. As such he gave a light bow in return, “This one is glad as well to meet the person my sisters had been talking so fondly of as for late. I am thankful for all the help you have given to them with your service.”
“Oh, of course.” Luo Binghe gave a truly dazzling smile that could blind someone with how bright it was. It could have rivalled the sun itself. “It is always my pleasure to be able to help out, even if just with something small like this.”
“What are you talking about 'small'?” Madam Li interjected, “You come here regularly with fresh vegetables and rice, and even bring us meats from the market. That is nothing small, believe me.” her voice was much like that of a mother or older sister in this moment, showing how truly fond she was of Luo Binghe.
“But it's truly nothing much. Most of the produce is from me anyway and grabbing a few meats while I am at the market anyway to sell my own produce is no big problem. And it's not like my oxen notices much difference when pulling the cart.” Luo Binghe continued being humble, making Madam Li acquiescent for now as she shook her head with amusement.
“Anyway, enough of that now.” Madam Li clapped her hands together, “Let us get everything inside and stored in the pantry before it gets spoiled in the sun, and once we are finished we can talk a bit more over tea.”
With the order made by the older woman, everyone began to move and unpack the cart. Madam Li herself only picked out the smaller things like the basket with the wrapped cuts of meat, as she herself was also not the youngest any more and both Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu himself were enough gentleman to not expect a lady to lift heavy weights.
Shen Qingqiu himself picked up one of the many baskets full of vegetables, which had a considerable weight and would make most mortals struggle at least a little bit. It seemed as if Luo Binghe did certainly not swindle the women of the brothel by only selling them the produce that were either not as well grown or looked a bit off. No, instead he had seemingly picked out good produce that were large, healthy and certainly worth the price he asked for them. Which certainly made Shen Qingqiu feel a bit more respect for the young man, that he was seemingly not trying to make a quick buck by tricking innocent women who were already looked down upon a lot by society. It was a rarity among men.
Luo Binghe in the meantime picked up the heavy sack of rice, which he sat onto his shoulder as if it weighed nothing at all despite the considerate weight it must have had. Shen Qingqiu could not help himself from stealing a glance, thinking that Luo Binghe had most certainly a well-defined and strong body that had been build from years of farm work. Shen Qingqiu would have bet that the other would have made an excellent cultivator if he had come to a sect and trained.
One by one the three of them carried everything inside of the building and stored it away into the kitchen. Where they had gotten greeted by the pavilion's elderly cook, Xiu jiejie, who was ever so delighted to see both Shen Qingqiu – whom she had given a kiss on the cheek in greeting – and also Luo Binghe. Where soon enough everything was put away and stored properly to be used later.
With the work being done Madam Li then took both men with her into one of the private sitting room to have some tea like she had promised, along with a few snacks that Xiu jiejie had quickly made for them.
Madam Li poured them all a cup of the sweet tea Shen Qingqiu favoured as she asked both of them about their well-being and how work was fairing for them. Despite the drastic social differences between all the parties, Madam Li easily conversed with everyone as if talking to her own family and kept the conversation flowing with practised ease. So Shen Qingqiu told her about how lately his youngest disciples had actually improved with their musical skills and would preform later that month for guests. While Luo Binghe mentioned how a few days ago a new set of chicks had hatched on his farm.
But then another person entered the room, Chao jiejie, who had called Madam Li because of a minor problem that needed the Madam's help, making the Madam excuse herself and leave the sitting room for a moment. At which the conversation basically died.
Shen Qingqiu was not usually one who held many conversations with men unless he had to. While it was clear as day that the farmer was rather intimidated about talking to an immortal master without explicit permission to speak up.
However Shen Qingqiu wished to be courteous to the man who had been kind to his jiejies. As such he took out his fan, opening it with an elegant movement of his wrist to fan himself, as he turned his attention towards his companion. “This master had heard quite a lot about you from my sisters. And I must admit that I had at first been slightly sceptic about you, as not many people are that kind to courtesans and other members of the lower class. But I have found myself positively surprised, so this master wishes to thank you for helping my sisters out so much.”
Luo Binghe's eyes widened with astonishment at being thanked like this and a light blush formed on his cheeks. Before he quickly stammered with a flustered expression, “Master Shen does not have to thank this humble one. I just wanted to help out a bit, since the ladies were always so nice when they came to shop from my stall at the market and I just find it natural to help out others.”
“That is an honourable trait that you have.” Shen Qingqiu said. It was rare that he ever complimented people, but usually he would talk to his disciples and he wanted them to strive for greater height by working hard instead of becoming too content from too much praise for the smallest achievements, as if they were toddlers learning to talk. However this man was not his disciple, but a friend of his jiejies, so Shen Qingqiu was much more lenient with him. “However it is not as natural to people like it may feel to you.”
“That I am aware of.” a small, sad smile flickered over Luo Binghe's face. “You know Master Shen, my late mother used to be nothing but a simple washerwoman and as you can surely imagine not many had been too kind to her either. Yet she had still always taught me the importance of showing kindness to the people around me, from the lowly beggar to the high class noble. So truly she would be the one to thank, as without her I would not be the person I am and would not have befriended these nice women.”
The story did not surprise Shen Qingqiu in the slightest. He himself knew all too well how people of the lower classes got treated by their masters. “Your late mother sounds like a wonderful lady and she had certainly done a great job at raising you into a respectable young man.” Shen Qingqiu found himself surprised at how easy he found it to talk to Luo Binghe, but he guessed his soft spot for women and his trust in their instincts did play some role into it. Though admittedly Luo Binghe indeed seemed as charming and easy to talk to like the jiejies had told him. He had the aura of an innocent lamb, despite being easily a head taller and much broader than Shen Qingqiu was.
Once more a charming smile found its way onto Luo Binghe's face at having his late mother complimented. “She indeed was the best. Despite not having had much herself, she had still taken me in from the streets and raised me with all the love she had to give. I can not even begin to imagine what would have become of me, if she had not taken me in and saved me from the streets as a young child.”
Shen Qingqiu found himself surprised to hear that Luo Binghe used to be a street rat, much like he himself had once been, making them more alike than he expected and probably much more than Luo Binghe himself was believing. Which was why Shen Qingqiu very much knew what would have become of the young man if he had not been blessed like that. He would have ended up like Shen Qingqiu, being caught by human traffickers and sold as a slave to become just as miserable as him. If he even survived that long.
Shen Qingqiu could begin to feel the sour taste of jealousy on his tongue about how much more fortunate this farmer was than him, to have been saved by a loving mother. It was almost laughable, an esteemed Peak Lord and immortal master, being jealous of a simple farmer who probably could not even read or write. He could feel the twitch in his fingers from the sudden wish to throw his tea into the man's face for having been so fortunate to be loved by a mother and to be taught to be kind and how to love, unlike Shen Qingqiu who only knew the pain and humiliation men could inflict onto a helpless child.
But he held his temper and took a deep breath. This man was from his jiejies' friend and he did not want to ruin it for them by being hostile for no reason. Luo Binghe was not at fault for what had been done to Shen Qingqiu, nor for having been more fortunate by being taken in by a mother. Also deep down Shen Qingqiu did not want to ruin it for himself either, as this was the first time he found himself able to talk to a man without that nagging feeling of threat that always put him on edge around men.
So after taking a few breaths and sip from his tea to swallow down the bile that had threatened to rise up and overtake him, Shen Qingqiu then nodded at his companion. “Then you must make sure to continue honouring her memory and make sure to continue to show kindness to these who deserve it, like the ladies of this establishment.”
“I will, that this one promises to you Master Shen!” Luo Binghe beamed much like a dog that had been given a treat.
Shen Qingqiu could barely look at that dazzling sight, so he instead occupied himself with his fan. “That is good then.”
Not too long after Madam Li and Chao jiejie then returned and once more joined the two men. However Luo Binghe got up after finishing his tea. “This humble one thanks the ladies for their hospitality and also Master Shen for the delightful talk. However this one has to return to his work, so I must excuse myself.” Luo Binghe bowed to the group.
Yet he lingered for a moment longer and his eyes found Shen Qingqiu's own, “This Binghe hopes that if we meet again, that Master Shen will honour this one with another chat.” he bowed once more just to him, “I wish you all a pleasant evening.” With this he then took his leave, taking his oxen and returning to his farm on the outskirts of the city.
“Well, if our Jiu-Er hasn't charmed someone.” Madam Li giggled as she leaned on the table with her elbows, to give Shen Qingqiu a teasing grin.
“Oh, stop making up nonsense.” Shen Qingqiu rolled his eyes at her jokes, “He is probably just being polite, since I am a cultivator, and nothing more.” After all everyone was polite to him, due to his status, even the people who could not stand him. It was nothing special.
“Or you are simply underselling yourself again, Jiu-Er.” Madam Li waved her finger at the man she knew since he was nothing more than a young boy. “You bewitch men and women alike with your beauty, intelligence and strength, yet never seem to notice it since you got such bad self-esteem for no reason.” she tutted at him, her eyes filled with sympathy for the man she considered as a younger brother. “But believe me, young Binghe seems to have gotten a bit of a fancy for you. Since he never seemed remotely that eager to talk to me or the other girls that much like he does with you.”
Shen Qingqiu could still only roll his eyes at her jokes. It was nothing new either, since Madam Li also liked to joke that the reason that brute Liu Qingge would always follow him around around to annoy him was because he liked him, same with Yue Qingyuan, and even Mu Qingfang, so Shen Qingqiu was very much used to these jokes by this point. So he didn't deem the jokes worth a reply.
Instead Chao jiejie decided to fill in the silence by speaking up with her usual cheerful voice that was filled with excitement. “And, what do you think of him, Jiu-Er?” she asked with youthful excitement, like one of the many female disciples at the Sect would do about whatever Shixiong they currently found the most attractive, “Binghe is really as handsome and charming as I said, isn't he?” she had a dreamy expression on her face as she giggled.
His jiejies always had an effect on Shen Qingqiu that made him soften up. As such he found himself answering with honesty to the question, “I guess he is.”
“See!” she giggled with delight, as she playfully kicked her legs out from where she sat, “I told you he is special, but you always looked so sceptical.”
Laughing at her antics, Shen Qingqiu had to conceit defeat, “I guess you have.”
***
“Shizun.” a sweet voice called out through the Bamboo House, making Shen Qingqiu look up from his work.
“Hello, Ying-Er.” Shen Qingqiu greeted his favourite disciple with a small smile on his lips, as the young woman entered his study with a cheerful bounce to her step. “How can this master help you?”
“This Ying-Er was thinking about going to the market, since I need a new comb and also wanted to get a few snacks. So I was wondering if Shizun would like to come along?” Ning Yingying replied to him in a small sing-sang voice, while her head tilted to the side at her question.
“Are none of your Shixiong available?” Shen Qingqiu then asked in return out of curiosity, “I am sure that they would love to join you.”
“Maybe? I didn't really ask them.” she then shrugged, before smiling brightly, “Because I wanted to go with Shizun. It had been so long since we last had the chance to go out together.”
That was true. First Shen Qingqiu himself had been swarmed with work and when he had managed to clear out more time Ning Yingying however had been busy with a mission. As such the idea to enjoy some quality time with the girl who was much like a daughter to him did sound like a pleasant idea. “Then this master will gladly join you.” he agreed as he got out from his chair, much to Ning Yingying's delight.
Though it make Shen Qingqiu wonder if the farmer might also be at the market that day or not. Not that it would matter much, as it was not as if he was trying to see him again or anything like that.
Together the pair left the mountain and entered the city. The market was moderately full, with vendors offering their wares too the various people passing by. Ning Yingying quickly located a stall selling combs, along other various things for hair, to replace her old one that she had dropped a day earlier and chipped. It was a lovely comb with colourful flowers engraved into the wood, making it for a nice accessory for the woman as well.
The pair, who very much shared a similar sweet tooth, then decided to also buy themselves some sweets to share, as they strolled around the market some more. Together they looked at the many stalls and the various things they all offered, where occasionally they bought a few things. Ning Yingying bought a few little knick-knacks for her Shixiong and other friends she had made in the sect over the years, while Shen Qingqiu bought himself a book that he had spotted.
However as they walked the young woman then had to excuse herself for a moment to relieve herself. So while she went and located to closest public lavatory, Shen Qingqiu waited for her and let his eyes wander over the crowd to pass the time. For him to spot a set of fluffy black hair at a stall selling vegetables to an old lady. It was Luo Binghe.
Where, as if he had noticed the eyes on him, the man in question then looked up and spotted Shen Qingqiu standing by the side in return. Making Luo Binghe wave towards him, “Master Shen, hello!”
Still wishing to be polite to the man who was treating his jiejies so well, as there was no other reason for Shen Qingqiu to react, Shen Qingqiu did acknowledge the young farmer and made his way over towards the stall. “Good day to you, Luo Binghe.”
“Good day to you too, Master Shen.” Luo Binghe smiled brightly at him. “Out to do some shopping?” he asked politely in that typical small talk manner, yet somehow he looked genuinely interest, “If this humble one may be so bold, but I had always assumed that sects had designated people who do the shopping.”
“We do. Most purchases for food and supplies are done by our An Ding Peak.” Shen Qingqiu answered the indirect question, “This master is simply on a private outing with one of my disciples to buy a few small things.”
“That sounds lovely.” Luo Binghe leaned against his stall in a relaxed manner, “Did Master Shen find anything that had caught his interest?”
Truth to be told, Shen Qingqiu was not sure why the farmer seemed so interested. Shen Qingqiu had initially been expecting that the man simply wanted to greet him or try to sell him his wares. Yet he instead was just doing small talk. He wasn't even trying to worm his or a relative's way into the sect like so many would often try when spotting the Peak Lord. Not that with Luo Binghe's age he would have much success any more, even if it was a bit of a waste.
But he still decided to at least answer the question, even if he did not understand the interest the man seemed to have in him. “This master did find a book of poems from a poet that I enjoy.” he pulled out the book in question to show it to the other.
“I do love poems.” Luo Binghe said as he took a look at the book, “Sadly this one can't really read, so I do not know that many poems to be much of a conversation partner for someone like Master Shen. But the inn around the corner often has performers that will recite poems from all over, which I like to listen to when I finish my work on the farm. The auntie that often performs there also sings beautiful ballads.”
Shen Qingqiu was not sure what made him say it, but before he thought much about it the words already came out of his mouth, “This master could teach you how to read, if Luo Binghe so wishes.”
Obviously the humble farmer himself had also not expected such a sudden offer, as his eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, this humble one could never impose on Master Shen like this!” he looked incredibly flustered and overwhelmed with the offer given, “Surely Master Shen has much more important things to attend to than to worry about some farmer like me. And also I would never be able to pay Master Shen for such a honoured service.” his words had sped up, making them a bit of a ramble.
Shen Qingqiu however narrowed his eyes at the man in front of him. “Who said anything about payment? This master is well set, so do not worry about such trivial things.” he pulled out his fan, lifting it in front of his face like a shield, “And this one would not have offered it, if it would impose on me or any of such nonsense. This Master simply thought that it might be of help if you could read and write and as I am a Scholar and teacher who had taught many in all the four arts, I have the abilities to teach you. Also you have been very kind to my sisters, as such I consider it my duty to repay this kindness in kind.” With this being said he gave Luo Binghe a look from over his fan, “But if the offer causes you discomfort, please do feel free to refuse.”
For a moment longer Luo Binghe looked torn, unsure if he could truly accept such a generous offer from such a famous Scholar like the Qing Jing Peak Lord himself. Yet after some consideration and probably not finding any potential reasons to humbly reject the offer, Luo Binghe then looked at him with such hopeful eyes. “If it truly does not impose on Master Shen, then this one would be truly thankful.”
“It does not, so stop asking.” Shen Qingqiu snapped his fan shut. “Currently this one does not have any missions I have to go onto, so I am usually free in the afternoons after finishing teaching my disciples and could make some time to see you at your farm.”
“The afternoon would be ideal for me.” Luo Binghe then replied happily. “During the morning until midday I usually take care of my farm and my animals and twice a week I come here to sell my produce.”
“Then how about this master comes to your farm tomorrow?” Shen Qingqiu then suggested to him. As he doubted that the farmer would come to the market two days in a row, but probably spread it out over the week.
“That would be perfect.” Luo Binghe seemed truly excited and ever so thankful. So much in fact that he reached out to take Shen Qingqiu's hands into his own, “Truly Master Shen, thank you very much. I do not know how I could ever repay your kindness.”
Shen Qingqiu however found himself rather startled at suddenly having his hands held by a man. But before he had any chance to actually react, Luo Binghe let go once more. And somehow, instead of the revulsion Shen Qingqiu usually felt whenever a man would touch him anywhere, he now almost fell something akin to a loss.
Luo Binghe however was very much unaware about the other's reaction, that was perfectly hidden behind his usual aloof mask. Instead the farmer reached down to the produce displayed on his stall and packed up a few lychees that he then held out to Shen Qingqiu. “This is not much, but please take them as a thank you, Master Shen.”
Not seeing any reason to refuse, Shen Qingqiu accepted the small gift of gratitude. “Thank you very much, Luo Binghe.”
It was then that another person joined the two men at the stall. “Sorry for it taking so long Shizun.” Ning Yingying ran up towards her master. Her eyes then turned to Luo Binghe with interest, once she noticed him, “Oh. Is this a friend of Shizun?”
At this Shen Qingqiu was actually not sure what to reply. Because surely they were not friends. Acquaintances was probably the more fitting term. He thought?
Before he could answer the question, Luo Binghe spoke up with a professional and charming smile, “This one is Luo Binghe. And surely you must be Master Shen's disciple that he had mentioned?” He had neither confirmed nor denied the question and instead had simply sidestepped it entirely.
“Yes, I am.” Ning Yingying replied, “This one's name is Ning Yingying, disciple of Qing Jing's Peak Lord Shen Qingqiu, from Cang Qiong Mountain Sect. It is a pleasure meeting you, Luo Binghe.”
“The pleasure is all mine.” came the charming reply, which made the young woman giggle in delight.
It seemed as if Shen Qingqiu's assumption was indeed correct that the handsome looks from the young man easily charmed people. As such Shen Qingqiu then spoke up once more, addressing his disciple. “Ying-Er, we should not keep Luo Binghe from his work for too long, otherwise he might not make any more sales today if we keep on hovering around his stall.” As much as he wished for Ning Yingying to one day find a nice spouse for herself, and Luo Binghe certainly seemed to be a very charming and honest young man, he did want her to mature a bit more first before she found herself running head first into some crush without thinking about it properly first. She was still very naïve sadly.
Her eyes widening in realisation, she then bowed to Luo Binghe, “This one apologises if I have caused a disturbance. This Yingying will then best take her leave together with my Shizun.” She then once more smiled, “But it was very nice meeting you.”
“It was a pleasure meeting Master Shen and his disciple today as well.” Luo Binghe then replied, looking at both, “Then this one wishes the two cultivators a pleasant day.”
The pair then only lingered for a moment longer, enough for Luo Binghe to give Shen Qingqiu the directions to his farm. Where then, with a promise to see each other like agreed on the next day, Shen Qingqiu and Ning Yingying wished the farmer a good day in return and continued on their way.
***
Shen Qingqiu had no idea what had come over him when he had offered to teach Luo Binghe how to read. Yes, he truly wanted to be nice to the one man other than him who had contentiously shown kindness to his jiejies from the brothel. But this was still a man! And Shen Qingqiu was going to visit him, most likely repeatedly, in his free time, to teach him something. He must have lost his mind. Truly the idiocy of his martial siblings must be contagious for him to have done that, especially without prompting!
However Shen Qingqiu was a man of his word. As such he packed up a few of his teaching supplies, including an older set of brushes he used to use and still had, before getting onto his sword and leaving the sect with it.
Shen Qingqiu used his sword until he spotted the river Luo Binghe had mentioned led towards his farm, where he then landed to walk the rest of the bit and follow the landmarks that had been described to him, in order to find the correct set of lands among the many farming areas. And soon enough he spotted the many willow trees along the river bank, where indeed like described was a split from the main country road that lead to a walkway where various plum blossom trees where growing that belonged to Luo Binghe's lands. Which already was a truly magnificent sight with its natural beauty, yet when he walked past the trees that marked the boarder of the land, Shen Qingqiu found himself truly amazed at the picturesque sight that greeted him of various lush fields growing all kinds of crops, paddy fields filled with rice plants of a marvellous healthy colour, and overlooking it all was a modest cottage with direct access to the river that was surrounded by a little garden and had what must be stables not too far off to the side.
The farm was modest by all standards and the right size for a small farmer's family to work on their own for most of the time, where extra labourers were only needed during the big harvest seasons. Yet it was stunning it its simplistic beauty and it filled Shen Qingqiu with a sense of calm he had only ever experienced with the bamboo forest growing on his Qing Jing Peak.
Yet what had ended up making Shen Qingqiu's breath hitch was the sight that greeted him from next to the cottage. It was Luo Binghe, standing shirtless in his front yard and with an axe in hand as he chopped firewood, all while a thin film of sweat glistened on his toned body and the muscles flexed beneath the sun-kissed skin.
Shen Qingqiu had expected Luo Binghe to be well-build from working on a farm all day, especially as his general body shape had certainly indicated it. Yet suddenly finding himself faced with the sight of the other's form left Shen Qingqiu rather overwhelmed, so much in fact that he could only pull out his fan to somehow create a barrier for some decency and he wanted to yell at that young man and call him all kinds of shameless for his behaviour! But even in his flustered state Shen Qingqiu knew it would have been silly. These were Luo Binghe's lands and it was a rather warm day for spring, so there was no harm done for him to take off his shirt to not overheat as he worked. And what would the farmer even think if he saw an esteemed cultivator, one much older than him, behaving like some shy maiden? It was not as if Luo Binghe had anything that Shen Qingqiu had never seen before on himself.
While Shen Qingqiu was stuck on the spot like a spooked cat, Luo Binghe however noticed the presence just beyond the walkway leading to his cottage. “Mater Shen, you have come.” he wiped some sweat off his brow with a smile, as he placed his axe down to walk up towards his guest.
Once both men had met in the middle, Luo Binghe gave a shy look, “This humble one apologises for looking so insightful, but I was running low on firewood and had not been sure when exactly Master Shen would arrive.”
“Oh, that is quite alright.” Shen Qingqiu had to concentrate to keep his voice neutral. Same as he strained himself more than he would ever admit, even on the thread of death, to not stare at the strong chest in front of him, as he clutched his fan like a lifeline and hoped it would hide any embarrassing reactions of his face, like the blush Shen Qingqiu was fighting to suppress. “It is important to not slack on one's work and this master had done his own fair share of chopping firewood during my youth, so I know not only the importance of its task, but also the physical strain behind it.” Although he had never taken off his shirt, no matter how much he might have sweat.
“Then this one is relieved.” Luo Binghe replied, before indicating to his little cottage. “But please do come in, Master Shen and have a seat, while this one quickly cleans up.”
Getting a nod in agreement from the cultivator, Luo Binghe then lead Shen Qingqiu into his cottage that was outfitted with everything a person needed, with a few personal touches to it that gave it a cosy charm.
“Please do sit down, Master Shen.” Luo Binghe gestured at his little low table, while using his other hand to rub the back of his neck in a slightly embarrassed manner. “I know my humble home is probably a lot more cramped than what Master Shen is used to, but this one still hopes he can feel at home.”
“Luo Binghe does not have to be worried or embarrassed about such things. You have a lovely home.” Shen Qingqiu reassured him as he took a seat. “Also you might be surprised, but this one also lives in a simple cottage, not much bigger than your own home. I do not see the usage of living in some opulent palace full of servants, simply to show off whatever wealth I might have. Truly a waste of space and resources in my mind. This master rather have people recognise me for my achievements and skills, not for the size of my house.”
Hearing all of this made Luo Binghe look at Shen Qingqiu with almost childlike amazement at being told by a man of status and wealth, that he preferred to live in a comfortable cottage and openly looked down on the wealthy the humble farmer and son of a washerwoman surely knew. Before making a small and delightful laugh, “Somehow this doesn't even surprise me. Master Shen is truly amazing.” Luo Binghe looked truly amused, yet there was no ridicule or anything in his eyes, but only something that bordered on affection and respect.
Which made Shen Qingqiu begin to feel somehow funny in his chest, making him break eye contact with the younger man.
Making him miss how Luo Binghe continued gazing at him with open affection for a moment longer. Before he then did excuse himself for a moment to clean up the firewood and freshen up.
Not much time passed until Luo Binghe then returned, now properly dressed and with his face and hands washed clean. Where he then joined Shen Qingqiu at the table with freshly made tea.
In the meantime Shen Qingqiu had unpacked all of his teaching supplies and laid them out on the table, and he had even already begun grinding some ink for them to use.
With everything ready he then looked at his new student. “Does Luo Binghe know how to write his name?” he then asked. Many illiterate people often knew how to do their name, but not all of them, so Shen Qingqiu found it important to know where to start with teaching.
At which Luo Binghe nodded, “Yes, this one can write his name.”
“Then show me.” Shen Qingqiu pushed the parchment and the ink and brush over towards the other to use. He wanted to see if the other knew how to properly hold a brush and how steady his work was.
Nodding at the instruction, Luo Binghe then reached out for the brush, picking it up and dipping it into the ink. Which he then used to begin writing his name.
Shen Qingqiu however scrunched his nose at the sight. Admittedly Shen Qingqiu was used to be surrounded by young masters from well-off homes and trained Scholars, while his current student was a farmer whose mother had been a low ranking servant, but the posture was truly abysmal which also reflected itself in the sloppy work of the hanzi. It was only just readable, the '冰' from Luo Binghe's name being the cleanest of all these symbols, but only barely.
Still Shen Qingqiu did accept it to have a proper look at it. “'Luo' like the Luo river? And 'Binghe' as in 'icy river'?”
“Yes.” Luo Binghe nodded in reply. “Master Shen remembers how I had mentioned that I had been adopted? Well, I had originally gotten found floating in a basket within the Luo river during an icy winter's day. So the people who had found me decided to name me Luo Binghe.”
Shen Qingqiu guessed that was a straight to the point name. But who was he to judge a person's name? His name was not much better and at least it was not as straight forward as the way demons named their children. “I see.”
However what he was still judging was the awful craftsmanship. He was a scholar after all and if he was going to teach Luo Binghe how to write, he would do it the same way he did it with all of his disciples. “That is all well, but this Master has to say that Luo Binghe's posture during writing is truly awful and the way you have held the brush was wrong as well. It looked more like you were trying to hold chopsticks, not a brush.”
Suddenly finding himself being scolded left Luo Binghe almost shell shocked and a deep blush formed on his face. “This one apologises to Master Shen!”
Shen Qingqiu however only clicked his tongue. “It is alright. This one was not expecting all too much and I am here to teach you now.” He then picked up the brush, “Now watch on how it is properly done.” Making sure to move slowly, he pushed back his flowing sleeve to not dirty it, before letting the brush gently glide along the parchment to write the three characters of Luo Binghe's name down, right next to Luo Binghe's own version. And the difference was stark. “It is important to hold the brush the correct way, as otherwise you will not achieve the proper strokes and might also risk smudging everything as you write until it becomes unintelligible.”
Luo Binghe watched him intently, nodding along as the scholar explained and showed off the way the brush had to be held.
“Then try again.” Shen Qingqiu then ordered as he held out the brush to the other once more.
Making Luo Binghe take it from his hand and try to replicate the way Shen Qingqiu had been holding it. Only to struggle a bit, so Shen Qingqiu reached over, taking Luo Binghe's hand into his own to adjust the hold manually. But then Shen Qingqiu realised what he was doing and that he was touching Luo Binghe's hand directly, and he had to stop himself from jolting. However not from the shock that he had done something like that, but that it once more did not bother him like it usually did.
Trying to not think too much about it, Shen Qingqiu then took his hands back and folded them onto his lap. “Now try again. Take your time.”
As ordered Luo Binghe then once more wrote his name. And while it still was sloppy and needed a lot more practise, it was already a lot more smooth than his first attempt where he had held the brush like a toddler might do. Which made him beam so much that Shen Qingqiu could almost see a dog's tail wag behind his back from excitement as he presented the result to the scholar. “It is already so much better. Thank you so much, Master Shen.”
“I have only shown you how to hold a brush, so this Master hardly deserves so much thanks. There is still much Luo Binghe must learn and he must not think that I will tolerate any slacking off.” Shen Qingqiu waved him off.
But Luo Binghe was not put off even for the slightest bit and continued being as excited as a puppy that wished to be praised.
Making Shen Qingqiu sigh internally. “But this Master guesses that you are correct that your attempt just now was much better.” After all, Luo Binghe was not a disciple of him, so it was not as if there was much reason that he had to be as harsh with him as Shen Qingqiu was with them. He was teaching a friend of his sisters how to write, not how to fight demons without being killed. “You have done especially well with the '冰'. It looks very clean and smooth.”
“Thank you very much.” Luo Binghe was practically oozing with joy at the little praise, “That was the first symbol that I had learned as a child and I liked to write 'Bingbing' in the sand all the time.” he admitted. But then he gave Shen Qingqiu a curious look, “If this one may be so bold do ask, but what was the first hanzi Master Shen had learned? Was it also his name?”
The question did take Shen Qingqiu a bit off guard, as he had not expected it. However he did pick up the brush once more and after dipping it into the ink, he wrote down a character. '九'. “That means 'Jiu', the character for nine,” he explained, before writing the character for Shen above it, “and this means 'Shen', which then forms this one's birth name 'Shen Jiu'.”
Luo Binghe looked intently at the character nine and his fingers even subtly traced the character within the air. “So Master Shen's birth name is Shen Jiu?” Luo Binghe asked, “Well, this one does remember that Madam Li had called you 'Jiu-Er' the day we had met.” He then once more looked at Shen Qingqiu with such innocent curiosity and fascination, “And how is Master Shen's courtesy name written?”
Shen Qingqiu was not quite sure why the other would be that interest in his name over Luo Binghe's own, but as requested he wrote down his courtesy name as well. “Shen uses the character for 'Liquid'. While the Qingqiu is made out of the characters for 'Clear', which is the character this one shares with all of the Peak Lords of my generation, and 'Autumn'.”
Once more Luo Binghe watched exactly how the names got written, before holding out his hand. “May I try?”
While Shen Qingqiu was still not sure why the other would want to learn his name, he was still here to teach Luo Binghe how to read and write. So he handed the brush back once more to let him try out writing Shen Qingqiu's two names.
While the other was busy repeatedly writing down both of their names for a bit, Shen Qingqiu reached over to the tea pot that now had enough time to steep and poured himself a cup to have a sip. To find himself pleasantly surprised. “This is very nice tea.” It certainly was not up to the level of the tea Shen Qingqiu regularly had gotten from Ming Fan, whose family were gentleman tea farmers, but it had a lovely sweet taste to it just like Shen Qingqiu preferred it.
Looking up from where he was writing, Luo Binghe smiled with mild relieve. “I am glad to hear that. I had noticed that Master Shen seemed to favour sweet flavours, so before going home yesterday I had purchased some sweet tea leaves to serve to you today.”
Shen Qingqiu was actually a bit touched to hear that. Not only had Luo Binghe seemingly noticed his sweet tooth during the two occasions that they had meet before, one where the jiejies had served them sweet tea and the other time where Shen Qingqiu had shared some candy with Ning Yingying on the market, but he had went out of his way to buy him sweet tea when the farmer probably did not own too much spare money. “Thank you.”
“Master Shen is more than welcome. It is the least I can do after he came all the way here to teach me and that without even asking for anything in return.” Luo Binghe looked so honest in that moment, that Shen Qingqiu could only believe in his genuine wish to thank him. “In fact, this one was so bold to buy a few cuts of meat as well, since I was hoping to invite Master Shen to dinner after we finished with the lessons. If this one might sound bold, but I have been told that I am a talented chef, so if Master Shen would humour me I would be honoured.”
“That was really not needed.” Shen Qingqiu replied a bit flustered. He had never been expecting anything in return for the favour he was doing and had said it clearly to the other before, and on top of that he was practised in inedia and did not need to eat much to begin with. Yet it actually made him happy that the other had went out of his way so much for him, which was something no one else had ever done for him. As such he nodded, “But if Luo Binghe has already bought the ingredients, then this Master guesses he has to accept the hospitality.”
Having the offer for dinner accepted made Luo Binghe look like the sun had risen in the sky, from how much it filled him with pure joy. “Thank you so much, Master Shen.”
“These is really nothing to thank me for.” Shen Qingqiu huffed and looked away embarrassed, “Now let us get back to the lessons.”
“Yes, Master Shen!” Luo Binghe gave an imitation of the salute he had seen Ning Yingying do the day before, as he went back to work with newly found elan.
***
The two ended up studying until the evening, where Luo Binghe then cooked them both a meal as he had offered. And as Shen Qingqiu had found out the other was more than simply talented when it came to cooking. Shen Qingqiu had eaten meals cooked from many famous chefs from all corners of the human realm, yet somehow they all paled in comparison to the food Luo Binghe had cooked. Food that was truly nothing more than a simple meal common for the average member of the working class with nothing truly fancy about it, yet the taste was beyond anything Shen Qingqiu had ever tasted. It tasted like home.
As the two of them shared the meal, where Shen Qingqiu could simply not help himself from eating his fill for the first time in so long, they also shared a much more casual conversation about various topics and yet nothing particular either. It was a relaxed atmosphere that Shen Qingqiu usually only knew from the Warm Red Pavilion, when he was surrounded by his jiejies and they would laugh and joke together.
But eventually Shen Qingqiu did have to leave and return to the sect, while Luo Binghe had to check up on his farm animals a last time before also calling in for the night.
However only a few days later Shen Qingqiu returned to the farm once more to continue the lessons. And then again. And again. Until it became a regular trip, where he would come to the farm twice a week. Same as he began to visit the market much more regularly as well, that it became part of his regular schedule just as much as visiting his jiejies was. On occasion Ning Yingying also came along, who had gotten curious about the farmer her Shizun had 'grown so close to' according to her, same as his jiejies once they had heard about the two men they had introduced to each other having become something like friends.
As it turned out Luo Binghe was also a quick study and soon enough was able to read sentences – albeit still slowly, but he was steadily practising with the few little booklets Shen Qingqiu had borrowed him – and he had begun to label his wares whenever he visited the market with his cart.
Yet despite the incredible progress, Shen Qingqiu's visits did not lessen. He still came over to teach Luo Binghe, even if by now their lessons usually involved the two of them reading together. Sometimes both would sit together in either the living room or in the front garden of the cottage, as each of them read a book or a poem, with Luo Binghe occasionally asking about a character he found himself struggling with, and later on would talk about it, or Luo Binghe would read something out loud to Shen Qingqiu in a relaxed and calming manner.
Shen Qingqiu came to truly appreciate these visits, that truly by this point had nothing to do with teaching a friend of friends, but visiting a friend to spend time with him.
By this point a few months had passed and spring had turned into summer.
The last two visits Shen Qingqiu had sadly missed, as he had been on a mission together with the brute. So he had been especially excited about visiting Luo Binghe again that day and sit with him on the porch of the cottage, to oversee the writing the farmer had done during his absence – which also had gotten so much neater and easier to read.
Yet something was odd today. Despite the otherwise calm atmosphere, Luo Binghe was somehow oddly fidgety today. Shen Qingqiu wondered if something had happened while he had been gone or if the other was simply a bit stressed out as the harvest season was coming closer by the day and the farmer would be swarmed with work by the end of summer.
But as the hours passed and the other had yet to speak up about anything being wrong, Shen Qingqiu came to the conclusion that it probably must be the latter. Not that it would surprise him. He may not be a farmer, but he certainly knew what a hectic time the harvest season was for farmers even ages before the season began. They had to hire labourers – where occasionally also the junior disciples of Cang Qiong Mountain where send out to help the local farmer, as the sect after all was also dependent on the farmers and their produce – and they had to hope for good weather as well as otherwise a year's worth of work could end up ruined and they might face poverty.
However when evening came and the both of them had finished the meal Luo Binghe had cooked, which was some Ma Po Tofu with fresh vegetables from Luo Binghe's garden, which was usually the time Shen Qingqiu would leave back for the sect, Luo Binghe suddenly spoke up. “Say Master Shen, do you have anything planned tomorrow?”
Shen Qingqiu found himself slightly surprised at the suddenly question. “Unless some emergency happens that needs this one's urgent attention, no. Why does Binghe ask?”
Again the other was fidgeting around, but much more than during the entire time Shen Qingqiu had been visiting. He even for a moment bit his lip nervously, before finally speaking up. “Well, lately this one was thinking that the days were really nice and pleasant, and... well... I have been really enjoying getting to spend so much time with you and getting to know you... So I was hoping that maybe Master Shen would honour this one and would allow me to ask you out for tomorrow evening?” Luo Binghe's face was practically burning up and he could barely look up from his own feet, as he rambled like a nervous boy, “Of course this one would understand if someone of Master Shen's calibre has no interest. After all this one is nothing but a humble farmer who could never dream of holding a candle to someone as magnificent and amazing as you, but this one knows that he would forever regret it if he did not at least try to win Master Shen's affection.”
However while the other was rambling around, Shen Qingqiu himself was completely and utterly flabbergasted to the point of being speechless, while his entire face felt like it had been set on fire. Because was Luo Binghe actually asking him out on a date? One of these things his disciples often went on when they would sneak out of the sect to meet someone they liked? Shen Qingqiu was sure he must be dreaming, because in all the years he had been alive no one had ever asking him something like that; liked him enough to ever even think about something like that. It was a completely foreign concept for Shen Qingqiu and he barely knew how to react to something like that.
It left him so overwhelmed with embarrassment that he quickly pulled out his fan to entirely hide himself behind it that even his eyes barely peeked above it any more. He could barely handle the way his chest seemed to tighten and yet felt like it was going to burst. It was so overwhelming for him that his voice actually became unsteady when he finally managed to force some sort of words out. “When... when does Binghe want me to be here?”
While Luo Binghe had been rambling, going on about how Shen Qingqiu could simply ignore him if he had no interest and how he would completely understand, he now found himself almost choking on his words as his head finally snapped up again to look at the other. “Wait, really?” Luo Binghe looked at him as if he could hardly believe what he had just heard, “Does Master Shen mean that he will give me the honour and join me tomorrow?”
“Do I have to repeat myself or what?!” Shen Qingqiu's snapped out of embarrassment, glaring at the idiot from behind the fan that barely managed to hide his flustered face, “Just answer the question, before I reconsider!”
“Ah! Yes!” Luo Binghe quickly caught himself again, “How about Master Shen comes here the same time as always?”
“I guess this one can manage that.” Shen Qingqiu had to actively concentrate to keep his voice steady. Swallowing, he then once more hid further behind his fan, “Also... if we are... well, going out tomorrow, this one supposes it would be inappropriate if you were to call me by my title. So please just call me by my name or something.”
This made Luo Binghe look as happy and excited as never before. “Can I then call you A-Jiu?”
Only for Shen Qingqiu to give him a glare and a smack on the chest with his fan, “Do not get too ahead of yourself, you little beast.”
Yet this only made the newly dubbed little beast laugh in delight. “Then maybe at some later point in time.” He then looked at Shen Qingqiu with deep adoration, “So Qingqiu, until tomorrow then?”
“Yes.” Shen Qingqiu nodded in confirmation, “I will then see you tomorrow, Binghe.”
***
Tomorrow came faster than Shen Qingqiu could have ever expected. Not that he was nervous or anything, as after all he was an immortal master who regularly faced off against dangerous demons, so he was at tops a bit more jittery, and anyone who dared to say anything different would suffer the consequences. Thankfully his disciples did know better, so they all held their tongues, even if they gave him questioning glances during the morning lessons.
Only Ning Yingying came to him after class with her usual sweet disposition and asked her Shizun if anything was up and if he liked to share some tea. At which he did reassure her that he was fine. However he did admit that he needed her assistance for something. Which was how the both of them found themselves in his Bamboo House as the young woman helped him pick out a nice outfit for him to wear and for her to help him with his hair – something which usually he did for her. Where throughout it all Shen Qingqiu never actually explained to her why he needed her help with any of these things, nor did she ask him either in return. She simply wished him fun once he was ready thanks to her help and he left his house.
When Shen Qingqiu arrived at Luo Binghe's farm, the other was already waiting outside next to his ox cart, dressed in what must be his best robes. “Qingqiu, you came.” he smiled brightly when the cultivator landed in front of him.
“Well, this one did say he would.” Shen Qingqiu huffed as he got off his sword and put it away.
“You did.” Luo Binghe chuckled. “So, is Qingqiu ready then?” he then asked, turning towards his ox to give her a pet, “I thought that we could go on a little trip and have a picnic. My little Xiao Mei may not be as fast as Qingqiu's spiritual sword, but she offers a smooth ride.”
Reaching out as well to give the ox a pet on her muzzle, Shen Qingqiu nodded, “That sounds like a nice idea. Then let us go.”
Luo Binghe walked over towards the cart and held out his hand to Shen Qingqiu, to help him up onto the seat at the front. It was truly not needed as Shen Qingqiu easily would have gotten on himself without any issues, but it was a nice gesture that he gladly accepted. And when Luo Binghe then got on as well, sitting down next to Shen Qingqiu, he took to reigns into his hand to make his ox move forward and leave the farm together.
As they rode along the road by the river, going upstream and away from the direction of the busy city, Shen Qingqiu could not help but wonder what for a sight they must have made. A simple farmer in his Sunday's best and driving his ox cart, with an immortal in fine robes fit for a noble sitting next to him as if it was the most natural thing in the world. And Shen Qingqiu could not even begin to bring himself to care what anyone where to think, since all he cared about was that comfortable feeling of content in his chest as he and Luo Binghe were chatting and bantering.
Despite living in Cang Qiong Mountain for many years now, Shen Qingqiu had actually never been in this area. Which he now came to slightly regret as he let his eyes roam over the landscape around them, where on one side of them the river was flowing quietly, while on the other many trees grew as their canopy of leaves spread out all over them and swung gently in the cool wind.
Luo Binghe had actually not said where exactly he was even taking Shen Qingqiu to, keeping it as a surprise, while he kept their conversation flowing smoothly. And Shen Qingqiu could not find it in himself to be bothered about the unknown element and simply let himself enjoy the ride, feeling the gentle rhythm of the cart as it rode along the road that passed many rolling hills.
Eventually Luo Binghe then steered his cart off the main country road that they had been riding on for the last incense time, as he instead followed a much more smaller natural footpath until he eventually pulled to a stop.
“Here we are.” Luo Binghe announced as he hopped off the cart. “I like to come here often and wanted to show Qingqiu this place as well. And I thought it would be a nice spot for a picnic.”
Where Luo Binghe had ended up taking him was by a huge lake spring filled with wild lotus flowers, from which the local river flowed, where various lush vegetation grew all around. And as the centrepiece of it all stood a magnificent willow tree, large enough that not only could a full grown adult easily stand underneath the hanging leaves without touching them, but an entire smaller crowd of easily twenty people could find shade underneath the tree with still much room to spare.
In his many years as a cultivator, Shen Qingqiu had seen many otherworldly sights that took one's breath away with its indescribable beauty. Yet right now they seemed so blank next to this simplistic and natural beauty of this sight that Luo Binghe was offering to him. It was stunning and had a sense of homely calm to it, giving Shen Qingqiu a sense of belonging.
Luo Binghe quickly moved to unfasten the cart from his oxen, to allow her to graze. Before taking out a large blanket from the back of the cart, which he spread out underneath the large willow tree, and a few baskets that contained the food he had made.
Only once everything was in place did he then hold out his hand to Shen Qingqiu to help him down from the cart as well, like a noble soldier assisting a young maiden from a noble family. And he did not let go of his hand either and instead led him to the blanket like a true gentleman, only letting go once Shen Qingqiu had sat down comfortably.
Luo Binghe had truly outdone himself with the food he had made for the picnic, with a wide variety of dishes with ingredients from not only his own farm but also things he must have spend his money on and bought from the market. Shen Qingqiu could only imagine how long he must have spend in the kitchen to prepare everything, while also having to do his other daily chores on his farm.
“This one already knows that Binghe is an adequate cook, so there was no need trying to impress me.” Shen Qingqiu actually found himself mildly amused at the sight.
“Maybe so.” Luo Binghe mused as he poured them both some tea to enjoy during their picnic, “But this one still wishes to pamper Qingqiu, like he deserves.”
“Shameless little beast.” Shen Qingqiu huffed in return, even as he gracefully accepted the offered cup of tea.
As the pair enjoyed the picnic and shared the food Luo Binghe had made for them, they once more lost themselves in conversation. It somehow never stopped to amaze Shen Qingqiu how easily he found himself able to talk to Luo Binghe, despite his usual aversion to men. Same as when they decided to take a little walk along the river bed, where his hand was tucked into Luo Binghe's arm and both walked close to one another, it never bothered Shen Qingqiu to physically touch him and to be touched in return. It even did not bother him when Luo Binghe stopped for a moment to pluck a blossom from a blooming tree and gently fastened it into Shen Qingqiu's hair. Instead it made his heart jump in his chest and his skin prickle with warmth where Luo Binghe's fingers touched him.
When hours later the sun began to set above the horizon they had once more returned to the willow tree. Only this time they had sat down onto where the thick trunk split out into two large brances, giving them a beautiful view of the entire lake that reflected the brilliant hues of the setting sun that painted the sky in a symphony of colours.
It was truly a beautiful day from start to finish. Even when Luo Binghe had almost fallen into the lake when he had tried to pluck one of the lotus pods for them to share the seeds all without getting into the water, where Shen Qingqiu then had taken pity on the man and had walked onto the surface of the water to get it for him with amusement. Shen Qingqiu did not feel this light and happy ever in his life like he did right now with Luo Binghe.
But yet he still felt that ever present bitter taste in the back of his mouth he seemingly never could get rid of. That taste that always reminded him that things were not nice and where not simple and that he was simply being a fool to hope and to believe.
After all what would someone as sweet and kind as Luo Binghe want with a bitter and cold person like Shen Qingqiu?
“What is on your mind?” Luo Binghe's voice suddenly asked, making Shen Qingqiu jolt slightly after he had found himself lost in thought.
“Why does anything have to be on my mind?” Shen Qingqiu waved him off, “This one was simply enjoying the sunset.”
“So sunsets make you frown?” Luo Binghe raised an eyebrow at him. “Is something not to your liking, Qingqiu? Did I do something that upset you? Whatever it is, you can tell me.”
Usually it was an automatic response for Shen Qingqiu to repeat that nothing was wrong, to maybe even snap at the other to drop it and stop reading into things that meant nothing. Or to simply not deem the question worth the attention and to ignore the other until he dropped it. It was how Shen Qingqiu always handled things that bothered him, as it was easier than to admit his vulnerability.
Yet this time he only sighed and turned his body to look at the man besides him. “Tell me Binghe, why did you ask me to join you here today and why did you do all of these things? What is your motive?”
Being asked a question suddenly in return took Luo Binghe off guard, as his eyes widened. “My motive?”
“Yes, your motive.” Shen Qingqiu repeated. After all no one did anything without a motive and a gain for themselves. “Surely you must have one to do all of this and to be this kind to someone like me. Are you hoping for some kind of favour? An easy way for me to grand you immortality and cultivation? Or maybe you hope for a chance of wealth? Because if you are, then I would advise you to try these things with someone else than me, as the eventual misery it would bring you to put up with me is certainly not worth any potential gain you might have imagined that you could get.”
For a moment Luo Binghe was speechless at the words, at the accusations of the other. “Qingqiu...” he started, taking a good look at the man next to him, “do you really think that I only have asked you on a date today, because I was hoping to gain something from you?”
At the question Shen Qingqiu felt the urge to bite his lip and shake his head, because no. No, he did not really think that, because Luo Binghe was too kind for something like that. Which was why he would eventually become miserable, once he realised what scum Shen Qingqiu was.
Not getting any reply, not that he truly needed one, Luo Binghe then reached out and took Shen Qingqiu's hand into his own. “Well, Qingqiu is right in one thing. I indeed had a motive for all of this.” he admitted with a light voice, as he brought the hand he was holding with his much larger one to his lips, kissing it with a soft brush of his lips. “It is because I really, truly like you and have done from the moment that I had met you and am hoping so desperately to maybe, hopefully make Qingqiu like me back. Which is my motive.”
Shen Qingqiu wanted to rip his hand away and to yell at the other, to push him away and hide his soft underbelly. But he could not bring himself to do any of these things. So he hissed like a cat that had gotten backed into a corner, too weak to fight back, “Why would you even do that? I am cold and unlikeable.”
“Qingqiu is the kindest man I know.” another kiss to his fingers. “A gentleman who is protective of the people everyone else looks down upon and helps people without ever asking for anything for return or even letting anyone know. No other cultivator would ever treat courtesans like humans, let alone befriend them and treat them with as much dignity as one would an Emperor.”
Yet Shen Qingqiu could still not accept it. “I am not who you think I am. I am not even a noble like everyone believes, but nothing than a slave, lower than the lowest and less than a dog.”
“That simply makes Qingqiu much more amazing in every way, that he became such a powerful and esteemed master, when he had originated from such humble origins.” once more Luo Binghe kissed his hand, before he gave a shy giggle, “Also truth to be told I had already expected something like that when Qingqiu had told me that his name was the number 'nine'. One would have to be rather daft to think a noble son would be named something like that.”
But then Luo Binghe once more looked directly at Shen Qingqiu, finding his eyes to show his deepest and truest sincerity. “But no matter what Qingqiu says, I truly like you and nothing will change it. And I have liked you from the moment I had first seen you when you had walked out of the Warm Red Pavilion together with Madam Li and I had at first thought you were another worker. Learning that you are actually the Qing Jing Peak Lord has nothing to do with how I feel about you, as I already liked you before knowing it. Truth to be told, the only effect that information has had on me was making more too intimidated to talk to you, as I thought that surely someone as esteemed and elegant as you would never care about someone like me, a lowly farmer who could barely write his own name. But then I saw you at the market and you had offered to me to teach me to read and write, and you had come to my farm over and over, teaching me and simply being with me as we talked and spend time together, making me fall more and more for you until I finally managed to gather the courage to admit how I feel for you.” Luo Binghe moved closer, his free hand cupping Shen Qingqiu's face, “I love you. And it does not matter to me if you are Master Shen, Shen Qingqiu, Shen Jiu, or A-Jiu. I love the person that you are; the kind and hissy person who had reached out to me that day on the market.”
Shen Qingqiu's entire throat felt tight as if it had gotten clogged from the emotions that threatened to spill over, no matter how many times he swallowed in an attempt to free himself from his feelings and hide them like he always did. But he could not do it, but he could also not reply without risking to make a fool of himself. So he did the only thing left to him and leaned forward until their lips met in a soft kiss. And it was as if all of Shen Qingqiu's worried and self-doubts melted away under the feeling of Luo Binghe's lips against his own and the feeling of the hand that tenderly moved to the back of Shen Qingqiu's head to cup it and tenderly deepen the kiss. This moment was all that mattered, all that Shen Qingqiu truly wanted.

Shen Qingqiu's biweekly visits to Luo Binghe's farms had first turned into three times a week. Then to five times a week. And eventually it even was daily visits and at some point even nights. Until Shen Qingqiu spend more time at the farm than on Qing Jing Peak, to which he went every day to give his lessons in the mornings and to attend meetings, only to return to Luo Binghe's side once more by the end.
Which of course was something people began to notice, especially the Qing Jing Peak disciples. Not only was it impossible for them to miss that their Shizun barely spend any time at the Bamboo House any more unless it was to actively work inside of his office, but also the famously harsh Peak Lord's mood was much better as for late and he was less prone to loosing his temper. Much to the disciple's amazement, their Shizun even occasionally gave them small compliments if they did exceptionally well. Which of course left them incredibly curious about what had changed for their Shizun and where he was going ever day, showing even a newfound boldness towards their Shizun as they pestered him with questions.
At which he decided to be benevolent for a change and answer their questions. By taking all of his disciples along to the farm to have them help out with the big harvest. Shen Qingqiu felt such satisfaction at seeing these little pampered brats standing knee deep in muddy paddy fields to harvest rice. They had wanted answers for things that did not concern them, so they got answers to things that did not concern them.
Although it did bite him slightly when that little beast had dared to hug Shen Qingqiu from behind, calling him 'A-Jiu' with deep affection and even kissing him on his cheek, right in front of all the disciples. Ming Fan was in such shock at the sight that he ended up slipping and falling directly into the muddy water, while everyone else was too shocked to move and help him up. Ning Yingying was the only one who was not surprised in the slightest, due to having met Luo Binghe before, and was so kind to help her Shixiong up.
The harvest stretched out over multiple days, even with all the help from the Qing Jing Peak cultivators. Which the disciples all used to get to know the man who had won the heart of their Shizun and trying to deem if they considered him good enough for their Shizun. Where Ning Yingying was the first to deem him worthy, while a few of the other disciples took a bit longer to come to a conclusion, with Ming Fan being the one with the highest standards.
But when finally the last bit of harvest had been collected and stored away, Luo Binghe had invited everyone who had helped to a big feast. Which was when even the last sceptical disciple had been won over by Luo Binghe's worth. Even if it made Shen Qingqiu roll his eyes how easily they had been won over thanks to some good food.
However yet again Luo Binghe had managed to leave everyone aghast, when by the end of the harvest celebration he went down onto one knee in front of Shen Qingqiu, holding his hand in his own trembling ones, and asked him if he would do him the most incredible honour and marry him.
And when Shen Qingqiu agreed with a shaking voice, cheers and congratulations broke out all around them.

A few more months had passed and autumn had fully arrived, when Shen Qingqiu found himself underneath the grand willow tree together with Luo Binghe, both dressed in reds as they bowed to each other three times. Their friends from the Warm Red Pavilion, same as the disciples of Qing Jing Peak surrounded the pair to witness as they performed all the rites that would from henceforth bind them as husband and wife under the eyes of Heaven and Earth.
After a lifetime of hurt and broken promises, Shen Qingqiu had ended up losing all hope that he would ever find his happy end and he had accepted that he would end up alone and miserable.
But yet despite everything that had pointed against it he still found his happy ending, in the most unlikely place that he would have never imagined; the arms of a simple farmer called Luo Binghe, who had made Shen Qingqiu as happy as he had never been before in his life. All because he loved him for whom he was and allowed Shen Qingqiu to love him back. And when Shen Qingqiu entered the humble farmer's cottage, his new home, together with his husband, he thanked every single deity there was that he had been given the chance to meet his soulmate that day at the pavilion.
